Simultaneous effects on vowel duration in American English: a covariance structure modeling approach.

The powerful techniques of covariance structure modeling (CSM) long have been used to study complex behavioral phenomenon in the social and behavioral sciences. This study employed these same techniques to examine simultaneous effects on vowel duration in American English. Additionally, this study investigated whether a single population model of vowel duration fits observed data better than a dual population model where separate parameters are generated for syllables that carry large information loads and for syllables that specify linguistic relationships. For the single population model, in…

Social science research in malaria prevention, management and control in the last two decades: an overview.

In the recent past, considerable progress has been made in understanding how human behavior and social organization, macro- and micro-level economic processes, and health and political systems affect responses to malaria at global, national, community, household, and individual levels. Advances in malaria-related social, behavioral, economic, evaluation, health systems, and policy (social science) research have resulted in improvements in the design and implementation of malaria prevention, management and control (PMC) strategies. Indeed, the past two decades chronicle dramatic advances in the

Nourishing collaboration: interdisciplinary nutrition education for health care professionals.

Nutrition education remains insufficient in many health care professional training programs despite the central role of diet in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Contemporary nutrition science increasingly recognizes that dietary behaviors and health outcomes are shaped by complex interactions among biological, behavioral, environmental, and food system factors. This perspective proposes an interdisciplinary framework for nutrition education that integrates the complementary expertise of physicians, dietitians, chefs, and farmers. By bridging clinical care, nutrition science, c

Bridging the gap between intervention and implementation science methodologies in physical activity research.

Despite substantial investment in physical activity research and the development of numerous evidence-based interventions, translation into routine practice remains slow and inconsistent. Dissemination and implementation (D&I) science offers methodological tools to address this research-to-practice gap; however, many intervention-trained physical activity researchers report uncertainty about how to design and evaluate implementation strategies and studies. This paper provides practical guidance for integrating D&I science into physical activity research by emphasizing its structural parallels

Networking health research in Britain: the post-war childhood leukaemia trials.

The treatment of childhood leukaemia is seen as a successful historical example of the operation of the randomized controlled trial and continues to inform contemporary policy making on such trials within health research. This article analyses the scientists' 'story of success' through historical research. It tells us about the organizational and professional structures of such research post-war in the United Kingdom, and examines the history of the cancer clinical trial through this particular example. The story reveals a more complex picture than the 'heroic' one, with key developments in th

Empowerment of women with purging-type bulimia nervosa through nutritional rehabilitation.

Since the primary role of psychoeducation in eating disorders is to act as a foundation for other interventions, nutritional rehabilitation should use the same therapeutic principles as psychotherapy. This paper looks at the possibility that traditional psychoeducational results can be enhanced in patients with bulimia nervosa by a new nutritional rehabilitation programme focused on psychobiological reorganization of eating behaviour as opposed to the prescription of regular eating patterns. Forty women with purging-type bulimia nervosa were enrolled for a 24-week experimental period of cognit

Cognitive development and behaviour in very low birthweight twins at four years.

This study included two groups of 37 children, one of twins and the other singletons at 4 years of age. All subjects has birthweights under 1500 grams and individuals in the groups were matched for birth date, gender and birthweight. Except when parental socio-economic status was taken into account, no significant differences between twins and singletons were observed on any of the results of The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, nor were there any when the twins and singletons were divided into groups with birthweights < 1000 grams and 1000 to 1499 grams. When cognitive scores were analysed

Adolescent pregnancy: a combined obstetric and pediatric management approach.

During the past decade, the relative increase in adolescent pregnancy has forced physicians and other health professionals who provide services to teenagers to be aware of the factual data relating to teenage pregnancy and the pertinent social issues in order to serve as advocates for both the parent and the child. In this article, we review the existing demographic data regarding adolescent pregnancy in conjunction with current approaches to intervention programs for the maintenance of a stable environment and optimal development of the parent and the child.

Diversity and critical forces in dental education.

Critical issues that affect dental education and the connection between science and practice include the community, managed patient care, public skepticism and fiscal support, and shifting demography in patterns of oral disease as well as the background of students entering the dental profession. During the past several decades, there have been major shifts in the patterns of oral disease, most recently described in results of the NHANES III dental survey. The diversity and background of students entering the dental profession have changed dramatically as well, and present estimates of change

Insomnia Phenotypes, Cardiovascular Risk and Their Link to Brain Health.

About 30% to 40% of the general population experiences insomnia symptoms of difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, and another 10% to 15% of the general population experiences chronic insomnia disorder. The prevalence of insomnia is disproportionately higher in people with cardiometabolic risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and neurocognitive disorders, including vascular cognitive impairment. In fact, recent meta-analytic evidence from epidemiological studies has demonstrated that insomnia, especially when accompanied by objective short sleep duration, is a r

Single-trial visually evoked potentials predict both individual choice and market outcomes.

A central assumption in the behavioral sciences is that choice behavior generalizes enough across individuals that measurements from a sampled group can predict the behavior of the population. Following from this assumption, the unit of behavioral sampling or measurement for most neuroimaging studies is the individual; however, cognitive neuroscience is increasingly acknowledging a dissociation between neural activity that predicts individual behavior and that which predicts the average or aggregate behavior of the population suggesting a greater importance of individual differences than is ty…

A theoretical model of co-worker responses to work reintegration processes.

PURPOSE: Emerging research has shown that co-workers have a significant influence on the return-to-work outcomes of partially fit ill or injured employees. By drawing on theoretical findings from the human resource and wider behavioral sciences literatures, our goal was to formulate a theoretical model of the influences on and outcomes of co-worker responses within work reintegration. METHODS: From a search of 15 data bases covering the social sciences, business and medicine, we identified articles containing models of the factors that influence co-workers' responses to disability accommodati…

Implementation science outcomes of a gender-focused HIV and alcohol risk-reduction intervention in usual-care settings in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest HIV prevalence globally, which disproportionately affects women. Hazardous alcohol use reduces antiretroviral adherence which can lead to adverse health. Few evidence-based interventions addressing hazardous alcohol use and HIV have been implemented in real-world settings. This study aimed to evaluate implementation outcomes from the Women's Health CoOp (WHC)-an evidence-based gender-focused HIV intervention-which was implemented in Cape Town. METHODS: We conducted this implementation science trial using a modified stepped-wedge design. Four health cli

The Potential Role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Programs in Reducing Teen Dating Violence and Intimate Partner Violence.

Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are growing fields that provide job stability, financial security, and health prosperity for professionals in these fields. Unfortunately, females are underrepresented in STEM, which is potentially both a consequence and precipitant of gender inequity in the United States. In addition to the financial and health benefits, increasing the number of girls and women in STEM fields may also indirectly prevent and/or reduce teen dating violence and intimate partner violence by: (1) increasing women's financial independence, thereby reducing dependenc
