Rectal prolapse is a frequent complication after pull-through operations for high imperforate anus. Mucosal prolapse causes soiling, occasional bleeding, and pain. Simple resection of the redundant mucosa is unsatisfactory and leads to frequent recurrences or strictures. In 1982, Millard and Rowe reported a technique designed to correct rectal prolapse using two perineal flaps, thus providing a skin-lined anal canal. We have operated on two patients using the same technique. A three-flap anoplasty was used in nine other patients. With an average follow-up of 13 months, none of out patients pre

Of 162 female patients with imperforate anus, 21% had a noncommunicating and 79% a communicating anomaly of the rectum or anus. Associated anatomical abnormalities were found in the lower urinary tract (15%), upper urinary tract (25%), lower genital tract (27%), upper genital tract (35%), and additional organ systems (51%). Death occurred in 26 patients and in 19, this was attributed to the associated abnormalities. Functional outcome was assessed in those patients 13 years of age or older. Bowel function was normal or near normal in 85%, as was urinary and renal function. In 44% of patients e

PURPOSE: To report our 14 years experience with the laparoscopic-assisted anorectal pull-through (LAARP) for the treatment of male neonates with high imperforate anus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all medical charts of patients who underwent LAARP from January 2001 to January 2015 collecting information regarding demographic data, associated anomalies, type of fistula, pelvic floor muscles tropism, surgery (operative time, conversion to open technique, and complications), and follow-up. Follow-up data were obtained through the use of validated questionnaires that aim to assess the intes

We present a case of a neonate with VACTERL-like association, with the VACTERL association defined as the non-random association of vertebral, anal, cardiac, esophageal, renal/kidney, and limb defects, as manifested by a hemivertebra, imperforate anus, and digit anomalies, in rare association with duodenal atresia and right-sided diaphragmatic hernia. This constellation is previously undescribed and may offer insight into the pathogenesis of VACTERL and associated birth defects.

We describe a 2-month-old boy with penoscrotal inversion, hypospadias, imperforate anus, facial anomalies, developmental retardation, and a subtelomeric deletion of chromosome 13q. His phenotype with anogenital malformations and characteristic facies closely resembled two unrelated patients with minute deletions of chromosome 13q who we reported earlier. In addition, he had unilateral renal agenesis. We propose that these patients represent a clinically recognizable, novel chromosomal microdeletion syndrome. The findings indicate the presence of a major gene(s) on chromosome 13q33.2qter that r

The present series concerns the method of treatment for anus imperforatus as it was performed at the Academic Hospital Ghent (Belgium) between 1971 and 1980. Two different technics are confronted one with the other: the anterior perineal approach according to Mollard and the posterior transsacral approach according to Stephens. In agreement with the recent literature the anterior way of acceding to the puborectalissling has undeniable advantage. Even with a very short follow-up period the number of children with supralevatoric localization of anus imperforatus treated by the technic of Mollard

Herein, we report an exceptionally rare case of a 25-year-old woman with cloacal exstrophy/omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) syndrome achieving a viable pregnancy despite many gastrointestinal and genitourinary malformations and multiple respective corrective operations. The patient was born with two vaginas, two uteruses, four ovaries, an imperforate anus, a large omphalocele including bowel and bladder exstrophy, and diaphysis of the pubic rami. This patient is the only documented OEIS patient not to have tethered spinal cord as an anomaly, perhaps contributing to

OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic accuracy for the low-type imperforate anus between prone cross-table radiography and sonography.
METHODS: We included 20 neonates with imperforate anus: 13 with a surgically proven low type and 7 with an intermediate or high type. The distance between the distal rectal pouch and the perineum (pouch-perineum distance) was measured by both sonography and prone cross-table radiography. A previously established pouch-perineum distance of 10 mm was used as the cutoff for diagnosis of a low-type imperforate anus. The fistula location was also determined with so

PURPOSE: Infected enlarged prostatic utricles and infected remnant fistula tracts of high imperforate anus are usually managed by a suprapubic, transtrigonal or posterior sagittal approach. We describe a minimally invasive endoscopic approach to these entities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated 12 patients with infected enlarged prostatic utricles and 4 with infected remnant fistula tracts using endoscopic techniques. Specifically a resectoscope with a bulb electrode or a cystoscope with a Bugby electrode was used to fulgurate circumferentially the dilated utricle or remnant fistula. After fu

We describe a unique case with various congenital malformations. The most significant were: An abnormal solitary kidney with a single vaginal ectopic ureter, chronic renal tubular acidosis, imperforate anus, agenesis of the uterus and gallbladder and sacral and vertebral deformities.

Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is a rare congenital anomaly featuring severe genitourinary and gastrointestinal malformations. We report a neonate with complete URSMS, characterized by complete penoscrotal transposition, a hypoplastic phallus without urethral opening, and an imperforate anus. Laboratory evaluation revealed an elevated serum creatinine of 2.47 mg/dL. Intraoperatively, the rectum and urethra formed a common channel at the phallic base. Anoplasty and urethrostomy were performed. Postoperatively, the infant was anuric and ultrasound confirmed bilateral multicystic

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence and morbidity caused by urologic anomalies in patients with low imperforate anus.
METHODS: The case records and imaging studies of 95 patients who underwent surgery for low imperforate anus over a 15-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Follow-up ranged from 2 to 18 years (mean 5.4).
RESULTS: Genitourinary abnormalities were seen in 29 patients (31%), whereas 10 (11%) had lumbosacral abnormalities. A micturating cystourethrogram was performed in 48 patients, 18 of whom were shown to have vesicoureteric reflux and 2 of whom required surgical correc

Omphalocele, exstrophy of the bladder, imperforate anus and spinal defect (OEIS) complex is a rare congenital multisystemic malformation representing unique anomalies. It was first reported in 1978 through a series of cases with an abnormality of body wall development. We are reporting a case of an infant of 36 weeks gestation, with a family history of consanguinity and oral contraceptive pill intake that was discontinued when the mother was 1-month pregnant. The neonatal examination revealed findings that were consistent with OEIS complex along with the presence of genital anomalies. The infa

Gastrointestinal (GI) duplications contain tissue resembling several portions of the GI tract and are associated with vertebral and genitourinary (GU) abnormalities [1-4]. We report a newborn with low, imperforate anus and lumbosacral dysraphism, who presented with a large cystic mass in the left renal fossa and pelvis. The flank mass (felt initially to be a dysplastic kidney and ureter) proved to be a complex GI duplication with histologic evidence of gastric, small bowel, and colonic mucosa, as well as respiratory epithelium and pancreatic tissue.

PURPOSE: Posterior sagittal approach was used for the repair of 11 cases of rectourethral fistula between 1992 and 1998.
METHODS: All these patients had rectourethral fistula as a result of perineal procedure performed for imperforate anus at the time of birth. In addition to the fistula repair, an associated anorectal stenosis (3 cases) and urethral stricture 11 case) also were corrected with this approach. All the patients underwent surgery under cover of a protective colostomy.
RESULTS: Successful repair was achieved in all patients, and the follow-up period ranged from 10 months to 7 yea
