Hot Food and Beverage Consumption and the Risk of Esophageal Cancer: A Meta-Analysis.

CONTEXT: Esophageal cancer is a neoplasm with a poor prognosis. Its two histologic subtypes, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), have been associated with different risk factors. The possibility of an association between the consumption of hot food and beverages and esophageal cancer, especially ESCC, has long been suspected, presenting a potentially modifiable risk factor. A meta-analysis of existing observational studies was performed to provide a quantitative estimate of the risk of esophageal cancer associated with the consumption of hot food and

Oral carbohydrate loading with 18% carbohydrate beverage alleviates insulin resistance.

Preoperative 12.6% oral carbohydrate loading is an element of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol aimed at alleviating postoperative insulin resistance; however, in Japan, beverages with 18% carbohydrate content are generally used for preoperative carbohydrate loading. We investigated the effect of 18% carbohydrate loading on alleviating insulin resistance. Six healthy volunteers participated in this crossover-randomized study and were segregated into 2 groups: volunteers in the carbohydrate-loading group (group A) who fasted from after 9 pm and ingested 375 mL of a beverage co

Beverage choice among native american and african american urban women.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about beverage preference, especially among understudied urban minority populations. Also, most studies do not differentiate between beer and malt liquor or among wine, wine coolers, and fortified wine. This article examines whether ethnicity or drinking frequency are associated with beverage choice, considering six types of alcoholic beverages: beer, wine, spirits, malt liquor, fortified wine, and wine coolers. METHODS: Data were analyzed from Native American (n = 70) and African American (n = 129) urban pregnant women who reported drinking in the 12 months before

Effect of the type of beverage and meat consumed by alcoholics with alcoholic liver disease.

We analyzed meat products and alcoholic beverage preference in patients with the three stages of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) compared with controls using diet history data. Daily consumption of total alcohol, types of alcoholic beverages, and types of meat and meat products in grams was obtained by dietary history taken from patients with biopsy proven stage of ALD. A strong association was found between the ALD subjects and total alcohol and beer consumption. There was a significant increase in the consumption of total pig products, pork, and offal in the ALD groups compared with controls.

The blood alcohol curve as a function of time and type of beverage: methodological considerations.

Six male subjects came to the laboratory on three different occasions and drank either spirits, wine, or beer. The spirits drink contained 1.0 ml of pure alcohol/kg body wt. and the other two drinks were 20% larger. The blood alcohol curve was monitored every 15 min. The mean peak level was roughly the same for the three types of beverages although the peak was reached later for wine and beer. For spirits and beer the curve dropped off smoothly after the peak was reached while for wine the peak level was maintained for about 60 min. Individual curves varied greatly for all three beverage types

Valorization of post-distillation Helichrysum italicum biomass for functional beverage infusions.

Helichrysum italicum (HI) is an aromatic plant primarily cultivated for essential oil production, though its water extracts also have known health effects. Distillation produces large amounts of plant residue that still contains water-soluble bioactive polyphenols. This study compared the chemical composition of infusions prepared from HI before and after distillation and evaluated their short-term physiological effects. To improve sensory acceptability, HI was blended with the herbal mixture Vitalplant. HPLC analysis showed that most water-soluble polyphenols remain extractable from the post-
