MDMA-assisted therapy: challenges, clinical trials, and the future of MDMA in treating behavioral disorders.

This chapter explores the complex and controversial path of MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other behavioral disorders. It covers MDMA's history from research to recreation to medicine, the pivotal trials, and the challenges faced by researchers. Despite recent setbacks for the clinical application of MDMA, the chapter argues that it holds potential for transforming psychiatry and discusses the uncertain future amidst ongoing debates over ethics, methodology, and political influence.

Association of pre-hospital precipitating factors with short- and long-term outcomes of acute heart failure patients: A report from the WET-HF2 registry.

BACKGROUND: Interest in clinical course preceding heart failure (HF) exacerbation has grown, with a greater emphasis placed on patients' clinical factors including precipitant factor (PF). Large-scale studies with precise PF documentation and temporal-outcome variation remain limited. METHODS: We reviewed prospectively collected 2412 consecutive patient-level records from a multicenter Japanese registry of hospitalized patients with HF (West Tokyo Heart Failure2 Registry: 2018-2020). Patients were categorized based on PFs: behavioral (i.e., poor adherence to physical activity, medicine, or di

Optimizing an extended care intervention to promote weight loss maintenance: Protocol for the OPT-X multiphase optimization strategy factorial trial.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss maintenance (WLM) remains a limitation of behavioral obesity interventions, as long-term adherence is burdensome and diminishes over time. Simplified recommendations and/or alternative delivery methods that target evidence-based WLM strategies may reduce burden to improve long-term outcomes. METHODS: This protocol describes a multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) trial using a 2x2x2x2 factorial design to optimize a 12-month extended care program for weight loss maintenance. Adults with obesity who achieve at least 5% weight loss during an initial 4-month behavioral w

Industry-Academic Collaboration in Nuclear Medicine: Proceedings from the 2024 CMIIT Industry Partners Circle.

Advancing and streamlining the development pipeline and translation of theranostic radiopharmaceuticals for application in nuclear medicine necessitates continued cross-sector collaboration among key stakeholders from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), industry partners, and academics to ensure continued growth and innovation and clinical translation. One mechanism the SNMMI has for such dialogue is its biennial Industry Partners Circle (IPC). After the success of prior IPCs, the Center for Molecular Imaging, Innovation, and Translation (CMIIT) hosted the latest IPC

Homicide concealed strangulation after bobbing reins in sexually sadistic homicide.

This case of sexually motivated homicide combined the perpetrator's obliteration of his victim's identity along with his attempt at concealment of the corpse and sexual gratification following ligature strangulation of a young unidentified female from a minority Indian state. Sexual bondage was evident with characteristic body tying in a typical posture to fuel the killer's sexual arousal and gratification before, during and then after strangling his victim with a scarf. The victim's body was left in a sack packed with vegetables and transported from the crime site and found abandoned in a par

The psychiatric aspects of tropical disorders.

The nature of psychiatric disorders in tropical regions is affected much more by the effect on the patient of certain environmental and cultural factors than by any specific features of tropical diseases. In places where the standards of health care and health education are not yet fully developed, abnormalities of physical development, particularly those affecting the development of the cerebral cortex, are of great importance. For example, protein-energy malnutrition may result in deficits in cerebral maturation and efficiency that reduce the capacity of the brain to manage its behavioural f

Expanding the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease beyond maternal behaviors.

Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) research has long emphasized maternal pregnancy behaviors as key determinants of child health. New evidence recently published in PLOS Medicine suggests the greatest opportunities to improve child health may lie in tackling socioeconomic disadvantage rather than maternal behavior alone.

Higher burden of neuropsychiatric symptom-like behaviors associated with canine cognitive dysfunction compared to normal aging in the Dog Aging Project.

Non-cognitive, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are nearly universal in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but investigation of their underlying biology is complicated by comparative medicine approaches that incompletely capture spontaneous disease, primarily using transgenic rodent models. The aged companion dog, which spontaneously develops an AD-like disease called canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), may help fill this translational gap. Using data from the Dog Aging Project with > 10,000 aged dogs (> 8 years old), we identify numerous behaviors in dogs "at-risk" for and with CCD that mirror NPS in h

A qualitative study of faculty members' views of women chairs.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent with the evolving role of the department chair in academic medicine is the entry of women physicians into chair positions. Because implicit biases that stereotypically masculine behaviors are required for effective leadership remain strong, examining faculty members' perceptions of their chair's leadership in medical school departments with women chairs can provide insight into the views of women leaders in academic medicine and the complex ways in which gender may impact these chairs' leadership style and actions. METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with 13

The Role of Street Medicine and Mobile Clinics for Persons Experiencing Homelessness: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: An estimated 5800 to 46,500 lives are lost due to homelessness each year. Experiencing homelessness and poor health are cyclically related, with one reinforcing the other. Mobile programs, which include vehicles that travel to deliver care, and street medicine, the act of bringing care to spaces where PEH live, may play a role in alleviating this burden by providing trusted, affordable, and accessible care to this community. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature on the role of mobile clinics and street medicine in providing care for PEH by searching

"We Can Run but We Can't Hide": Applying the Perspectives Model to What Ails Medicine.

Contemporary analyses of modern medicine's challenges often oversimplify what medicine has become and the stories physicians tell about themselves and their work. This paper seeks a more fulsome vision of medicine and the lives of medical practitioners by using the "Perspectives" model of psychiatry as a form of imaginative inquiry into the state of the profession and physician self-understanding. In The Perspectives of Psychiatry (1998), psychiatrists Paul McHugh and Phillip Slavney described four "perspectives" through which clinicians might more fully see and understand those they serve: di

Treatable traits in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a complex inflammatory sinonasal disease that deserves a multidisciplinary precision medicine approach. In a precision medicine model, a more pragmatic approach taking in consideration disease features that are potentially treatable should be considered. RECENT FINDINGS: Several treatable traits in CRSwNP can be identified: from disease-related ones, to extra-ENT features, to behavioral and environmental factors. This review article summarizes primarily the recent findings of CRSwNP-related treatable traits and how they c
