36 patients with agranulocytosis among them 29 cancer patients were treated in a Life Island (LI) during totally 990 days and were studied for their psychological reactions. Another group of 9 patients among them 6 leukemia patients were treated in reverse isolation (RI) during 578 days. The psychological reactions of these patients were equally studied and were compared with those of the first group. Main reactions to the isolation in the LI were signs of deprivation, specially movement deprivation, as well as aggressive and regressive behaviour. The patients in RI showed on the other hand se

Today at the beginning of the era of xenotransplantation, only simple and single observations about comparative physiology, biochemistry and anatomy are known. In addition, very few data exist which inform about the mechanisms after successful xenotransplantation. Nothing is known about the phenomena following successfully suppressed hyperacute xenogeneic rejection (HXR). Neither the elimination of a single factor nor the mitigation of whole systems has led to clinically relevant survival times (SVT). Pig organs transplanted into non-human primates survived a maximum of 22 days. The hope that

The feasibility of hepatic homotransplantation has been clearly established in principle inasmuch as several animals are still alive almost 3 years after complete hepatectomy and liver replacement. Both orthotopic and auxiliary operations are complicated surgical techniques. Nevertheless, the results in dogs are comparable to those which can be obtained with homotransplantation of the kidney. In man the problem is more difficult. In patients who have a need for such operations, there is invariably a metabolic disorder more complex than that caused by renal failure. In addition, the new organ m

With the discovery of v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B (BRAF) inhibitors, new treatment possibilities arose against metastatic melanoma. A frequent adverse effect of BRAF inhibitor therapy is the induction of epithelial proliferations such as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and verrucous papilloma. Here, we describe a case in which a patient developed extensive anal epithelial proliferations resembling condylomata acuminata, after starting vemurafenib treatment. This adverse effect has rarely been reported in the literature. Interestingly, the lesions in our patient were negativ

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), a leading cause of death from infection, completes its life cycle entirely in humans except for transmission through the air. To begin to understand how Mtb survives aerosolization, we mimicked liquid and atmospheric conditions experienced by Mtb before and after exhalation using a model aerosol fluid (MAF) based on the water-soluble, lipidic, and cellular constituents of necrotic tuberculosis lesions. MAF induced drug tolerance in Mtb, remodeled its transcriptome, and protected Mtb from dying in microdroplets desiccating in air. Yet survival was not passive:

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a well-adapted human virus, and its infection is exclusive to our species, generally beginning in the childhood and then persisting throughout the life of most of the affected adults. Although this infection generally remains asymptomatic, EBV can trigger life-threatening conditions under unclear circumstances. The EBV lifecycle is characterized by interactions with other viruses or bacteria, which increases the probability of awakening its pathobiont capacity. For instance, EBV infects B cells with the potential to alter the germinal center reaction (GCR)-an ad

Programmed cell death (apoptosis) plays an important role in the life of multicellular organisms and in the development of socially significant human diseases. Cytochrome c-cardiolipin complex (Cyt-CL) is formed at the very beginning of a cascade of apoptotic reactions. Nevertheless, the structure of the complex and the mechanism of its participation in lipid peroxidation in mitochondrial membranes are not yet understood. In previous work (Vladimirov, Y. A., et al. (2011) Crystallography, 56, 712-719), it was shown that the Cyt-CL complex precipitates in concentrated water solution, the sedime

Brain abscesses have been one of the most challenging lesions, both for surgeons and internists. From the beginning of the computed tomography (CT) era, the diagnosis and treatment of these entities have become easier and less invasive. The outcomes have become better with the improvement of diagnostic techniques, neurosurgery, and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Atypical bacterial abscesses are more often due to chemotherapy usage in oncology, long life expectancy in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and immunosuppression in conjunction with organ transplantation. Surgic

This chapter reviews the enduring effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) on neuroimmune function across the lifespan, including discussion of associated neurobehavioral alterations. Alcohol has potent teratogenic effects, with a large body of work linking PAE to perturbations in neuroimmune function. These PAE-related neuroimmune disturbances may have downstream effects on neurobehavioral function given the critical role of the neuroimmune system in central nervous system development. The neuroimmune system matures over time, playing distinct roles depending on the developmental processes

Since ERT for several LSDs treatment has emerged at the beginning of the 1980s with Orphan Drug approval, patients' expectancy and life quality have been improved. Most LSDs treatment are based on the replaced of mutated or deficient protein with the natural or recombinant protein. One of the main ERT drawback is the high drug prices. Therefore, different strategies trying to optimize the global ERT biotherapeutic production have been proposed. LVs, a gene delivery tool, can be proposed as an alternative method to generate stable cell lines in manufacturing of recombinant proteins. Since LVs ha

The One Health (OH) framework has gained prominence in recent years, promoting an approach integrating the health of humans, animals, and the environment. However, its implementation as it pertains to the microbial world has largely prioritized zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, as well as pandemic preparedness and management, narrowing its ecological scope and confining microorganisms to the realm of pathogens. We explore the historical development of OH to identify key gaps and limitations and argue for the integration of microorganisms as ecologically constitutive, critical to sus

Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects the liver of humans or humanoid primates. In humans, HBV infection often causes an inflammatory liver disease - hepatitis B. The virus is transmitted by perinatal, percutaneous and sexual exposure, as well as by close person-to-person contact. The latter occurs especially among young children, presumably by open cuts or sores. Vertical transmission from mothers to their neonates, or infection during the first year of life, results in persistent often lifelong infection in >90% of cases. In contrast, infection during adulthood is cleared in >95% of cases, a

Myelin plays an essential role in brain structure and function and the human brain is uniquely dependent on the elaboration of this late invention of evolution. Our brain has the most extensive and protracted process of myelination that extends to approximately age 50 in cortical regions that have the highest risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. This myelin-centered model of the human brain asserts that unique vulnerabilities of myelin, especially late-developed myelin, and the oligodendrocytes that produce it are directly pertinent to many uniquely human neuropsychiatric di

Recent decades have seen spectacular advances in understanding and managing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but paradoxically, clinical progress has stalled. Residual risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events is particularly vexing, given recognized lifestyle interventions and powerful modern medications. Why? Atherosclerosis begins early in life, yet clinical trials and mechanistic studies often emphasize terminal, end-stage plaques, meaning on the verge of causing heart attacks and strokes. Thus, current clinical evidence drives us to emphasize aggressive treatments that

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness and costs of alternative management strategies for patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who present with pulmonary symptoms.
DESIGN: Decision analysis comparing initial testing (arterial blood gas analysis, induced sputum analysis, or bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage) with empiric antibiotics (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or erythromycin). Subsequent steps in management are detailed based on the results of initial management. Patients were stratified by initial CD4 lymphocyte count (less than 200/mm3, 200-500/mm3, or

Our objectives were to describe, in Beagle dogs, the ontogenesis of beta (insulin-producing) and alpha (glucagon-producing) cells from fetal to early postnatal life and adulthood. In addition, to have some insight into interspecies comparison, Beagle dog pancreases were compared to pancreases from a Labrador and Chow Chow. At midgestation, the epithelium was dense, beta cells scarce, and alpha cells numerous and concentrated in the center of the pancreatic bud. From 36 to 45 days post conception (pc), beta cell numbers increased and the epithelium expanded and branched out. At 55 days pc, larg

Studies of the factors affecting reproductive success in group-living monkeys have traditionally focused on competitive traits, like the acquisition of high dominance rank. Recent research, however, indicates that the ability to form cooperative social bonds has an equally strong effect on fitness. Two implications follow. First, strong social bonds make individuals' fitness interdependent and the 'free-rider' problem disappears. Second, individuals must make adaptive choices that balance competition and cooperation-often with the same partners. The proximate mechanisms underlying these behavi

INTRODUCTION: Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs) are integral to learning, attention, and memory, and are prone to degeneration in Down syndrome (DS), Alzheimer's disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms that lead to the degeneration of these neurons are not known.
METHODS: Single-nucleus gene expression and Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin (ATAC) sequencing were performed on postmortem human basal forebrain from unaffected control and DS tissue samples at 0-2 years of age (n = 4 each).
RESULTS: Sequencing analysis of postmortem human basal fo

Any discussion on how we care for infants and toddlers must begin with the interests and needs of the children themselves. Therefore, this issue opens with an overview of the dramatic development that takes place during the first three years of life, which turns the dependent human newborn into a sophisticated three-year-old who walks, talks, solves problems, and manages relationships with adults and other children. This article explains the new understanding of brain development that has captured public attention in recent years, and links it to developments in infant behavior that are equall

Human T cell leukaemia virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is an oncogenic retrovirus that causes lifelong infection in ~5-10 million individuals globally. It is endemic to certain First Nations populations of Northern and Central Australia, Japan, South and Central America, Africa, and the Caribbean region. HTLV-1 preferentially infects CD4+ T cells and remains in a state of reduced transcription, often being asymptomatic in the beginning of infection, with symptoms developing later in life. HTLV-1 infection is implicated in the development of adult T cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated mye
