The initial steps of Salmonella pathogenesis involve adhesion to and invasion into host epithelial cells. While well-studied for Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, the factors contributing to this process in other, host-adapted serovars remains unexplored. Here, we screened clinical isolates of serovars Gallinarum, Dublin, Choleraesuis, Typhimurium, and Enteritidis for adhesion to and invasion into intestinal epithelial cell lines of human, porcine, and chicken origins. Thirty isolates with altered infectivity were used for genomic analyses, and 14 genes and novel mutations associated wi

Despite the availability of antibiotics and vaccines, Neisseria meningitidis remains a major cause of meningitis and sepsis in humans. Due to its extracellular lifestyle, bacterial adhesion to host cells constitutes an attractive therapeutic target. Here, we present a high-throughput microscopy-based approach that allowed the identification of compounds able to decrease type IV pilus-mediated interaction of bacteria with endothelial cells in the absence of bacterial or host cell toxicity. Compounds specifically inhibit the PilF ATPase enzymatic activity that powers type IV pilus extension but …

When a biomedical device is implanted into the body, its surface initially encounters biological fluids, resulting in the natural adsorption … occus epidermidis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We found that the effect of a serum albumin layer on bacterial adhesion was strain-dependent. Albumin pre-adsorption reduced the initial attachment of S. aureus and S. epidermidis to PDMS surfaces but had no impact on P. aeruginosa. However, with prolonged incubation, albumin-coated surfaces significantly promoted P. ae …

Biofilm formation and detachment in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) can lead to several operational issues. Here, an alternative biofilm control strategy of limiting bacterial adhesion by application of a poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide)-based nanogel coating on DWDS pipe walls was investigated. The nanogel coatings were successfully deposited on surfaces of four polymeric pipe materials commonly applied in DWDS construction. Nanogel-coated and non-coated pipe materials were characterized in terms of their surface hydrophilicity and roughness. Four DWDS relevant bacterial strains, re…

A number of studies appears to give emphasis to the role of prosthetic materials in determining microbial adherence and resistance to host defence and drug therapy. Aim of this study was to explore whether the direct contact with biomaterial substrata of different chemical nature could influence bacterial behaviour, determining possible changes in the bacteria population as far as antibiotic resistance is concerned. To this end, susceptibility to penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, cefamandole, imipenem, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin. ampicillin, cefazolin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chlora

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Biomaterial insertion often is required for closure of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The optimal biomaterial remains uncertain. This study was designed to compare a commonly used patch (polytetrafluoroethylene) with a recently available fabric, fluorinated polyester. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical performance, histological tissue-polymer interaction, bacterial adhesion, and shrinkage rates of biomaterial inserted endoscopically into a CDH lamb model.
METHODS: Polytetrafluoro-ethylene (PTFE) and fluorinated polyester (FP) were randomised for la…

Bacterial infections are frequently based on the binding of lectin-like adhesins to specific glycan determinants exposed on host cell recept … xposed on the human receptor CD147/Basigin, while fucosylated derivatives of this N-glycan impaired bacterial adhesion. Corroborating the inhibitory role of fucosylation on receptor recognition, adhesion of the meningococcus on nonhuman cells expressing human CD147 required prior defucosylation. These findings reveal the molecular basis of the selective receptor rec …

The purpose of this paper is to focus on functional characteristics of leukocyte adhesion molecules, on their localization and specific ligands. In fact, leukocyte chemotaxis and adhesion to endothelium is an essential step in promoting adequate immune response to bacterial infections. Since periodontal health is highly dependent on neutrophil function against the microbial dental plaque, defects in chemotaxis and adhesion of leukocytes to endothelium often result in severe, early onset periodontitis. Furthermore, oral lesions may be the only clinical manifestation of neutrophil impairment.

The clinico-experimental investigations including the treatment of 1131 patients with postoperative adhesive ileus enabled the conclusion to be drawn that there are various causes of the development of the intraperitoneal adhesive process and ileus but finally they all come to a traumatic or bacterial lesion of the peritoneal lining. The authors failed to observe a causeless (so called "pathological") formation of adhesions. The causes of the development of adhesive ileus were always associated with the main pathological processes in the abdominal cavity and the character of the operation.

This study evaluated the ability of topically applied amine fluoride (AmF) and AmF-tin fluoride to inhibit the adhesion of Streptococcus sanguis within a parallel plate flow cell system. One of three AmF compounds and two tin fluoride preparations significantly reduced the net bacterial adhesion to conditioned glass over a 1-h period. Tin(IV) fluoride inhibited S. sanguis adhesion to the greatest extent, and this was shown to be dependent on the formation of the conditioning film prior to agent application.

Bacterial adherence is thought to be a first important step in the pathogenesis of infection. It is now recognized that bacteria bind to and colonize mucosal surfaces in a highly selective manner via a lock- and key mechanism with complementary receptors on the mucosal surfaces of the host. We studied adherence to buccal cells of a panel of potential respiratory pathogens as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 18 smokers and 18 healthy non-smokers. Our results show an increased pneumococcal adherence in smokers compared to that

Systemic dissemination of microbes is critical for progression of many infectious diseases and is associated with most mortality due to bacterial infection. The physical mechanisms mediating a key dissemination step, bacterial association with vascular endothelia in blood vessels, remain unknown. Here, we show that endothelial interactions of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi under physiological shear stress mechanistically resemble selectin-dependent leukocyte rolling. Specifically, these interactions are mediated by transfer of mechanical load along a series of adhesion comple

In recent years, bone implant materials such as titanium and titanium alloys have been widely used in the biomedical field due to their excellent mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. However, in clinical practice, bacterial adhesion to the material surface and postoperative infection issues may lead to implantation failure. Based on the antibacterial mechanism, this review elaborated on the antibacterial surface design of titanium implants from the aspects of anti-bacterial adhesion, contact sterilization and photocontrol sterilization. Surface modification of titanium or titanium-…

Human infections by gastrointestinal bacterial pathogens are commonly associated with the consumption of contaminated food of animal origin (e.g., chicken, fish, eggs) or contaminated water. However, further contamination sources must be considered since number of Salmonella enterica infections associated with the consumption of food of non-animal origin (e.g., vegetables, fruits, nuts) are increasing. This gives raise to interest in understanding the interaction of S. enterica with leafy produce, such as various salads. Especially adhesion as initial step of contamination of salad by S. enter

Bacterial infections can exacerbate immune mediated dermatoses, possibly via superantigens produced by these bacteria. Therefore, we asked whether superantigens induce the expression of adhesion molecules which may then facilitate invasion of highly activated T cells into different organs. The influence of exfoliative toxin (ET) and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) stimulation on the expression of a broad panel of adhesion and costimulatory molecules was investigated by flow cytometry. We found that only the E-selectin ligands cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA) and sialylated L
