A case of generalized auditory agnosia with unilateral subcortical brain lesion.

The mechanisms and functional anatomy underlying the early stages of speech perception are still not well understood. Auditory agnosia is a deficit of auditory object processing defined as a disability to recognize spoken languages and/or nonverbal environmental sounds and music despite adequate hearing while spontaneous speech, reading and writing are preserved. Usually, either the bilateral or unilateral temporal lobe, especially the transverse gyral lesions, are responsible for auditory agnosia. Subcortical lesions without cortical damage rarely causes auditory agnosia. We present a 73-year

Hearing thresholds at high frequency in patients with cystic fibrosis: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: High-frequency audiometry may contribute to the early detection of hearing loss caused by ototoxic medications. Many ototoxic drugs are widely used in the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis. Early detection of hearing loss should allow known harmful drugs to be identified before the damage affects speech frequencies. The damage caused by ototoxicity is irreversible, resulting in important social and psychological consequences. In children, hearing loss, even when restricted to high frequencies, can affect the development of language. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficac

Dual Sensory Impairment: The Correlation between Age Related Macular Degeneration and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

UNLABELLED: The pathogeneses of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and age-related hearing impairment are not yet fully understood. If AMD and age-related hearing impairment are correlated, the cause of both may be a result of a common vulnerability. The aim of this study was to assess the interrelation between age-related macular degeneration and age-related hearing loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our case-control analysis, the hearing conditions of 40 subjects with AMD were compared with 40 age-matched healthy controls. In all patients, retinal changes were certified by clinical examinat

A mutation in Wolfram syndrome type 1 gene in a Japanese family with autosomal dominant low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss.

CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that Wolfram syndrome type 1 gene (WFS1) mutation is an important cause of autosomal dominant low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (LFSNHL) in Japan. OBJECTIVE: DFNA6/14 is caused by a heterozygous mutation of WFS1 and is a common cause of autosomal dominant LFSNHL among populations in both Europe and the US. The purpose of this study was to investigate WFS1 mutations among Japanese patients whose phenotypes were consistent with those of DFNA6/14. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using audiometry and genetic analysis, we searched for WFS1 mutations in three unrelate

Speech cortical activation and connectivity in typically developing children and those with listening difficulties.

Listening difficulties (LiD) in people who have normal audiometry are a widespread but poorly understood form of hearing impairment. Recent research suggests that childhood LiD are cognitive rather than auditory in origin. We examined decoding of sentences using a novel combination of behavioral testing and fMRI with 43 typically developing children and 42 age matched (6-13 years old) children with LiD, categorized by caregiver report (ECLiPS). Both groups had clinically normal hearing. For sentence listening tasks, we found no group differences in fMRI brain cortical activation by increasingl

ABG, dips and notches evaluation of cochlear reserve in otosclerosis.

This study of a possible relationship between the ABG and the remodeling of the niche in otosclerosis in a significant number of patients operated on by stapedectomy allows the authors to define six types of ABG shape, corresponding to various types of stapedial fixation and remodeling of the niche. But the difficulties in finding the real bone conduction threshold levels, which ABG shapes depend on, lead us first to explain the mechanism of the various dips and notches altering bone conduction curves; and second, to try to find a safe and sure method for precise evaluation of the real cochlea

Electrophysiological exploration of hearing.

Electrophysiologic hearing tests have been developed since the 1960s to determine hearing thresholds objectively. They are now implemented in newborn hearing screening. While they determine thresholds, interpretation requires subjective pure-tone and speech audiometry to determine the type of hearing loss. Each examination tests a different anatomic region, enabling the auditory system to be explored from the organ of Corti to the auditory cortex. Thus, the various objective audiometric examinations are complementary.

Effects of Noise Exposure on Peripheral Auditory Function, Binaural Envelope Coding, and Speech Perception in Student Musicians With Normal Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: Musicians face an increased risk of hearing loss due to prolonged and repetitive exposure to high-noise levels. Detecting early signs of hearing loss, which are subtle and often elusive to traditional clinical tests like pure-tone audiometry, is essential. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of noise exposure on the electrophysiological and perceptual aspects of subclinical hearing damage in young musicians with normal audiometric thresholds. DESIGN: The study included 33 musicians and 33 nonmusicians, all aged between 21 and 35 years, with normal audiometric

Brainstem auditory physiology in children with listening difficulties.

Children who have listening difficulties (LiD) despite having normal audiometry are often diagnosed as having an auditory processing disorder. A lack of evidence regarding involvement of specific auditory mechanisms has limited development of effective treatments for these children. Here, we examined electrophysiologic evidence for brainstem pathway mechanisms in children with and without defined LiD. We undertook a prospective controlled study of 132 children aged 6-14 years with normal pure tone audiometry, grouped into LiD (n = 63) or Typically Developing (TD; n = 69) based on scores on the

Transducer Variability in Speech-in-Noise Testing: Considerations Related to Stimulus Bandwidth.

PURPOSE: Clinical audiologists typically assume that headphones and insert phones will produce comparable results when they are used to conduct speech-in-noise or other audiological tests; however, this may not always be the case. Here, we show that there are significant differences in the scores that previous studies have reported for headphone and insert-phone transducers on the Words-in-Noise (WIN) Test, and discuss the possibility that the variations in high-frequency output that are allowable under the speech source specifications of American National Standards Institute S3.6 might be con
