Prevalence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo among motocross racers: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) among motocross racers after cross-country up and downhill activities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case-control study included 40 motocross racers (39 males, 1 female; mean age 26 years; range 21 to 43 years) and 40 healthy controls (30 males, 10 females; mean age 28 years; range 22 to 43 years) who had no hearing or balance problems. The Dix-Hallpike maneuver was applied to confirm the diagnosis of BPPV. Patients with BPPV were administered the Epley maneuver every week for one month and f

[Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: analysis of our population and role of caloric tests].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo in those patients who seek medical care. Although videonystagmography seems the most indicated diagnostic test, we tried to decrease the requested caloric tests to optimise resources and reduce associated costs. METHODS: We developed a diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm for patients with suspected BPPV whose provocation tests are positive to evaluate the need for caloric testing. We analysed the results of its application on 98 patients who were referred to our Neuro-otology Unit over 15

Protracted benign paroxysmal positional vertigo following osteotome sinus floor elevation: a case report.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a relatively rare condition characterized by onset of rotation dizziness triggered by head movements or change in posture. BPPV etiology includes head injury, infection, vascular disorders, surgical trauma, and idiopathic events. This report presents a case of protracted BPPV following osteotome sinus floor elevation and simultaneous implant placement. A 49-year-old female suffered intense vertigo and nausea immediately after implant placement using an osteotome sinus floor elevation procedure, especially when changing head position while sitting

Efficacy of a new treatment maneuver for posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Existing treatment maneuvers for posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (PC-BPPV) include the Semont liberatory maneuver (SLM) and canalith repositioning maneuver (CRM). Independent investigations reveal that these maneuvers provide an excellent outcome for most patients. However, certain aspects of these maneuvers, such as hyperextension of the neck for CRM and brisk lateral motion for the SLM, are contraindicated for patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency, cervical spondylosis, back problems, and so forth. A hybrid approach, the Gans repositioning maneuver (GRM) was develo

Mechanism of posterior semicircular canal stimulation in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

A quantitative study of the stimuli and vestibulo-ocular response associated with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was made to test and further develop the canalithiasis theory of BPPV. The angular velocities of the head in the planes of the semicircular canals during the Dix-Hallpike test were measured in four healthy subjects using electromagnetic sensors to record the position of the head in a six degrees of freedom paradigm. Next, the nystagmus reactions in seven patients diagnosed with idiopathic BPPV were recorded with video-oculography. The characteristics of the vestibulo-oc

Wavelet Scalogram-Based Nystagmus Classification for Automated Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Subtype Diagnosis.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vestibular vertigo, yet accurate diagnosis remains challenging without specialist expertise. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic algorithm for BPPV using video-nystagmography (VNG) recordings. A total of 1352 VNG recordings were collected from patients with posterior semicircular canal (PSCC) BPPV (n = 234), lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) BPPV (canalolithiasis, n = 188; cupulolithiasis, n = 58), and healthy controls (n = 224) at a single tertiary referral hospital, y

Novel Digital Tools for Clinical Research: Vestibular Simulation for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most prevalent peripheral vestibular disorder, yet important aspects of its diagnostic variability and treatment response remain incompletely understood. In recent years, advances in computational modeling have provided new opportunities to explore the biomechanical basis of otoconial displacement within the semicircular canals. This review examines the role of vestibular simulation technologies in enhancing both mechanistic understanding and clinical practice. Three-dimensional models that integrate labyrinthine anatomy, head kinematics, gravitation

Recurrent Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in DFNB16 Patients with Biallelic STRC Gene Deletions.

OBJECTIVE: Deletions of STRC gene (DFNB16) account for 12% of isolated congenital mild to moderate hearing loss (HL). In mice, the stereocilin protein, encoded by STRC , is present in the vestibular kinocilium embedded in the otoconial membrane of the utricular macula. Despite this, effects on vestibular function have not been widely investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in a cohort of DFNB16 patients. STUDY DESIGN: Observational descriptive epidemiological study. SETTING: Single-center study, in a tertiary referr

Early treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo secondary to sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) accompanied by benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is relatively common in the clinic. There are unified standards for the treatment of primary BPPV with good reduction effect, while there are few studies on the treatment of BPPV secondary to SSNHL within 1 week of onset. The study was to investigate the treatment of BPPV secondary to SSNHL and compare its manual reduction with that of primary BPPV. We selected 90 patients with BPPV accompanied by SSNHL within a week of onset and 210 primary BPPV patients at Hebei Provincial Eye Hospital from J

Diagnosing the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo via 1D and deep-learning composite model.

BACKGROUND: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the leading cause of vertigo, and its characteristic nystagmus induced by positional maneuvers makes it a good model for Artificial Intelligence (AI) diagnosis. However, during the testing procedure, up to 10 min of indivisible long-range temporal correlation data are produced, making the AI-informed real-time diagnosing unlikely in clinical practice. METHODS: A combined 1D and Deep-Learning (DL) composite model was proposed. Two separate cohorts were recruited, with one for model generation and the other for evaluation of model's rea

Association between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and osteoporosis: two nested case-control studies.

UNLABELLED: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was related to a 1.28 times higher risk of osteoporosis. In addition, osteoporosis was associated with a 1.34 times higher risk of BPPV. This bidirectional relation was maintained after adjusting past medical histories and lifestyle factors, including obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. In subgroup analyses, only women showed a reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION: A previous population cohor

Recurrence in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the lateral semicircular canal.

OBJECTIVES: There are 3 subtypes of lateral canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Persistent geotropic positional nystagmus is due to a light cupula, heavy cupula produces apogeotropic positional nystagmus, and canalolithiasis accounts for transient geotropic positional nystagmus. The aims of this study were to determine the recurrence rate and to examine the number of times of recurrence in each of the 3 subtypes. METHODS: Subjects were patients with light cupula (n = 47), heavy cupula (n = 48), and canalolithiasis (n = 45). We investigated the number of times of recurrence and determi

Disability perceived by primary care patients with posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. Little is known on how posterior canal BPPV affects health-related quality of life in patients diagnosed and treated at primary care facilities or on whether patients with subjective and objective disease perceive the effects differently. This study was designed to describe how patients diagnosed with posterior canal BPPV in primary care perceive disability. METHODS: Cross-sectional descriptive study performed at two urban primary care centers. Participants were patients aged 18 years or older with su
