Biogenic nanopalladium production by self-immobilized granular biomass: application for contaminant remediation.

Microbial granules cultivated in an aerobic bubble column sequencing batch reactor were used for reduction of Pd(II) and formation of biomass associated Pd(0) nanoparticles (Bio-Pd) for reductive transformation of organic and inorganic contaminants. Addition of Pd(II) to microbial granules incubated under fermentative conditions resulted in rapid formation of Bio-Pd. The reduction of soluble Pd(II) to biomass associated Pd(0) was predominantly mediated by H2 produced through fermentation. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analysis revealed that the produced Pd nanoparticles we…

Biosorption of Cr(III) from aqueous solution using algal biomass spirogyra spp.

In the present investigation, a fresh water green algae spirogyra spp. was used as an inexpensive and efficient biosorbent for Cr(III) removal from aqueous solution. The algal biomass was treated with 0.1M NaOH, 0.2M CaCl(2) and 5% HCHO. The biosorption efficiency was compared with untreated biomass. The effects of various physico-chemical parameters were studied, e.g. pH 3.0-6.0, initial metal ions concentration 20-150mgL(-1), algal dose 1.0-3.0gL(-1), and contact time 15-180min, respectively. Biosorption of Cr(III) is highly pH dependent. Maximum 81.02% adsorption of Cr(III) was observed wit…

Biomass concentration and biofilm characteristics in high-performance fluidized-bed biofilm reactors.

Two laboratory scale fluidized-bed biofilm reactors (FBBRs) were used to investigate the biomass concentration and the biofilm characteristics in a high performance FBBR used for the denitrification of exceptionally high-nitrate wastewater (1000 mg-N/L). Reported correlations by other workers for predicting the biomass concentration in FBBR were examined for their validity in comparison with the experimental results of this study and the best set of applicable correlations was recommended. The effects of the two main operational parameters, the superficial velocity and nitrogen loading rate on…

An evaluation of benthic macroinvertebrate biomass methodology : Part 1. Laboratory analytical methods.

Evaluation of analytical methods employed for wet weight (live or preserved samples) of benthic macroinvertebrates reveals that centrifugation at 140 x gravity for one minute yields constant biomass estimates. Less relative centrifugal force increases chance of incomplete removal of body moisture and results in weighing error, while greater force may rupture fragile macroinvertebrates, such as mayflies. Duration of specimen exposure in ethanol, formalin, and formol (formaling-ethanol combinations) causes significant body weight loss with within 48 hr formalin and formol cause less body weight …

Microbial community dynamics mediate rapid biomass loss and phosphorus recycling in pelagic Sargassum.

Sargassum blooms in the tropical North Atlantic have surged to unprecedented levels, causing massive algal tides that severely impact coastal ecosystems. To improve the current understanding of Sargassum biomass dynamics and the contribution of this productive algal bloom to carbon and nutrient fluxes between the Atlantic and the Caribbean, we characterized the growth and decomposition rates of this pelagic alga, nutrient release rates during litter decay, and the bacterial microbiome at several stages of this decay. The analysis revealed no exceptional growth under increased nutrient availabi…

However, how coast … e IOD raise the thermocline and mixing intensity, increase nutrient availability, and phytoplankton biomass. In contrast, downwelling KWs generated by equatorial westerly wind anomalies during negative IOD further constrain the oligotrophy-limited phytoplankton baseline, resulting in a substantially weaker biological response. Intensive cage aquaculture suppresses microbial biomass and restructures functional potential in coastal ecosystems.

Coastal cage aquaculture represents a significant anthropogenic disturbance that profoundly alters marine ecosystems by influencing microbial biomass and species diversity, thereby altering crucial biogeochemical functionalities. Here, we evaluated the ecological footprint of intensive cage aquaculture in Hainan, China, by tracking both microbial standing stocks and community network dynamics. While aquaculture exerted only a marginal effect on bacterial richness, it significantly restructured community composition (adonis, P < 0.01). Unexpectedly, it triggered nearly an 85% reduction in total…

Structure and immunological activity of QS-21 variant from Quillaja saponaria aerial biomass.

QS-21 is a triterpenoid saponin adjuvant component widely used in human vaccines, but its commercial supply is limited because it is sourced … Analytical profiling showed that QS-21-Rha represents more than 95% of QS-21 variants in the aerial biomass. High-resolution MS/MS and NMR spectroscopy confirmed that QS-21-Rha differs from QS-21 by the C3 terminal rhamnose substitution of xylose. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that QS-21-Rha elicits strong adaptive immune responses, notab …

Exploring archaeal resources for biomass-derived pentose utilization: pathways, extremozymes, and bioprocessing applications.

Currently, energy scarcity and the demand for sustainable carbon resources have increased interest in the conversion of biomass-derived sugars. Compared with hexoses, plant-derived pentoses, especially xylose and arabinose, are still inefficiently utilized by many microorganisms. This limitation reduces the conversion efficiency of biomass resources and highlights the need to explore new microbial pathways for pentose transformation. With the development of genomic sequencing, many previously unknown archaeal lineages have been identified from microbial dark matter, providing new opportunities…

Differential responses of fine root biomass to nitrogen deposition mediated by functional diversity.

INTRODUCTION: Fine root functional diversity can help explain and predict ecosystem functioning by integrating multiple fine root traits. However, because different functional diversity metrics emphasize distinct aspects of trait variation, their explanatory and predictive power may vary. Under ongoing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition, the responses of fine root functional diversity to N inputs and its contribution to community-level fine root biomass remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: We conducted coordinated field experiments in warm-temperate and subtropical forests, applying th…

A comprehensive approach to optimize lignocellulosic biomass processing for cost-effective biofuel production.

As the global population continues to grow exponentially, the demand for renewable energy sources is more critical than ever. Bioethanol, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels. This study focuses on optimizing bioethanol production using a supply chain model that incorporates corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and miscanthus as feedstocks. To minimize overall supply chain costs, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed, considering key cost factors such as feedstock procurement, bioethanol production, transportation, and f…

Assessing Biomass-Based Methanol Production via Electrified Gasification and Solar-Assisted CO2 Utilization.

This study investigates an electrified biomass-to-methanol synthesis pathway integrated with carbon utilization and renewable energy technologies. Two representative feedstock categories are assessed, namely, lignocellulosic biomass (pine) and agri-food wastes (spent coffee grounds, SCG). Process simulations are conducted in Aspen Plus for four configurations: a fully electrified base case powered by grid electricity, a solar-assisted variant of base case, a methanation-enhanced configuration of base case, and a hybrid system combining both solar electricity and methanation. An advanced proces…

Raw Gas Treatment and Conditioning for Methanol Production from Biomass and Waste Gasification.

Biomass and waste gasification offer a renewable pathway to methanol via syngas, yet the stringent impurity limits required by commercial methanol catalysts make syngas cleaning a critical step in the process. In this review, we first define the optimal syngas composition for economical methanol production based on literature data. It then establishes a systematic link between gasification conditions, raw gas (RG) composition, and downstream cleaning requirements. Unlike previous reviews that mainly focus on individual gas cleaning technologies, this work integrates impurity specifications req…

Reevaluating malaria severity metrics: insights from PfHRP2-derived biomass estimates in Ghanaian children.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria is primarily driven by parasite sequestration in deep vascular tissues. Standard diagnostic tools, such as peripheral parasitaemia determination, do not always reflect the total parasite burden. Plasma Plasmodium falciparum Histidine-Rich Protein 2 (PfHRP2) level has emerged as a potential biomarker for estimating total parasite biomass, which may better reflect disease severity than peripheral parasitaemia. However, it is still unclear how PfHRP2-estimated parasite …

Color-Modulated Spirulina Biomass Produced Under Heterotrophic Cultivation as a Sustainable Food Ingredient.

The intense green coloration of Spirulina biomass limits its incorporation into food products despite its high nutritional and bioactive value. This study evaluated the heterotrophic fed-batch cultivation of Spirulina sp. LEB 18 using glucose and sodium acetate, aiming to modulate biomass color and preserve a nutritionally relevant composition for its application as a food ingredient. After 10 days, all heterotrophic cultures exhibited attenuation of the green coloration, with total color differences greater than ΔE > 7 relative to the controls. The reduction in chlorophyll a was consistent wi…

Biomass-derived hydrochar and activated carbon in pharmaceutical pollution mitigation: a comprehensive overview.

Hydrochar, a carbonaceous material produced from biomass via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), has emerged as a sustainable adsorbent for mitigating pharmaceutical pollution in wastewater. Unlike pyrochar and hydrochar-derived activated carbon (HDAC), hydrochar is synthesized at lower temperatures (180-250 °C) using wet biomass, reducing energy consumption and enabling valorization of high-moisture waste without costly drying processes. Its rich oxygenated functional groups and tunable surface chemistry enhance the adsorption of polar contaminants through mechanisms such as hydrogen bonding, π…

Mucosal washes are useful for sampling intestinal mucus-associated microbiota despite low biomass.

Understanding the dynamic relationship between mucus-associated microbiota and host health is critical. However, studies predominantly using stool samples may not accurately represent these bacterial communities. Here, we investigated the mucus-associated microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract of mice and the terminal ileum of humans using different sample types: mucosal washes, brushes, scrapings, and intestinal contents in mice and biopsies, brushes and mucosal washes in humans. We used DNA quantification and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to evaluate the comparability of the information yie

Green biomass carbon points with efficient broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and widespread application.

With low toxicity and good biocompatibility, carbon dots (CDs) are widely used in the fields of biosensing and drug delivery. In recent years, they have demonstrated excellent antimicrobial properties, thus becoming another research hotspot in the antimicrobial field. However, most of the studies showed that CDs were effective in inhibiting Gram-positive bacteria but ineffective against Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, macadamia nutshell (MNS)-CDs were prepared from the hard shells of macadamia nuts by a one-step hydrothermal method, and their appearance, morphology, structural compositi
