SARS-CoV-2 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Human Olfactory Pathophysiology.

Acute respiratory viruses (ARVs) are the leading cause of diseases in humans worldwide. High-risk individuals, including children and the elderly, could potentially develop severe illnesses that could result in hospitalization or death in the worst case. The most common ARVs are the Human respiratory syncytial virus, Human Metapneumovirus, Human Parainfluenza Virus, rhinovirus, coronaviruses (including SARS and MERS CoV), adenoviruses, Human Bocavirus, enterovirus (-D68 and 71), and influenza viruses. The olfactory deficits due to ARV infection are a common symptom among patients. This review …

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract: old viruses, new viruses, and the role of diagnosis.

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract cause an enormous disease burden in children, and the role of respiratory viruses in serious … the role of rhinoviruses and some of the newly described viruses, including human coronaviruses and bocavirus, is harder to determine. Better diagnostic tests that establish the cause of LRTIs in children have the potential to both reduce overall antibiotic use and to improve the targeted use of antibiotics. In addition, rapid identification of viral infect …

Hairpin Transfer-Independent Parvovirus DNA Replication Produces Infectious Virus.

Parvoviruses package a linear single-stranded DNA genome with hairpin structures at both ends. It has been thought that terminal hairpin sequences are indispensable for viral DNA replication. Here, we provide evidence that the hairpin-deleted duplex genomes of human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) replicate in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells. We propose an alternative model for HBoV1 DNA replication in which the leading strand can initiate strand displacement without hairpin transfer. The transfection of the HBoV1 duplex genomes that retain a minimal replication origin at the right end (OriR) bu…

Clinical and Virological Characteristics of Early and Moderate Preterm Infants Readmitted With Viral Respiratory Infections.

BACKGROUND: Rehospitalization of children born prematurely (referred to as preterm children) caused by severe respiratory infections is comm … ified. The most frequent viruses were respiratory syncytial virus (29%), rhinovirus (25%) and human bocavirus (13%). Human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza virus were significantly more frequent in preterm than in term children (P < 0.001 and P = 0.017, respectively). Early preterm (EPT) infants admitted with bronchiolitis presented more hypoxia (P = 0.08) …

Detection and phylogenetic analysis of porcine bocaviruses carried by murine rodents and house shrews in China.

Bocaparvovirus infections of humans and both wild and domestic animals have been widely reported around the world. In this study, we detected and genetically characterized porcine bocavirus (PBoV) carried by murine rodents (Rattus norvegicus, Rattus tanezumi, and Rattus losea) and house shrews (Suncus murinus) in China. Between May 2015 and May 2017, 496 murine rodents and 23 house shrews were captured in four Chinese provinces. Nested polymerase chain reaction was used to investigate the prevalence of PBoV in throat swab, faecal and serum samples. A total of 7.5% (39/519) throat swab samples,…

Showing a statistically significant correlation, all OME cases were positive for human bocavirus (HBoV, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial biofilms might contribute to the damage of respiratory epithelium and recurring acute infections resulting in RAOM. Viruses Associated with Acute Conjunctivitis in Vanuatu.

The first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuat … galovirus, varicella zoster virus, and human herpes 7 virus). Rhinovirus C, Epstein-Barr virus, and bocavirus were also detected. In summary, the etiology for viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu appears broad. Unbiased testing may be useful for disease surveillance.

Mixed viral infections causing acute gastroenteritis in children in a waterborne outbreak.

We examined stool specimens for viral pathogens from 50 children referred to hospital due to acute gastroenteritis (AGE) resulting from consuming drinking water contaminated with sewage in a Finnish community using PCR methods. Rotavirus was detected in 33 (66%), human calicivirus in 31 (62%), and both in 40% of cases. Of the caliciviruses, 20/31 (65%) were noroviruses and 11 (35%) sapoviruses. Furthermore, Aichi virus was detected in 25 (50%), adenovirus in six (12%) and bocavirus in four (8%) cases. Campylobacter jejuni was present in 20 (61%) and Salmonella in four (12%) of the 33 stools cu…

Simultaneous detection of seven enteric viruses associated with acute gastroenteritis by a multiplexed Luminex-based assay.

Rapid and broad diagnostic methods are needed for the identification of viral agents of gastroenteritis. In this study, we used Luminex xMAP technology to develop a multiplexed assay for the simultaneous identification of major enteric viral pathogens, including rotavirus A (RVA), noroviruses (NoVs) (including genogroups GI and GII), sapoviruses (SaV), human astrovirus (HAstV), enteric adenoviruses (EAds), and human bocavirus 2 (HBoV2). The analytical sensitivity allowed detection of 10(3) (EAds, HBoV2, and RVA) and 10(4) (NoV GI and GII, SaV, and HAstV) copies per reaction mixture. Compared t…

The SIRT1-Mediated p53 Deacetylation Pathway Modulates Apoptosis and Promotes Viral Replication in MVC-Infected Cells.

Minute virus of canines (MVC) is an autonomous canine parvovirus that causes severe pathological outcomes, including embryo mortality, spontaneous abortion, and congenital malformations in neonatal puppies. Although MVC infection has been shown to induce host cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, the underlying regulatory mechanisms that coordinate cell proliferation and control apoptotic responses during viral replication remain poorly understood. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is an NAD+-dependent deacetylase that plays a critical role in regulating cell cycle progression, DNA damage responses, and apoptosis.

A non-enteric adenovirus A12 gastroenteritis outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A gastroenteritis outbreak that occurred in 2013 in a low-income community in Rio de Janeiro was investigated for the presence of enteric viruses, including species A rotavirus (RVA), norovirus (NoV), astrovirus (HAstV), bocavirus (HBoV), aichivirus (AiV), and adenovirus (HAdV). Feline bocaparvovirus in domestic cats with gastrointestinal disease.

Feline bocaparvoviruses (FeBoVs) have been detected in association with gastrointestinal disease in domestic cats. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic characteristics of FeBoVs in Italy by screening 126 rectal swabs from cats with acute gastroenteritis, collected between 2023 and 2025. The samples were analyzed using a pan-bocaparvovirus consensus PCR and novel type-specific quantitative assays for FeBoV-1, -2, and -3. The overall prevalence of FeBoV DNA was 22.2% (28/126). FeBoV-1 was the most frequently detected type (19.0%), followed by FeBoV-2 (4.8%) and FeBoV-3 (1.6%). Co-i
