BACKGROUND: Human babesiosis is a rare tick-borne infectious disease. The clinical presentation ranges from an asymptomatic form to a life threatening infection with severe hemolysis. Human babesiosis due to Babesia microti is the most common and is endemic in North America.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a European patient with severe pancytopenia and reactive hemophagocytosis related to a Babesia microti infection. Babesia infection was acquired during a travel in the USA.
CONCLUSION: Babesiosis should be considered in patients who traveled in endemic areas, especially North America for the …

Babesiosis in humans is caused by infection with various species of Babesia (Apicomplexa, Piroplasmida), mainly transmitted by an arthropod vector--Ixodes spp. ticks. This review will focus on blood transfusion as another mode of Babesia transmission, especially in endemic areas, as well as the impact of human babesiosis on transfusion medicine.

BACKGROUND: Babesia microti, the primary cause of human babesiosis in the United States, is an intraerythrocytic parasite endemic to the Northeast and upper Midwest. Published studies indicate that B. microti increasingly poses a blood safety risk. The American Red Cross Hemovigilance Program herein describes the donor and recipient characteristics of suspected transfusion-transmitted B. microti cases reported between 2005 and 2007.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Suspected transfusion-transmitted Babesia infections were reported by transfusion services or were discovered through recipient-tracing …

The emergence of Lyme borreliosis as the most prevalent arthropod disease of humans in the temperate northern hemisphere has resulted in renewed interest in human babesiosis, transmitted by the same tick vectors. The advent of new molecular tools has made possible a reappraisal of the main parasites involved (Babesia divergens in Europe and Babesia microti in the USA). B. divergens is probably restricted to European cattle, though there are several nearly identical species. B. microti occurs as a world-wide species complex rather than as a single species, and although both phenotypic and genot…

The efficacy of a new inactivated vaccine against Babesia divergens was evaluated by means of inoculation tests. The infection was initiated by i.v. injection of blood containing 2 x 10(9) living parasites into splenectomized and non-splenectomized calves. Clinical status and hematological parameters were determined. Serology examinations for antibodies against B. divergens were carried out by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Non-vaccinated and splenectomized animals exhibited experimental infections. In vaccinated and splenectomized animals, clinical symptoms and prolonged incubatio…

This paper describes the clinico-pathological parameters measured in dogs that were vaccinated against Babesia canis using soluble parasite antigens (SPA) and then challenged. The packed cell volume (PCV) and the plasma creatinine value decreased immediately after challenge. Actual PCV values could be predicted in the first 5-6 days of the infection, assuming that creatinine values were modulated by increase of plasma volume. This association no longer existed after that time, and observations indicated splenic involvement in reduction of numbers of circulating erythrocytes. The anaemia due to…

We have already reported that anti-erythrocyte antibody induced by Babesia gibsoni infection (aEAb) showed higher reactivity against aged and/or oxidized erythrocytes than intact one in vitro (Morita et al., 1995). To clarify the meaning of such a binding character of aEAb in vivo, changes in erythrocyte oxidation were observed in artificially infected dogs. The ratio of methemoglobin concentration against total hemoglobin concentration (metHb%) as the indicator of erythrocyte oxidation was increased by the artificial infection in the intact dogs, suggesting that aEAb played a more important r…

Two cases of Babesia bovis, a parasite associated with the tick Boophilus microplus, are reported for the first time from the central part of Zambia. It is concluded that infected B. microplus ticks are occasionally introduced into central Zambia by tick-infested cattle from the north-eastern part of the country where B. bovis is endemic. The spread of B. microplus in Southern Africa in a westward direction is discussed and related to the epidemiology of bovine babesiosis in Zambia.

Nine 4-year-old Arabian geldings were experimentally infected with Babesia equi of European origin. All horses developed detectable parasitemia an average of 30 days after they were inoculated, which was accompanied by a decrease in PCV. The infections were generally mild with no animal deaths. All horses became serologically positive by the indirect fluorescent antibody test within an average of 23 days after they were inoculated and by the complement-fixation test 30 days after they were inoculated.

One intact and two splenectomized Holstein calves were infected intravenously with a Mexican strain of Babesia bovis and killed following the onset of severe clinical disease. A light and electron microscopic study was conducted on selected tissues to examine the relationship between parasitized erythrocytes and microvascular endothelial cells. The pattern and degree of specific organ sequestration of parasitized erythrocytes was assessed and correlated to lesions. Red blood cells infected with Babesia bovis exhibited stellate membrane protrusions. This morphological change appeared to mediate…

A number of observations were carried out on the effect of the newly isolated parasite, Babesia motasi (Wales) on intact and splenectomised sheep and on a splenectomised goat. The parasite was not pathogenic for intact animals but caused fever and anaemia in splenectomised ones. B motasi (Wales) was also studied morphologically, morphometrically and serologically. The common form of the parasite was seen to be a double pyriform, the mean length of one side being 2.23 micrometer. It appeared to be morphometrically and serologically close to the other north European B motasi strains but distinct…

A study was conducted in 2008 to determine the prevalence of Anaplasma and Babesia infections in cattle in the Puntarenas Province of Costa Rica. Blood samples were taken from a total of 449 cattle during the month of March at 30 farms in the region of Espiritu Santu, Costa Rica. Commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were used to determine presence of antibodies to Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale, and real-time PCR was used to determine the presence of DNA from the disease-causing organisms. The ELISA results indicated that 87.5% of the cattle sampled were …

In the present study, we screened 502 natural product compounds against the in vitro growth of Babesia (B.) bovis. Then, the novel and potent identified compounds were further evaluated for their in vitro efficacies using viability and cytotoxicity assays. The in vivo inhibitory effects of the selected compounds were evaluated using B. microti "rodent strain" in mice model. Three potent compounds, namely, Rottlerin (RL), Narasin (NR), Lasalocid acid (LA), exhibited the lowest IC50 (half-maximal inhibitory concentration) as follows: 5.45 ± 1.20 μM for RL, 1.86 ± 0.66 μM for NR, and 3.56 ± 1.41 …

BACKGROUND: Babesia, a tick-borne genus of intraerythrocytic parasites, is understudied in humans outside of established high-endemic areas. There is a paucity of data on Babesia in Africa, despite evidence that it is regionally present. A pilot study suggested that Babesia was present in a rural district of Tanzania.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional study was conducted July-August 2017: residents in a case hamlet that had clustering of subjects with high signal-to-cut off (S/CO) ratios for antibodies against B. microti in the pilot study, and a control hamlet that had lacked…

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies against B. bovis and B. bigemina in calves from the region of Araguaína, State of Tocantins, Brazil. In this research we used sera obtained from 506 calves, from both genders and of 8 to 24 months old, to detect antibodies by indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA-test). Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Chi-square (χ²) test with Yates correction. The seroprevalence obtained was 90.5 and 91.7% for B. bigemina and B. bovis, respectively, characterizing the region as an area of enzootic stab

The suitability of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as hosts for the cattle ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus, has been well documented. These ticks have a wide host range, and both transmit Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina, the agents responsible for bovine babesiosis. Although this disease and its vectors have been eradicated from the United States and some states in northern Mexico, it still is a problem in other Mexican states. It is not known if wild cervids like white-tailed deer can act as reservoirs for bovine babesiosis. The …
