Molecular Interaction Mechanisms Between Lubricant-Infused Slippery Surfaces and Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine Adhesive and DOPA Moiety.

Lubricant-infused slippery surfaces have recently emerged as promising antifouling coatings, showing potential against proteins, cells, and marine mussels. However, a comprehensive understanding of the molecular binding behaviors and interaction strength of foulants to these surfaces is lacking. In this work, mussel-inspired chemistry based on catechol-containing chemicals including 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) and polydopamine (PDA) is employed to investigate the antifouling performance and repellence mechanisms of fluorinated-based slippery surface, and the correlated interaction mechan

Insights into the genetic diversity of Listeria monocytogenes from bivalves.

In the present study, 30 L. monocytogenes strains isolated from bivalves purchased in Poland were characterized by whole genome sequencing (WGS). The Core Genome Multilocus Sequence Typing (cgMLST) analysis revealed that the most frequent serogroups were IIa; sequence types (ST) were ST101, ST21 and ST325; and clonal complexe (CC) were CC101. Despite differential genotypic subtypes, most strains had similar antimicrobial resistance profiles. Most strains had genetic determinants of resistance to many groups of antibiotics; aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, lincosamides, macrolides, peptides,

Bioinformatic Characterization and Molecular Evolution of the Lucina pectinata Hemoglobins.

(1) Introduction: Lucina pectinata is a clam found in sulfide-rich mud environments that has three hemoglobins believed to be responsible for the transport of hydrogen sulfide (HbILp) and oxygen (HbIILp and HbIIILp) to chemoautotrophic endosymbionts. The physiological roles and evolution of these globins in sulfide-rich environments are not well understood. (2) Methods: We performed bioinformatic and phylogenetic analyses with 32 homologous mollusk globin sequences. Phylogenetics suggests a first gene duplication resulting in sulfide binding and oxygen binding genes. A more recent gene duplica

Characterization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Great Lakes Basin using dreissenid mussels.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Mussel Watch Program (MWP), conducts basin-wide monitoring and place-based assessments using dreissenid mussels as bioindicators of chemical contamination in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) body burden results for the period 2009-2018 were combined into one dataset from multiple MWP studies allowing for a robust characterization of PAH contamination. Patterns in PAH data were identified using descriptive statistics and machine learning techniques. R

Metal accumulation, growth and reproduction of razor clam Sinonovacula constricta transplanted in a multi-metal contaminated estuary.

In recent years, elevated metal discharges have seriously affected the health of many estuarine ecosystems in China. This study examined the influences of metal pollution on the growth and reproduction of razor clam, Sinonovacula constricta. An eight-month field experiment was conducted at two sites with different contamination levels in Jiulong River Estuary of Southern China. Concentrations of Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in seawater, suspended particles, surface sediments, and clams, as well as the clam growth and gonad condition were simultaneously determined on a monthly basis. Over

Widespread introgression in deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels.

BACKGROUND: The analysis of hybrid zones is crucial for gaining a mechanistic understanding of the process of speciation and the maintenance of species boundaries. Hybrid zones have been studied intensively in terrestrial and shallow-water ecosystems, but very little is known about their occurrence in deep-sea environments. Here we used diagnostic, single nucleotide polymorphisms in combination with one mitochondrial gene to re-examine prior hypotheses about a contact zone involving deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels, Bathymodiolus azoricus and B. puteoserpentis, living along the Mid-Atlantic

Natural populations of shipworm larvae are attracted to wood by waterborne chemical cues.

The life cycle of many sessile marine invertebrates includes a dispersive planktonic larval stage whose ability to find a suitable habitat in which to settle and transform into benthic adults is crucial to maximize fitness. To facilitate this process, invertebrate larvae commonly respond to habitat-related chemical cues to guide the search for an appropriate environment. Furthermore, small-scale hydrodynamic conditions affect dispersal of chemical cues, as well as swimming behavior of invertebrate larvae and encounter with potential habitats. Shipworms within the family Teredinidae are depende

Changes of polyamine pattern in digestive glands of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under exposure to cadmium.

Polyamines, in particular spermidine and spermine, have been identified as important antioxidants, highly induced by oxidative stress in a variety of organisms. However, little is known about changes in polyamine content of metal-stressed marine organisms. In the present study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were experimentally exposed to 25 μg/L Cd(2+) or 100 μg/L Cd(2+) for up to 15 days. Cd(2+) was progressively accumulated in mussel tissues, leading to a characteristic oxidative-stress status. Free putrescine (PUT) production was noticeably induced in response to Cd(2+) at day 5 and t

Effect of high hydrostatic pressure on murine norovirus in Manila clams.

AIMS: Eating raw or insufficiently cooked bivalve molluscs contaminated with human noroviruses (NVs) can result in acute cases of gastroenteritis in humans. Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) are particularly prone to exposure to NVs due to the brackish environment in which they are farmed which is known to be susceptible to human faecal contamination. High hydrostatic pressure processing (HHP) is a food treatment technique that has been shown to inactivate NV. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study we investigated the ability of HHP to inactivate murine norovirus (MNV-1), a recognised surrog

Re-emergence of Vibrio tubiashii in bivalve shellfish aquaculture: severity, environmental drivers, geographic extent and management.

During 2006 and 2007, we documented the re-emergence of severe episodes of vibriosis caused by Vibrio tubiashii in shellfish hatcheries on the west coast of North America. Lost larval and juvenile production included 3 previously undescribed hosts, Pacific (Crassostrea gigas) and Kumamoto (C. sikamea) oysters and geoduck clams Panope abrupta, with a 2007 decline in larval oyster production of approximately 59% in one hatchery. Losses of larval and juvenile bivalves were linked to V. tubiashii blooms in the coastal environment, which were associated with the apparent mixing of unusually warm su

Cytoprotective responses in the Mediterranean mussel exposed to Hg2+ and CH3Hg+.

This study aimed at elucidating whether organic and inorganic forms of mercury contamination differently affect HSP and MXR cytoprotective responses in Mytilus galloprovincialis. Changes of relative transcript levels were assessed in digestive glands of mussels exposed to 0.75 microM CH(3)Hg(+) or Hg(2+) for a maximum of 6 days. CH(3)Hg(+) inhibited MgHSP70 and induced MgHSC70 expression. As previously reported Hg(2+) stimulated MgHSP70 expression and induced MgHSC70 transcripts only after 6 days. The effect of CH(3)Hg(+) or Hg(2+) on the MXR system was investigated after partial sequencing of

A Mussel-Inspired Bioadhesive Patch to Selectively Kill Glioblastoma Cells.

Glioblastoma, the most prevalent and aggressive brain tumor, presents significant challenge due to its rapid proliferation, invasive nature, and resistance to conventional therapies. Current treatments, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, frequently lead to recurrence, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions. This work develops and evaluates bioinspired adhesive membranes designed as novel strategy to address glioblastoma recurrence post-surgery. Inspired by mussel adhesion, these membranes exhibit strong bioadhesion in wet environments and incorporate various phenoli

Environmental surveillance of enteric viruses in mussels reveals reduced contamination during the pandemic restriction period.

The present study investigated the occurrence of enteric viruses in mussels and evaluated differences in viral contamination between the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods. Mussel samples (n = 434) were collected from Slovenian production areas between November 2020 and October 2024, with a one-year interruption from May 2022 to May 2023 and were tested for viral RNA using RT-qPCR. A marked difference in viral detection was observed between the two study periods. Enteric viral RNA was detected in 22.4% of samples collected during the COVID-19 period, compared with 62.2% in the post-COVID-19 pe

Surface interception and transport of 14C-labeled polystyrene nanoplastics by benthic marine organisms.

The fate of nanoplastics (NPs) in marine environments may be strongly influenced by their interactions with benthic organisms, including surface retention and biological association. However, quantitative characterization of these processes remains challenging. In this study, 14C-labeled polystyrene NPs were synthesized to trace their interactions with the marine clam Ruditapes philippinarum and the fungus Schizophyllum commune, two benthic organisms with extensive particle-contact surfaces. In R. philippinarum, the gills acted as the primary filtration interface after 24 h of exposure, showin

Patagonian shellfish and hidden threats: unveiling the viral landscape and the first quantitative microbial risk assessment of Argentine bivalve mollusks.

Foodborne viral infections are a global public health concern, yet quantitative risk assessments (QMRA) for enteric viruses in bivalve mollusks are scarce, especially in South America. We conducted Argentina's first QMRA for five human enteric viruses- norovirus (NoV), rotavirus A (RVA), hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis E (HEV), and adenovirus (AdV) in bivalve mollusks. From August 2018-March 2023, 390 specimens from Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, were pooled (n = 113) and analyzed by real time PCR. A national survey revealed 3.6 % of servings were raw or minimally cooked. AdV showed the highest prevalence

Amino acid chemistry and post-translational modifications underlying marine adhesive proteins: Biochemical insights for designing underwater adhesives.

Underwater adhesion remains a complex challenge due to the interference of water with traditional bonding mechanisms. Marine organisms, such as mussels, sandcastle worms, and barnacles, have evolved specialized adhesive proteins that overcome these limitations through functional amino acid motifs. This review highlights how post-translationally derived amino acid motifs, such as 3,4-dihydroxylphenylalanine (DOPA) and phosphoserine, drive interfacial adhesion and the curing process through interfacial binding, metal coordination, and crosslinking. Alongside these, canonical amino acids, such as
