The authors present the results of a new method for surgical treatment of aphakic eye glaucoma with the use of low-frequency ultrasound. The suggested surgery, ultrasonic cyclodialysis, was carried out in 15 patients with glaucoma on the aphakic eyes. A follow-up of 6 months has demonstrated a stable normalization of intraocular pressure. The mechanism of the hypotensive effect of the operation is explained largely by improvement of fluid discharge and a certain inhibition of the chamber humor production. A study of peculiarities of secondary cataract formation in implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses in experiment on 60 rabbit eyes has shown that, besides the known factors of secondary cataract formation, a great role belongs to inflammatory reaction of all segments of the uveal tract leading to appearance of a transudate in the anterior chamber of the eye as well as to development of adhesions of the iris and ciliary body processes with the lens capsule, along which stromal elements of these segments of the uveal tract actively migrate.

Color vision examinations were performed using a clinical test battery and two spectral laboratory methods. With aphakia and iris-clip lenses (ICL) there were slight acquired blue-yellow defects six months to three years after surgery, especially when the more sensitive laboratory methods were used. In the nationwide study of epikeratophakia, 97 surgeons performed a total of 335 procedures in 314 eyes for the correction of aphakia in children under the age of 8 years 1 month. Fifteen children underwent bilateral surgery. Thirty-six tissue lenses were removed and 21 of these eyes underwent a second epikeratophakia procedure. The magnification of the fundus image with various forms of funduscopy in ametropia and aphakia is poorly understood. This paper investigates these relationships. Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and biomicroscopic funduscopy is included. The surgical management of glaucoma in aphakia has been limited by poor success in the control of intraocular pressure and serious postoperative complications that threaten vision. A consecutive series of trabeculectomy filtering procedures in aphakic eyes with a mean preoperative intraocular pressure of 38 mmHg was followed for an average of 26 months and revealed a 62% control of intraocular pressure at 21 mmHg or less. There is a wide variety of aphakic lenses available but remarkably little quantitative data to assist the optometrist in his choice of product. This paper presents the results of a survey of nearly all the available lens types. Quantitative data is given for the products of those manufacturers who cooperated. Data covers off axis acuity, magnification, distortion, thickness, weight and ultraviolet protection.

In a clinic where 250 children have been fitted with contact lenses between 1976 and 1982, one hundred and five were bilateral infantile aphakic patients. A review of the data sheets of 43 bilateral infantile aphakic patients in this group implies that the corneal complications of treatment are substantial but surmountable and that the risks and difficulties of contact lens treatment are probably justifiable if the recent reports of improved visual function in these patients are substantiated.
