[Association between postpartum blood loss volume and maternal adverse clinical outcomes].

Objective: To investigate the relationship between postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) volume and the risk of adverse clinical outcomes in pregnant women. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of 41 494 deliveries at Peking University Third Hospital from 2012 to 2020. With PPH volume as the main exposure, the outcome indicators included: (1) Severe adverse outcomes: shock or embolism, abnormal coagulation function, abnormal liver function, and kidney injury; (2) General adverse outcomes: moderate to severe anemia, hypoalbuminemia, postpartum blood transfusion. Robust Poisson regression was em

Mucopolysaccharide polysulfate increases local skin blood volume through nitric oxide production.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharide polysulfate (MPS) is widely used as an active ingredient in topical preparations for the treatment of asteatosis and blood flow disorders. Although topical MPS products can increase cutaneous blood flow (CBF), the underlying mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to elucidate how MPS increases CBF. We investigated the association of nitric oxide (NO), a powerful mediator associated with increased local blood volume, with the blood flow-accelerating action of MPS in mice. In addition, we verified the effects of MPS on NO production in diffe…

Stressed Blood Volume in Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation: Implications for Transcatheter Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Although tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) has been suggested to improve outcomes in patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR), patients remain at substantial residual risk after the intervention. Total blood volume is divided between the unstressed volume, filling the vascular space, and stressed blood volume (SBV), generating intravascular pressure. SBV is an important mediator of hemodynamic derangements in heart failure and might pose an attractive adjunctive treatment target. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of SBV in patients wi…

Low Cerebral Blood Volume Identifies Poor Outcome in Stent Retriever Thrombectomy.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is an efficient treatment of acute stroke caused by large-vessel occlusion. We evaluated the factor … with appropriate statistical tests and binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Low cerebral blood volume Alberta stroke program early CT score (CBV-ASPECTS) was associated with poor clinical outcome (median 7 vs. 9, p = 0.01). Lower collateral score (CS) significantly predicted poor outcome in regression modelling with CS = 0 increasing the odds of poo …

Hepatic venous dysregulation contributes to blood volume pooling in cirrhotic rats.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In cirrhosis, despite increased total blood volume, the circulation behaves as if it were volume depleted, a phenomenon termed "decreased effective circulating volume". As the gut/liver veins are the major blood reservoir, this suggests hepatosplanchnic venous pooling. We therefore aimed to elucidate the vasoactive responses of the hepatic veins in cirrhosis. METHODS: Cirrhosis was induced by chronic bile duct ligation in rats. The in vivo responses of postsinusoidal venules and sinusoids to vasoactive drugs, 20% haemorrhage, and 20% mannitol (volume expansion) were exami…

Intradialytic blood volume monitoring in ambulatory hemodialysis patients: a randomized trial.

Complications related to inadequate volume management are common during hemodialysis. This trial tested the hypothesis that availability of an intradialytic blood volume monitoring (IBVM) device improves fluid removal, reducing morbidity. A six-center, randomized trial with 6 mo of intervention comparing IBVM using Crit-Line versus conventional clinical monitoring was conducted. The average rate of non-access-related hospitalizations was compared across treatment groups using Poisson regression. Mortality analysis used the Kaplan Meier method. A total of 227 patients were randomized to Crit-Li…

Blood volume monitoring to achieve target weight in pediatric hemodialysis patients.

Achieving dry weight during hemodialysis (HD) while minimizing symptoms is critical for optimizing patient outcome by preventing chronic fluid overload, hypertension, and cardiomyopathy. Dry weight changes frequently in children because of growth and development and waxing and waning of appetite. We have previously shown non-invasive hematocrit monitoring (NIVM) helps to decrease intradialytic symptoms, while still achieving target dry weights in children receiving chronic HD. In the current study, we prospectively evaluated an NIVM-guided ultrafiltration (UF) management algorithm to determine

Hematocrit, volume expander, temperature, and shear rate effects on blood viscosity.

UNLABELLED: Our goal was to determine and predict the effects of temperature, shear rate, hematocrit, and different volume expanders on blood viscosity in conditions mimicking deep hypothermia for cardiac operations. Blood was obtained from six healthy adults. Dilutions were prepared to hematocrits of 35%, 30%, 22.5%, and 15% using plasma, 0.9% NaCl, 5% human albumin, and 6% hydroxyethyl starch. Viscosity was measured over a range of shear rates (4.5-450 s(-1)) and temperature (0 degrees -37 degrees C). A parametric expression for predicting blood viscosity based on the study variables was dev

Pulmonary capillary blood volume in patients with probable pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: An increase in pulmonary capillary blood volume secondary to angiogenesis has been described in Kaposi's sarcoma. The value of the pulmonary capillary blood volume as an early marker of pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma was evaluated. METHODS: In a prospective study 45 HIV positive patients (nine asymptomatic for Kaposi's sarcoma, 29 with cutaneous or mucocutaneous Kaposi's sarcoma, and seven with pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma), underwent pulmonary function tests and determination of transfer capacity for carbon monoxide (TLCO) with its components, pulmonary capillary volume and membrane fa…

Uterine artery blood flow response to correction of amniotic fluid volume.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to investigate whether acute alterations of amniotic fluid volume affect uteroplacental perfusion. STUDY DESIGN: Three groups of patients of comparable gestational age were studied in a fetal medicine referral unit: (1) eight pregnancies with severe polyhydramnios because of twin-twin transfusion syndrome undergoing therapeutic amnioreduction, (2) seven with severe oligohydramnios undergoing diagnostic amnioinfusion, and (3) six control women having invasive procedures of similar duration without manipulation of amniotic fluid volume. Color Doppler imaging was used
