A panel of six biotinylated lectins was applied in order to study the composition and distribution of plasma membrane carbohydrate residues in 83 primary cutaneous melanomas (MMs) and in 85 melanocytic nevi (MN) with the avidin-biotin peroxidase technique. No clear-cut differences between MN and MMs were observed with regard to the staining with lectins. Forty-five people who had attended a wedding banquet were examined by means of both Avidin-Biotin Peroxidase Complex-ELISA (ABC-ELISA) and Kato stool thick smear technic. The results revealed that the positive rates with ABC-ELISA were 15.56% (7/45) and Kato Katz 0.62% (1/161). There was a significant difference between the two positive rates (p < 0.005). In this study we compared the sensitivity of SRCA for detecting A, B, O(H) blood group antigens on the urothelial surface of normal renal pelvis, ureter, and bladder to that of immunoperoxidase staining via the avidin-biotin complex (ABC) method. Mast cells are demonstrated in synovial membranes of patients with osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis using a new staining principle based on interaction of heparin in mast cell granules with peroxidase labeled avidin. Autoimmunity is considered the most likely cause of human narcolepsy-cataplexy, but no specific autoantibodies or antigen(s) have yet been identified. Because expressed at a significant level at the membrane of human T cells, we made the hypothesis that the cellular prion protein (PrPc) could behave as a receptor, and be responsible for signal transduction.
