A prospective test of the dual-pathway model of bulimic pathology: mediating effects of dieting and negative affect.

Because there have been few longitudinal investigations of integrative etiological theories of bulimia nervosa, this study prospectively tested the dual-pathway model using random regression growth curve models and data from a 3-wave community sample of adolescent girls (N = 231). Initial pressure to be thin and thin-ideal internalization predicted subsequent growth in body dissatisfaction, initial body dissatisfaction predicted growth in dieting and negative affect, and initial dieting and negative affect predicted growth in bulimic symptoms. There was prospective evidence for most of the hyp

Predictors of body appearance cognitive distraction during sexual activity in men and women.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive distraction is a core concept in cognitive models of sexual dysfunction. Body appearance cognitive distraction during sexual activity (BACDSA) has been mainly studied among female college samples. However, the relative contribution of different indicators of body dissatisfaction among men and women from community samples, including the contribution of relationship variables to BACDSA, has yet to be examined. AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which aspects of body dissatisfaction and relationship variables predict BACDSA. METHODS: A total of 669 c

Sexual life after weight loss surgery.

BACKGROUND: Previous research revealed a relationship between higher body mass index (BMI) and lower sexual functioning. However, the role of psychosocial variables, such as body image, in this relationship has been understudied. OBJECTIVE: To assess sexual life before and after weight loss surgery (WLS) and examine the role of body image and BMI in these changes. SETTING: WLS center at a major urban community hospital. METHODS: 327 participants (275 women and 52 men) who underwent either laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (n = 225) or laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (n = 10

Broad and Narrow Transdiagnostic Risk Factors in Eating Disorders: A Preliminary Study on an Italian Clinical Sample.

Eating disorders are multifaceted psychopathologies and the transdiagnostic approach is currently considered a useful framework to understand their complexity. This preliminary study aimed to investigate both broad (i.e., intolerance of uncertainty and emotion dysregulation) and narrow (i.e., extreme body dissatisfaction) transdiagnostic risk factors underlying eating disorders. 50 Italian female patients seeking treatment for an eating disorder were involved (Mage = 31.6 years ± 12.8, 18-65). They completed self-report measures assessing emotion regulation difficulties, intolerance of uncerta

A longitudinal study of body change strategies of fitness center attendees.

This study evaluated predictors of strategies to change weight and muscles among men and women who attend fitness centers. A questionnaire was completed by 107 men (mean age=39.17, SD=13.14), and 151 women (mean age=35.31, SD=11.38) who regularly attended fitness centers at two points in time, one year apart. The only unique predictor of body change strategies over time for men was body dissatisfaction predicting drive for thinness; for women, body dissatisfaction predicted strategies to lose weight, drive for thinness, use of food supplements to lose weight and levels of bulimia. Exploratory graph analysis (EGA) of the dimensional structure of the eating disorder examination-questionnaire (EDE-Q) in women with eating disorders.

This study examined the dimensional structure of the German Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) in clinical groups of women with Anorexia Nervosa (AN; N = 821), Bulimia Nervosa (BN; N = 573), and Binge-Eating Disorder (BED; N = 359) using Exploratory Graph Analyses (EGA). The EGA yielded a 12-item-four-dimension structure for the AN group (subscales "Restraint", "Body Dissatisfaction", "Preoccupation", "Importance"), a 20-item-five-dimension structure for the BN group (subscales "Restraint", "Body Dissatisfaction", "Eating Concern", "Preoccupation", "Importance"), and a 17-item-f

Dissonance and healthy weight eating disorder prevention programs: long-term effects from a randomized efficacy trial.

Adolescent girls with body dissatisfaction (N = 481, SD = 1.4) were randomized to a dissonance-based thin-ideal internalization reduction program, healthy weight control program, expressive writing control condition, or assessment-only control condition. Dissonance participants showed significantly greater decreases in thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and psychosocial impairment and lower risk for eating pathology onset through 2- to 3-year follow-up than did assessment-only controls. Dissonance participants showed greater decreases i

The impact of weight and negative body image on the body schema in undergraduate women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alterations of the sensory-motor body schema question the origins of such distortions. For example, in anorexia nervosa where patients think they are broader than they really are (body image) but act as if it was really the case (body schema). To date, the results of studies about what hinders the updating of the body schema so much (weight, body image) have been contradictory. METHODS: We therefore conducted two studies that aimed to assess the impact of weight and body image problems on body schema in 92 young women without anorexia nervosa. For this purpose, we u

The prediction of relapse in bulimia nervosa.

Thirty-nine women successfully treated for bulimia nervosa were followed up six months after the conclusion of treatment and classified as maintaining recovery or partially or completely relapsed. Clinical and psychometric variables including body image disturbance and dissatisfaction were entered into regression equations to identify predictors of relapse. Dissatisfaction with body image at the end of treatment was the most potent predictor of relapse. The finding is interpreted as underscoring the importance of addressing issues of body image in therapy if treatment gains are to be maintaine

The body image disturbance questionnaire-scoliosis better correlates to quality of life measurements than the spinal assessment questionnaire in pediatric idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) patients can have body dissatisfaction which can affect their perception of health. Two body image measures, the Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (SAQ) and the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire-Scoliosis (BIDQ-S), have been used in pediatric IS with variable correlation to the SRS-22r and radiographs, but have not been compared to each other. As patient reported outcomes (PROs) continue to be highlighted in large database studies and national hospital ranking system scoring, we should narrow use to the best and most efficient. We aim to determine which of t

Longer-term consequences of increased body checking in women at risk for eating disorders-a naturalistic experimental online study.

Body checking is a common behavior in both the general population and individuals with body image disturbances. Cognitive-behavioral theories postulate that body checking reduces negative emotions in the short term, but over time contributes to the development and maintenance of eating disorder pathology. So far, few experimental studies have assessed these longer-term consequences, mostly under laboratory conditions, yielding inconsistent findings, and without considering individual vulnerability and specific personality traits. In a naturalistic experimental cross-over design, women with low

A personalized approach-avoidance modification intervention to reduce negative body image. A placebo-controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Drive for thinness is considered an important factor in the onset and maintenance of negative body image and can be conceptualized as a motivational approach tendency towards thin bodies. The goal of this study was to test whether training thinness-related approach-avoidance tendencies is effective in improving body satisfaction using a personalized training with individuals' own body pictures. METHODS: Undergraduate women scoring high on drive for thinness (N = 104) were randomly assigned to an experimental, placebo or no training control condition. The experimenta

Investigating Body Image Disturbance in Anorexia Nervosa Using Novel Biometric Figure Rating Scales: A Pilot Study.

This study uses novel biometric figure rating scales (FRS) spanning body mass index (BMI) 13.8 to 32.2 kg/m2 and BMI 18 to 42 kg/m2 . The aims of the study were (i) to compare FRS body weight dissatisfaction and perceptual distortion of women with anorexia nervosa (AN) to a community sample; (ii) how FRS parameters are associated with questionnaire body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms and appearance comparison habits; and (iii) whether the weight spectrum of the FRS matters. Women with AN (n = 24) and a community sample of women (n = 104) selected their current and ideal body on the

A phenomenological investigation of overvalued ideas and delusions in clinical and subclinical anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by distorted cognitions about body weight and shape; but little is known about the phenomenological characteristics of these beliefs. In this study, multidimensional and insight-based measurements were used to compare beliefs about body weight and shape in AN to body image dissatisfaction in the general population, and delusional beliefs in schizophrenia. Twenty participants with clinical and sub-clinical AN, 27 participants with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, and 23 healthy controls completed the Brown Assessment of Belief

Association between childhood trauma and affective lability among adolescents: A moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Affective lability is an important feature of psychopathology. However, there is limited relevant research involving adolescents. To fill this research gap, the present study assessed the relationship between childhood trauma and affective lability among adolescents using a moderated mediation model. METHODS: A total of 3738 students were recruited from four high schools in Shenzhen, China, between September and December 2019. The participants completed self-reported questionnaires measuring childhood trauma, affective lability, body image dissatisfaction, and the experience of be

Depression and body image among women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Common features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including hyperandrogenism, ovarian dysfunction and obesity, can be highly distressing. We compared 40 women with PCOS to women with infertility but not PCOS, and to women with neither PCOS nor infertility, on measures of depression and body image. Women with PCOS reported higher depression scores and greater body dissatisfaction (p < .001) than comparison group women. Body image was strongly associated with depression overall, even after controlling body mass. Among women with PCOS, body dissatisfaction measures and education explained 66 p

Body image phenomenology in reports of psychedelic and meditative experiences: main themes and associations with body attitudes.

Psychedelics and meditation can facilitate transformative experiences with acute changes in sensory processing and self-perception, but research about their relation to narrative and affective-attitudinal body image remains limited. We examined body image themes in psychedelic and meditative experience narratives, compared these between experience types, and examined their associations with body attitudes. We qualitatively analyzed retrospective reports of participants' most personally meaningful psychedelic and meditation experiences (psychedelics: N = 90; meditation: N = 48). Using regressio
