A peripheral membrane protease was purified from mitochondria of rat submaxillary gland. On non-denaturing PAGE the purified enzyme showed a single protein band with the enzyme activity. Snake venoms are rich sources of serine proteinase inhibitors that are members of the KunitzBPTI (bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor) family. In 146 guinea pigs with body weight of 150-200 g pemphigus vulgaris (PV) was induced using screening techniques. The animals were injected with PV patients' IgG (IgGPV) and blister fluid (PVBF) with the PV patient mononuclears. CELA3A and CELA3B are the primary elastases secreted by the human pancreas that are digestive enzymes and are markers for pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. CELA1, another family member, is not expressed in the human pancreas but has been detected in the mouse lung and human keratinocytes. A tissue kallikrein was purified over 1500-fold from the postmicrosomal supernatant of human submaxillary glands. The purified enzyme gave a single band, corresponding to an apparent molecular weight of 42,000 on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A multicenter randomized double-blind trial on the use of synthetic salmon calcitonin (SCT) was carried out in 94 patients with acute pancreatitis.
