The hospital records of 197 infants with the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) were reviewed and the families of 111 of them subsequently contacted to obtain a family history. After correcting for biasis of ascertainment, the incidence of RDS among the full sibs was found to be between 12 and 19% depending on whether the individuals diagnosed as "possible RDS" were counted as affected. We analyzed family structure, genetic patterns, epidemiology, and vitamin usage in a series of families with multiple cases of spina bifida (familial SB). Among 6,491 individuals ascertained in 72 families with familial SB, we identified 180 patients--85 males and 95 females. The number of collateral cases on the maternal side (49 of 3,588), analyzed by category of kinship, were significantly higher than those on the paternal side (16 of 2,903) (p = 0.0002). A comparison of the history of hypertension in the mother during pregnancy was made between a group of 136 mentally retarded children and a randomly selected control group of 122 children. The cases and the controls were 9 or 10 years of age at the time of the survey. A number of potentially confounding factors were controlled for in a multiple logistic model. Maternal hypertension during pregnancy was associated with a relative risk of mental retardation in the offspring of 6.1 with 95% confidence interval of 1.3-28.9.

In a matched retrospective study, 31 patients with hysterical neurosis were compared with 31 with depressive neurosis. There were no significant differences between the groups for siblings' position, medical work, brain disease, poor marriage, frigidity, or family history of psychiatric disorder. Significantly more of the hysterics had a preceding head injury and 29% had a past history of hysteria. By the time of the study 48% had been treated for depression.

Cases of spina bifida cystica, encephalocele, and anencephaly occurring over a 9-year period, 1965 to 1973, in New South Wales, Australia, were identified. Etiopathogenesis of the childhood autism syndrome of a non-process nature is discussed on the basis of a comparative study of 156 children aged from 3 to 16 years. In the etiological complex there is a prevalence of early exogenous-organic noxious factors, which is reflected in disturbances of mental divelopment, maturation of the system of hemispheric pair work. The data of follow-up studies and treatment confirm a conclusion about a residual-organic basis in the syndrome of childhood autism.

Factors predicting dominance and submissiveness between twins were analyzed in a longitudinal study of 234 twin pairs. Boys were found to be physically dominating, while the girls more often were psychically dominating and in the role of the spokesman.
