Five interdisciplinary tensions and opportunities in neurodiversity research.

Improving our understanding of autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodevelopmental conditions requires collaborations between genetics, psychiatry, the social sciences and other fields of research.

Social influence and peer review: Why traditional peer review is no longer adapted, and how it should evolve.

There is growing unhappiness with the role of peer review in scientific assessment for grants and publications. While only a few critics would abandon peer review altogether, it is clear that scientific assessment has to evolve to keep serving scientists and the public. [Image: see text]

An experiment in privacy protection.

During investigation of toxic shock syndrome in New South Wales, record keepers were requested not to disclose the identities of subjects. Nevertheless, many record keepers disclosed these identities to the investigator. Covering letters giving extra stress to privacy protection had no special effect. The extent of disclosure appeared to be greater for record keepers who either are infrequently approached for research data or lack the facilities to prepare non-identified abstracts of personal information. These record keepers may benefit from education about their responsibilities.

Research priorities to improve classification of sleep-wake disorders.

PURPOSE: The objectives of this paper are to identify areas of data deficiencies most relevant to classification of sleep-wake disorders, present existing evidence that informs decisions, and suggest research goals to elucidate classification decisions. METHODS: A panel of experts in nosology, consisting of ICSD-3-TR task force members and work group chairs, identified key questions related to the classification of sleep disorders. The panel reviewed the literature based on systematic and targeted searches and developed research priorities to address these questions. RESULTS: Numerous unresolv

Research priorities for non-invasive therapies to improve hydrocephalus outcomes.

The Hydrocephalus Association organized two workshops with the support of the Rudi Schulte Research Institute and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center entitled "Developing Non-Invasive Hydrocephalus Therapies: Molecular and Cellular Targets", held September 27-29, 2023, in Dallas, TX, and "Developing Non-Invasive Hydrocephalus Therapies: Advancing Towards Clinical Trials", held April 12-13, 2024, in Cincinnati, OH. The goal of these workshops was to explore the frontiers of ongoing research for non-invasive therapies for the treatment of hydrocephalus across all etiologies and to impr

Psychedelic research - Going global.

"Psychedelic research - Going global" is a Special Issue of the Journal of Psychopharmacology that has been compiled and published as a tribute to Dr. Roland R Griffiths in recognition of his pioneering and pivotal contribution to the field of psychedelic research. Dr. Griffiths was Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and latterly, the founding director of the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. It is not an exaggeration to state that his discoveries, indefatigable support and advocacy laid the foundations

Anorexia of Aging: Metabolic Changes and Biomarker Discovery.

The age-associated decrease in appetite and food intake is referred to as "anorexia of aging". Older adults with anorexia show changes in the quantity/quality of energy supplied to the organism which eventually may cause a mismatch between ingested calories and physiological energy demands. Therefore, a state of malnutrition and impaired metabolism may ensue which renders older people more vulnerable to stressors and more prone to incur negative health outcomes. These latter cover a wide range of conditions including sarcopenia, low engagement in physical activity, and more severe consequences

Proceedings of the 2018 next-generation Gamma Knife research meeting.

In order to determine what areas of research are a clinical priority, a small group of young Gamma Knife investigators was invited to attend a workshop discussion at the 19th International Leksell Gamma Knife Society Meeting. Two areas of interest and the need for future radiosurgical research involving multiple institutions were identified by the young investigators working group: 1) the development of additional imaging sequences to guide the understanding, treatment, and outcome tracking of diseases such as tremor, radiation necrosis, and AVM; and 2) trials to clarify the role of hypofracti
