For patients with neurological damage of the central nervous system, such as that due to cerebrovascular accident (CVA), standing balance training is a critical therapeutic procedure to be undertaken before walking and self-care training. The identification and characterization of neurological disorder in postural steadiness will enhance our understanding of the postural control system, and help to identify patients at risk of falls in the CVA population. This paper discusses the design and clinical evaluation of a new biofeedback training device for static (postural steadiness) performance of

Electromyographic biofeedback and behavioral control techniques were used to treat two patients who suffered from Bell's palsy. Both patients (one case with a long history of Bell's Palsy which included extensive surgery to her face, the other of more recent onset) appeared to have benefited from these procedures and also perceived themselves as having done so. It is recommended that the noninvasive techniques outlined should be tried at an early stage in this condition in order to: (1) prevent the acquisition of inappropriate behavior; (2) accelerate progress toward normal facial functioning;

The principal methods of the treatment of the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) are reviewed. The following methods of the action on the patient are distinguished: psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, remedial gymnastics, correction of respiratory disorders according to the principle of the biological feed-back mechanism, recurrent respiration or carbon dioxide inhalations. Emphasis is laid on the importance of an individual approach to the institution of the treatment measures. The relationship between the HVS and respiratory diseases is discussed. The authors advance an opinion that every patient m

Reactions of the respiratory system to the inhalation of a hypoxic gas mixture were compared when the test subjects (young healthy men) practised normal breathing or breathing with a stable alveolar PCO2. In the latter case the test subjects controlled their lung ventilation using the biofeedback technique. In this manner hyperventilation and related hypocapnia were eliminated. The possibility of practical application of biofeedback to the control of man's respiration in situations that may cause hypocapnia is discussed.

Although biofeedback has been of value in treating spastic paresis and torticollis, its effectiveness in other movement disorders is less clear. Blepharospasm, which has no definitive treatment, often has a strong psychogenic component. The authors report the use of electromyographic and temperature biofeedback in a women with blepharospasm who had responded poorly to psychotherapy. Her improvement during biofeedback treatment further elucidated psychogenic factors contributing to the disorder. At 3-months follow-up it seemed that the patient's secondary gain from the blepharospasm diminished

BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence (FI) is a debilitating condition which reduces quality of life (QOL). Conservative management with education, pelvic floor exercise and pharmacological agents are first-line treatment. Following which, biofeedback therapy (BFT) is recommended. Although well described in the West, existing literature on its efficacy in Asian populations remains sparse. The primary aim of our study is to evaluate the efficacy of BFT in improvement of symptoms, QOL and overall satisfaction in our Asian population.
METHODS: Patients with moderate FI in Singapore General Hospital be

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may be defined as a psychosomatic disease. Most primary care physicians do not want to undertake psychosomatic treatment, but may find it necessary in refractory patients. Brief psychosomatic treatments, providing patients with betterways to cope with stress, reduce the symptoms. The literature on the psychosomatic treatment for IBS is summarized. Supportive therapy and autogenic training that produce relaxation response appear to be effective. Other special psychological therapies that require specialized training, such as hypnosis, biofeedback, cognitive therap

There is little systematic research on how the training load of an athlete in the preparatory period affects their functional state. This study aims to develop and test a new targeted training method for improving the functional state of boxers aged 15-16 (15.6 ± 0.5) years using heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback. A total of 50 teenage male athletes participated in the study. The proposed program involved biofeedback-based physical training coupled with breathing and emotional regulation exercises. Here, the functional status assessment involved psychological (attention, working memory,

The temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a heterogeneous group of painful musculoskeletal conditions that include masticatory muscle pain. TMD is a common condition but its etiology is, as yet, poorly understood. Although TMD can be quite disabling, most patients presenting with symptoms improve regardless of treatment type. This article focuses on nonpharmacologic treatments for TMD; recent articles on etiology, assessment, and treatment for this muscle pain condition are reviewed. Psychological approaches include biofeedback, minimal therapist contact interventions, relaxation, and cogniti

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Non-pharmacological migraine treatments are commonly used for prevention, may be preferred in sensitive groups such as pregnancy, childhood, and older adults, can be applied as an adjunct to pharmacological treatment, or selected according to the patient condition/preferences. However, most studies are based on heterogeneous designs, resulting in uncertainties regarding level of evidence. This review aimed to summarize the current scientific evidence on the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in migraine, and their role in clinical practice.
RECENT FINDINGS:

Disruptions in interoception, the awareness of internal bodily signals, are strongly linked to various psychological and physiological conditions, including eating disorders (EDs) such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Despite growing evidence that altered interoceptive processing is central to EDs, the use of interoceptive-based interventions (IBIs) in this population remains under-explored. This systematic review aims to evaluate the application and efficacy of IBIs in the treatment of eating disorders. A comprehensive search of PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic flutter (DF) is a rare condition characterized by involuntary contractions of the diaphragmatic muscle, often accompanied by accessory respiratory muscle contractions. Symptoms can include epigastric pulsations, abdominal pain, and reflux. Diagnosis is challenging, and treatment is based on individual cases. This study presents the first case series of DF assessed using high-resolution esophageal manometry (HREM), electromyography (EMG), and plethysmography belts, and the symptomatic improvement through biofeedback therapy.
METHODS: This case series includes patients

OBJECTIVES: Autonomic regulation has been identified as a potential regulator of pain via vagal nerve mediation, assessed through heart rate variability (HRV). Non-invasive vagal nerve stimulation (nVNS) and heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) have been proposed to modulate pain. A limited number of studies compare nVNS and HRVB in persons with chronic pain conditions. This systematic review compared interventions of nVNS and HRVB in adults with long-standing pain conditions.
METHODS: PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane library were used to retrieve the ra

BACKGROUND: Lower back pain (LBP) is a disability that affects a large proportion of the population and treatment for this condition has been shifting towards a more individualized, patient-centered approach. There has been a recent uptake in the utilization and implementation of wearable sensors that can administer biofeedback in various industrial, clinical, and performance-based settings. Despite this, there is a strong need to investigate how wearable sensors can be used in a sensorimotor (re)training approach, including how sensory biofeedback from wearable sensors can be used to improve

The dislocation of the shoulder is a common complication of stroke, which is easy to occur after 3 months of stroke, with an incidence of 70%. There is no single standard for the pathogenesis of the disease, but the atrophy of the associated stability muscle, such as the triangle muscle, the oblique, and the upper muscle of the gonfield, may be the cause of the disease. In order to observe the effects of Electromyographic Biofeedback (EMGBF) combined with different motion directions on upper limb function with shoulder dislocation, a total of 84 patients with shoulder dislocation from May 2020
