A new method based on polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is introduced to determine the polarization properties of human retinal vessel walls, in vivo. Amyloid deposition in two sublines of the A strain mouse, a reputedly reliable murine model of spontaneous amyloidosis, was reevaluated using combined green polarization birefringence after Congo red staining and a fibrillar ultrastructure for amyloid identification. Both sublines were found to be devoid of amyloid at an age when the A strain mouse had been reported to have a high incidence of papillonephritis, amyloidosis, and death. This finding indicates a need for reassessment of this and other traditional models of spontaneous amyloidosis.

A 65 year old man who underwent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) for triple vessel disease was found to have enlarged thymus. Biopsy of the thymic mass revealed localised amyloid deposits demonstrating strong apple green birefringence on polarised microscopy. Localized thymic amyloidosis is an extremely rare finding with present case as the seventh in the world and the first in India. Review of literature of thymic amyloidoma and its close differential sclerosing thymoma is hereby described.

A patient referred to us for recurrent chest wall gouty tophus, but who was determined to actually have a chylous cyst, is described herein. Chylous cysts of the neck or chest wall can be caused by thoracic duct injury. Chyle contains 4-40 gm/liter of lipids, mostly triglycerides, and these can form birefringent crystals upon drying, leading to a false diagnosis of gout.

Pulmonary and laryngeal manifestations of localized and organ-limited amyloidosis are sometimes seen, although pulmonary and laryngeotracheal amyloidosis are not always associated. Diagnosis can only be established histologically by the characteristic green birefringence in polarized light after Congo red staining and by immunohistochemical techniques. We describe the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented with hoarseness and an unproductive cough due to extensive amyloid deposits in both the upper and lower respiratory tract, immunohistochemically proven as the A lambda-type.
