Aspergillus infections may be categorized by specific radiographic patterns, the patient's immunologic status, and the presence or absence of preexisting structural lung disease. General patterns include invasive aspergillosis (both vascular and airway invasive varieties and acute tracheobronchitis), semiinvasive aspergillosis (including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis), mycetoma, allergic aspergillosis, and obstructing bronchial aspergillosis. Knowledge of these various radiographic patterns as well as the immune derangements that accompany these infec…

Invasive aspergillosis is a common infection in patients who are immunocompromised, particularly in oncology patients, patients receiving other immunosuppressive therapy, bone marrow transplant patients, and HIV-infected patients. The diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis is difficult in the absence of tissue biopsy and histologic confirmation. Therefore, the need for and progress in recent advances in the development of highly sensitive and specific serodiagnostic tests for the early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis have been reviewed. Anti-Aspergillus antibody detection lacks the utility to…

This study was conducted to determine the frequency of sensitization to Aspergillus antigens in 27 patients with perennial rhinitis. Immediate cutaneous reactivity was observed in 7 (26%) patients. In 3 of these 7 patients, hypersensitivity was restricted to Aspergillus antigens alone. One patient had an isolated late cutaneous reaction. Hypersensitivity was observed most commonly with A. flavus. Serum precipitins to A. flavus were detected in one patient. It is possible that sensitization to Aspergillus antigens may play an important role in the causation of perennial rhinitis and could also …

The first case of mycetoma caused by Aspergillus nidulans has been described from India in a young farmer of Jaisalmer situated in the Thar desert of Western Rajasthan, India. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological and mycological studies.

This review provides an in-depth exploration of antifungal resistance in non-fumigatus Aspergillus species, mainly focusing on acquired resistance. The available data have been compiled and sometimes re-analysed. It highlights the increasing prevalence of resistance in non-fumigatus species belonging to Flavi, Terrei, Nigri, and Nidulantes Aspergillus sections, offering a detailed analysis of resistance detection methods and the global distribution of resistant strains. The review also thoroughly examines the molecular mechanisms behind resistance and raises key unresolved issues, such as the …

Aspergillus fumigatus is a saprophytic fungus prevalent in the environment and capable of causing severe invasive infection in humans. This organism can use strategies such as molecule masking, immune response manipulation and gene expression alteration to evade host defences. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing effective diagnostics and therapies to improve patient outcomes in Aspergillus-related diseases. In this Review, we explore the biology and pathogenesis of A. fumigatus in the context of host biology and disease, highlighting virus-associated pulmonary aspergillo…

We comment here on the article by Stefanolo et al entitled "Effect of Aspergillus niger prolyl endopeptidase in patients with celiac disease on a long-term gluten-free diet", published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology. Celiac disease is a well-recognized systemic autoimmune disorder. In genetically susceptible people, the most evident damage is located in the small intestine, and is caused and worsened by the ingestion of gluten. For that reason, celiac patients adopt a gluten-free diet (GFD), but it has some limitations, and it does not prevent re-exposure to gluten. Research aims to …

The annotated genome of Aspergillus tanneri, a recently discovered drug-resistant pathogen, was determined by employing the Oxford Nanopore MinION platform and the Funannotate pipeline. The genome size and the number of protein-coding genes are notably larger than those of the most common etiological agent of aspergillosis, Aspergillus fumigatus.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous opportunistic fungal pathogen capable of causing invasive aspergillosis, a globally distributed disease with a mortality rate of up to 90% in high-risk populations. Effective control and prevention of this disease require a thorough understanding of its epidemiology. However, despite significant efforts, the global molecular epidemiology of A. fumigatus remains poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed 2,026 A. fumigatus isolates from 13 countries in four continents using nine highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. Genetic cluster analyses suggest …

INTRODUCTION: Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous saprophytic fungus capable of producing small airborne spores, which are frequently inhaled by humans. In healthy individuals, the fungus is rapidly cleared by innate mechanisms, including immune cells. However, in individuals with impaired lung function or immunosuppression the spores can germinate and prompt severe allergic responses, and disease with limited or extensive invasiveness.
AREAS COVERED: The traits that make A. fumigatus a successful colonizer and pathogen of humans are multi-factorial. Thus, a global investigative approach is…
