Abnormality in the self-monitoring mechanism in patients with fibromyalgia and somatoform pain disorder.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations and passivity experiences are associated with an abnormality in the self-monitoring mechanism that normally allows us to distinguish self-produced from externally produced sensations. It is unclear if chronic central pain disorders such as fibromyalgia and somatoform pain disorders also involve a defect of the self-monitoring mechanism. METHODS: Responses to tactile stimulation were assessed in four groups of subjects (N = 40): patients with fibromyalgia, patients with somatoform pain disorder, patients with schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations and/or

Receptive amusia: evidence for cross-hemispheric neural networks underlying music processing strategies.

Perceptual musical functions were investigated in patients suffering from unilateral cerebrovascular cortical lesions. Using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technique, a standardized short test battery was established that covers local (analytical) as well as global perceptual mechanisms. These represent the principal cognitive strategies in melodic and temporal musical information processing (local, interval and rhythm; global, contour and metre). Of the participating brain-damaged patients, a total of 69% presented with post-lesional impairments in music perception. Left-hemisphe

Speech-in-noise perception deficit in adults with dyslexia: effects of background type and listening configuration.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with impaired speech-in-noise perception. The goal of the present research was to further characterize this deficit in dyslexic adults. In order to specify the mechanisms and processing strategies used by adults with dyslexia during speech-in-noise perception, we explored the influence of background type, presenting single target-words against backgrounds made of cocktail party sounds, modulated speech-derived noise or stationary noise. We also evaluated the effect of three listening configurations differing in terms of the amount of spatial processing requ

Preserved use of spatial cues for sound segregation in a case of spatial deafness.

Auditory spatial cues contribute to sound localisation and to sound object segregation. We have investigated these capacities in a patient (NM) who complained having difficulties to localise sounds in everyday life after a right temporo-parieto-frontal ischemic lesion. Two groups of tasks were used, in which spatial dimension was simulated by interaural time differences (ITD): (i) active localisation of stationary or moving sound targets, and (ii) sound segregation on the basis of spatial cues. This latter included a spatial release from masking paradigm and two ITD diotic tasks. NM failed to

Neural mechanisms of fear memory precision and generalization: from auditory cortex to amygdala.

Identifying neural networks that infer safety versus danger is of great interest across multiple disciplines. Recent research has started to elucidate the brain networks mediating fear discrimination and generalization. Here, we focus on the contribution of the auditory cortices to auditory fear memory and discrimination processes. We first review studies showing that the primary auditory cortex (Te1) is involved in fear memory for tones with complex perceptual features only. Conversely, Te1 is essential for fear discrimination across all types of acoustic stimuli. These studies support the id

Auditory and short-term memory abilities in right- and left-hemiparetic children with cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the auditory abilities and auditory short-term memory of right- and left-hemiplegic children with cerebral palsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 26 children aged 8 to 10 years, all native Turkish speakers, divided into three groups: 8 right-hemiparetic, 8 left-hemiparetic, and 10 typically developing children. Hearing thresholds were evaluated before the children were included in the study. The children were assessed with the Test for Auditory Processing Disorders in children (SCAN-C) and the Auditory Digit Span Test. RESULTS: For the SCAN Tes

Musical learning in children and adults with Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is recent interest in using music making as an empirically supported intervention for various neurodevelopmental disorders due to music's engagement of perceptual-motor mapping processes. However, little is known about music learning in populations with developmental disabilities. Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder whose characteristic auditory strengths and visual-spatial weaknesses map onto the processes used to learn to play a musical instrument. METHODS: We identified correlates of novel musical instrument learning in WS by teaching 46 childr

Prevalence of hallucinations and their pathological associations in the general population.

Hallucinations are perceptual phenomena involved in many fields of pathology. Although clinically widely explored, studies in the general population of these phenomena are scant. This issue was investigated using representative samples of the non-institutionalized general population of the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy aged 15 years or over (N=13,057). These surveys were conducted by telephone and explored mental disorders and hallucinations (visual, auditory, olfactory, haptic and gustatory hallucinations, out-of-body experiences, hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations). Overall, 38.7%

Auditory event-related potentials and function of the medial olivocochlear efferent system in children with auditory processing disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to investigate the function of central auditory pathways and of the medial efferent olivocochlear system (MOCS). DESIGN: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded following the delivery of the stimulus /da/ in quiet and in ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise conditions and correlated to the results of the auditory processing disorders (APD) diagnostic test battery. MOCS function was investigated by adding ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise to transient evoked otoacoustic emission recordings. Auditory brainstem responses and pure tone au

Impaired downregulation of visual cortex during auditory processing is associated with autism symptomatology in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are pervasive developmental disorders characterized by impairments in language development and social interaction, along with restricted and stereotyped behaviors. These behaviors often include atypical responses to sensory stimuli; some children with ASD are easily overwhelmed by sensory stimuli, while others may seem unaware of their environment. Vision and audition are two sensory modalities important for social interactions and language, and are differentially affected in ASD. In the present study, 16 children and adolescents with ASD and 16 typically develo

Delayed detection of tonal targets in background noise in dyslexia.

Individuals with developmental dyslexia are often impaired in their ability to process certain linguistic and even basic non-linguistic auditory signals. Recent investigations report conflicting findings regarding impaired low-level binaural detection mechanisms associated with dyslexia. Binaural impairment has been hypothesized to stem from a general low-level processing disorder for temporally fine sensory stimuli. Here we use a new behavioral paradigm to address this issue. We compared the response times of dyslexic listeners and their matched controls in a tone-in-noise detection task. The

Infectious causes of Alice in Wonderland syndrome.

Alice-in-Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a perceptual disorder embracing a spectrum of self-experienced paroxysmal body image illusions including most commonly distortions of shape (metamorphopsia), size (macropsia or micropsia), distance (pelopsia or teleopsia), movement, and color among other visual and somesthetic distortions. Depersonalization, derealization, and auditory hallucinations have also been described. Recent reports suggest that infectious diseases are the predominant etiology for AIWS, especially among children. This article reviews current understanding regarding the association

Music processing deficits in Landau-Kleffner syndrome: Four case studies in adulthood.

Verbal-auditory agnosia and aphasia are the most prominent symptoms in Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), a childhood epilepsy that can have sustained long-term effects on language processing. The present study provides the first objective investigation of music perception skills in four adult patients with a diagnosis of LKS during childhood, covering the spectrum of severity of the syndrome from mild to severe. Pitch discrimination, short-term memory for melodic, rhythmic and verbal information, as well as emotion recognition in music and speech prosody were assessed with listening tests, and s

Palinacousis leading to the diagnosis of temporal lobe seizures in a patient with schizophrenia.

Palinacousis is a rarely reported symptom of temporal lobe dysfunction. Especially in psychiatric patients it may be misdiagnosed if it is not differentiated from the auditory hallucinations of psychotic illness. We report the case of a 20-year-old patient with the previously established diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia who presented with the symptom of palinacousis. She was not psychotic at that time, her only complaints being recurrent auditory sensations. Repeated EEG recordings showed a left temporal theta focus with spikes. The diagnosis of temporal lobe seizures was made. Treatment wi

Outcome of laryngeal and velopharyngeal biofeedback treatment in children and young adults: a pilot study.

A relatively new management strategy for the treatment of voice disorders is the use of laryngeal (LB) and velopharyngeal biofeedback (VB). The main purpose of the present pilot study is to document the outcome of vocal and velopharyngeal performances after a well-defined LB and VB treatment. Four subjects were studied pretreatment (1 week before LB or VB treatment) and posttreatment (1 week after the LB or VB treatment). To measure and compare the effect of LB and VB, objective and subjective assessment techniques were used. Perceptual voice assessment included a perceptual rating of the voic

Altered neural processing in middle frontal gyrus and cerebellum during temporal recalibration of action-outcome predictions in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

A key function of the perceptual system is to predict the (multi)sensory outcomes of actions and recalibrate these predictions in response to changing conditions. In schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), impairments in this ability have been linked to difficulties in self-other distinction. This study investigated the neural correlates of the recalibration of action-outcome predictions to delays, the transfer of this process across sensory modalities, and whether participants with SSD exhibit alterations in the underlying neural processes. SSD participants and healthy controls (HC) underwent
