Bacterial cellulose based superabsorbent production: A promising example for high value-added utilization of clay and biology resources.

Superabsorbent was synthesized from bacterial cellulose (BC) generated by in situ fermentation on bentonite inorganic gel (BIG). For BIG preparation, the effect of sodium agent's type and content, temperature and time of sodium-modification, and gelling agent's type and content on the viscosity of BIG were learned to optimize the synthesis process. For polymerization, the effect of different factors including ratio of monomer to substrate (modified BC from in situ fermentation), content of initiator and crosslinker, monomer neutralization degree, reaction temperature and time on the performanc

Submersion in Industrial Powders That Lead to Tracheal Impaction and an Unusual Intubation.

BACKGROUND: Silica, also known as quartz, is a naturally occurring compound that has many common uses, such as for glass, pottery, and concrete. Similarly, bentonite, another natural compound found in many clays, has been used for a variety of purposes from cat litter to bulk laxatives. Both are known for their fluid-absorptive properties. The long-term effects of exposure such as developing silica pneumoconiosis are well studied; acute inhalational injuries of similar substances are also documented. CASE REPORT: We discuss the difficult airway case of a 32-year-old man who presented to the e

Influence of environmental factors on virus detection by RT-PCR and cell culture.

The effects of clay, humic acid, u.v. light and shellfish tissue residues on the detection of poliovirus type 2 from environmental samples by culture and RT-PCR were investigated. RT-PCR showed 10-100 times greater sensitivity for PV2 detection in the absence of sample contaminants than did culture by plaque assay in BGM cell monolayers. Bentonite clay (100-1000 mg l-1) and shellfish tissue residues reduced virus detection by plaque assay, but the effect of bentonite was mitigated by simple elution procedures. Bentonite clay, humic acid (5-150 mg l-1) and mussel tissue reduced virus detection

A comparison of tests for thyroglobulin antibody.

A comparison is made of tests for thyroglobulin antibody, using gel diffusion, electroprecipitin, bentonite flocculation, tanned red cell agglutination, and latex slide agglutination techniques on sera from cases of Hashimoto's disease and other thyroid disorders. Any increase in gamma globulin was also noted from the serum electrophoretic pattern. The gel diffusion and electroprecipitin tests are shown to be comparable in their sensitivity, as are the bentonite flocculation and tanned red cell agglutination tests. The flocculation and agglutination tests were oversensitive. The latex slide te

Synthesis and Characterization of Methoxy-Exfoliated Montmorillonite Nanosheets as Potential Carriers of 5-Fluorouracil Drug with Enhanced Loading, Release, and Cytotoxicity Properties.

Natural bentonite clay (BE) underwent modification steps that involved the exfoliation of its layers into separated nanosheets (EXBE) and further functionalization of these sheets with methanol, forming methoxy-exfoliated bentonite (Mth/EXBE). The synthetically modified products were investigated as enhanced carriers of 5-fluorouracil as compared to raw bentonite. The modification process strongly induced loading properties that increased to 214.4 mg/g (EXBE) and 282.6 mg/g (Mth/EXBE) instead of 124.9 mg/g for bentonite. The loading behaviors were illustrated based on the kinetic (pseudo-first

Shear Behavior of GMTC/BPC-GCL Interface Under Dry and Hydrated Conditions with Varying Polymer Content.

Polymeric geosynthetics serve as fundamental components of engineered composite liners in waste containment facilities. The interface shear behavior between a coextruded textured geomembrane (GMTC) and a bentonite-polymer composite geosynthetic clay liner (BPC-GCL) was investigated under both dry and hydrated conditions, with varying polymer content (0%, 3.5%, and 5.5%), using large-scale direct shear tests. Hydration of BPC-GCL was found to significantly reduce GMTC/BPC-GCL interface shear strengths, with the magnitude of reduction increasing with normal stress. For the BPC-GCL with 3.5% poly

Is a new generation of mycotoxin clay adsorbents safe in a pig's diet?

BACKGROUND: Bentonites, as a clay mineral, serve in pig farms as adsorbents of toxic substances. They are mainly used to reduce the negative impact of mycotoxins to maintain the performance and health status of animals. The new genotypes of pigs are highly sensitive to a range of antinutrients, including mycotoxins. Currently, attention is focused on more effective adsorbents of mycotoxins with a higher adsorption capacity. Such materials are in great demand among feed manufacturers. However, there is a concern that these new materials may also adsorb too many essential nutrients and decrease

Competitive Effects of Cu(II) on the Adsorption of Cd(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) from Neutral Mine Drainage Using Low-Cost Adsorbents.

Neutral mine drainage may contain potentially toxic metals even under circum-neutral pH conditions. This study investigated the competitive effect of Cu(II) on the removal of Cd(II), Mn(II), and Zn(II) from real neutral mine drainage using unmodified bentonite, natural zeolite, and biomass-derived fly ash. Batch experiments were conducted for 120 min using 0.5 g of adsorbent per 100 cm3 of mine water, with Cu(II) additionally introduced at 20 mg·dm-3. Biomass fly ash increased the solution pH to 9.4 and achieved the highest removal efficiencies in the presence of Cu, reaching 98.8% for Cu(II),

Amendment-assisted reduction of lead and cadmium risks in calcareous soil: integrated assessment using DTPA, SBRC and mouse bioassay.

Reducing soil heavy metal health risks, via the use of immobilizing agents, can be challenging in high pH, calcareous soils. A contaminated calcareous soil (pH = 8.04, total Cd = 6.34, total Pb = 387 mg kg-1) was amended with soluble phosphate, bentonite or lime and incubated for 360 d. Then, lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) bioavailabilities (RBA) were assessed using a mouse model, heavy metal bioaccessibilities (BAC) were assessed using the Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium, and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable soil heavy metals were determined. Experimental evaluation of an environmentally friendly drilling fluid for clay stabilization in shale formations.

To face the problems of shale drilling, oil-based fluids, mineral salts, and polymers are used, but they have limitations such as high preparation cost, hazardous environmental impact, and limited applicability in high-pressure, high-temperature environments. Therefore, introducing an environmentally friendly drilling fluid capable of inhibiting clay swelling can be beneficial for drilling shale layers and other layers containing swelling clays. Glycerin is ecologically friendly and has high stability under various environmental conditions. In the present research, a thorough set of experiment

Evaluation of shale and organoclays as sorbent additives for low-permeability soil containment barriers.

A natural shale and four synthetic organoclays were compared as potential sorbent additives to containment barriers at hazardous waste sites. Trimethylphenyl ammonium bentonite (TMPA-bent) was shown in batch experiments to have the greatest sorption capacities for 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, and methyl isobutyl ketone, followed by the shale and a commercial organoclay. Sorption capacities were lowest for hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bentonite (HDTMA-bent) and hexadecyl pyridinium bentonite (HDP-bent). Operative sorption mechanisms for the organoclays depended on the size of the o

Mineral and Organic Materials as Factors Reducing the Effect of Petrol on Heavy Metal Content in Soil.

As industrial production increases worldwide, so does the demand for fuels. The transport of fuels from the point of production to the end user poses a risk of environmental pollution, both during transport and during combustion in internal combustion engines. The soil is a part of the environment which is particularly sensitive to contamination by petroleum substances. For this reason, research has been carried out into the possibility of reducing the impact of petrol on the content of heavy metals in the soil using various materials, both mineral (bentonite, calcium oxide) and organic (compo

Could organoclay be used as a promising natural adsorbent for efficient and cost-effective dye wastewater treatment?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

There is an urgent need for developing eco-friendly adsorbents for dye wastewater treatment with high efficiency and low cost. Meanwhile, organoclay has received an increasing attention as a natural adsorbent for dye removal. However, no comprehensive investigation has been conducted to evaluate the feasibility of this approach in terms of operation cost and removal efficiency. In this research, we intend to answer this question: could organoclay be used as an efficient and cost-effective approach for dye wastewater treatment? In line with that, after characterization of the Na-bentonite and m

Organics removal and protein recovery from wastewater discharged during the production of chondroitin sulfate.

Bentonite, chitosan and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) were applied to treat wastewater discharged during the production of chondroitin sulfate and recover protein dissolved in the wastewater. The results showed that the combination of pH 9.00, 3-4 mL chitosan solution, 2 g of bentonite and 5 mL of 8% PAC solution per 100 mL of wastewater with a 4.0 h flocculation time were the optimal conditions for the recovery of protein and removal of total organic carbon (TOC) from wastewater. A pilot-scale test also was conducted, and 130 kg (dry weight) of sediment was obtained from 1.1 m(3) of discharged

Mechanistic insights into modification of clay minerals by detergent-derived surfactants and their impact on petroleum hydrocarbon uptake.

Understanding how surfactants interact with clay minerals is essential for controlling organoclay properties and improving hydrocarbon adsorption performance. However, distinguishing between surfactant adsorption on external surfaces and within interlayer galleries remains challenging using conventional techniques. In this study, we introduce a combined Washburn-immersion methodology that enables both quantification of total surfactant adsorption and localization of adsorbed species. Bentonite and kaolinite were modified using three commercial detergent formulations at concentrations below the

Large-scale laboratory investigation of the performance of a novel isolation particle layer for offshore final disposal sites.

The complex seabed conditions and ocean environment pose significant challenges to the material selection and construction of bottom liners for offshore final disposal sites. To overcome the challenges, this study proposed a novel isolation particle layer for offshore final disposal sites. The isolation particle was composed by salt-resistant bentonite coating material and cement core material (D10 was 10 mm in core diameter and 2 mm in coating thickness; D20 was 20 mm and 4 mm). Upon immersion in artificial seawater, the isolation particles underwent expansion, leading to the formation of the

An environment-friendly composite as an adsorbent for removal Cu (II) ions.

The low-cost composite film was prepared by incorporating chitosan, berry soap fruit extract (rarasaponin), and bentonite as the raw materials. The produced chitosan/rarasaponin/bentonite (CRB) composite exhibits outstanding adsorption capability toward copper metal ions (Cu(II)). A series of static adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the isotherm and kinetic properties of CRB composite in the adsorption process. The adsorption equilibrium shows a good fit with the Langmuir isotherm model; the CRB composite has maximum uptake of Cu (II) of 412.70 mg/g; the kinetic adsorption d

Preparation, Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Nanoclay Antimicrobial Activities and Elicitor Capacity.

Clay-based nanocomposites (nanoclays) are interesting systems to hold a wide type of active substances with a wide field of industrial applications. Bentonite-chitosan nanoclay was obtained via cationic exchange of natural bentonite (Bent) with an aqueous solution of chitosan (CS). Their physicochemical and morphological properties were discussed under the light of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Bent-CS characterization indicated that CS was intercalated in 10% (w/w). This polycationic polymer was orient
