Cow's milk as a post-exercise recovery drink: implications for performance and health.

Post-exercise recovery is a multi-facetted process that will vary depending on the nature of the exercise, the time between exercise sessions and the goals of the exerciser. From a nutritional perspective, the main considerations are: (1) optimisation of muscle protein turnover; (2) glycogen resynthesis; (3) rehydration; (4) management of muscle soreness; (5) appropriate management of energy balance. Milk is approximately isotonic (osmolality of 280-290 mosmol/kg), and the mixture of high quality protein, carbohydrate, water and micronutrients (particularly sodium) make it uniquely suitable as

Paricalcitol dosing according to body weight or severity of hyperparathyroidism: a double-blind, multicenter, randomized study.

Vitamin D therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis therapy has relied on patient dry weight to determine the initial dose of medication. Obtaining a patient's dry weight can be difficult, and no correlation has been established between a patient's body weight and severity of secondary hyperparathyroidism. We conducted a double-blind, double-dummy, randomized, 12-week, multicenter trial to compare the incidence of hypercalcemia (single occurrence) between two dosing regimens: one regimen based on baseline intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH; PTH/80) level, and the o

Regulation of body weight and carcass composition by sibutramine in rats.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the effectiveness of sibutramine to modulate food intake and body composition in rats with two levels of adiposity imposed by the duration of their maintenance on a moderate-fat diet. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Male Sprague--Dawley rats were fed a 32% fat diet from weaning until 2 or 4 months of age, at which point, body fat was either 15% or 25%, respectively, as measured by DXA. Sibutramine (0.6 or 2 mg/kg, orally) was then given daily for 2 weeks. RESULTS: Food intake and body weight decreased acutely in a dose-related manner in both groups with sibutramine tr

Relative differences in resting-state brain connectivity associated with long term intensive lifestyle intervention.

A number of studies have reported that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with alterations in resting-state activity and connectivity in the brain. There is also evidence that interventions involving physical activity and weight loss may affect brain functional connectivity. In this study, we examined the effects of nearly 10 years of an intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI), designed to induce and sustain weight loss through lower caloric intake and increased physical activity, on resting-state networks in adults with T2DM. We performed a cross-sectional comparison of global and l

Associations between weight suppression and dimensions of eating disorder psychopathology in a multisite sample.

Evidence suggests that weight suppression, the difference between an individual's highest historical body weight and current body weight, may play a role in the etiology and/or maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), and may also impact ED treatment. However, there are limited findings regarding the association between weight suppression and dimensions of ED psychopathology, particularly in multi-diagnostic ED samples. Participants were 1748 adults (94% female) from five sites with a variety of DSM-IV ED diagnoses who completed the Eating Disorder Questionnaire, a self-report measure of various

Effects of cow efficiency phenotype on performance, energy partitioning, ultrasound carcass composition, and gas exchange during gestation and lactation.

This study investigated the effects of residual feed intake (RFI) and residual net energy recovered (RNE) classifications on the performance, carcass composition, milk production, and gas exchange of crossbred Angus beef cows consuming an unprocessed forage diet during gestation and lactation. Thirty-six multiparous fall-calving cows were monitored for feed intake, body weight, body condition, ultrasound-based carcass traits, milk yield and quality, carbon dioxide and methane emissions, and oxygen consumption using automated feeding and gas measurement systems. Cows were retrospectively classi

Use of total parenteral nutrition in pediatric bone marrow transplantation.

To evaluate the extent of the nutritional stress of pediatric bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and to evaluate the use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), 35 consecutive pediatric patients who received BMT were studied retrospectively. Voluntary cessation of oral nutrition in almost all patients was observed, and significant decreases of serum albumin levels were seen after BMT. In 85% of these patients, TPN was necessary in response to severe wasting and fasting. No deaths were related to indwelling central venous catheters during the period of 2968 catheter-use days in these severely myelo

Examining Weight Suppression, Leptin Levels, Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Response, and Reward-Related Constructs in Severity and Maintenance of Bulimic Syndromes: Protocol and Sample Characteristics for a Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa and related syndromes (BN-S) characterized by binge eating vary considerably in illness severity and course. Using the Research Domain Criteria framework of the National Institute of Mental Health, we developed a model positing that the same set of physiological consequences of weight suppression (WS; defined as the difference between the highest and current adult body weight) contribute to binge-eating severity and maintenance by (1) increasing the drive or motivation to consume food (reward valuation effort [RVE]) and (2) decreasing the ability for food consumptio

Unhealthy Weight Management Practices and Non-medical Use of Prescription Drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. With approximately one in five high school students engaging in NMUPD, it is important to understand behavioral correlates. METHODS: Data were combined from the 2011 and 2013 cycles of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey. After restricting the analytic sample to students who reported a weight loss goal of either staying the same weight or losing weight, logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% CIs fo

Folacin deficiency and requirement in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciuresus).

Acute folacin deficiency was studied in eight young squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Half of the animals were fed a semipurified deficient diet (no added folic acid) and half were fed a control diet (0.84 mg of added folic acid per kilogram of dry diet). Monkeys fed the deficient diet lost weight and suffered from diarrhea and dehydration leading to the death of one of the animals after 6 weeks. Folacin deficiency also was studied in six older animals fed diets containing varying levels of added folic acid. Monkeys fed diets containing 0.14 or 0.27 mg of added folic acid per kilogram of dr

Eating Disorder Symptoms in Australian Actors and Performing Artists.

AIMS: Anecdotal evidence suggests that actors and other performing artists are under great pressure to conform to idealized appearances and body types. The pursuit of such appearances may trigger eating disorder symptoms, such as unhealthy attitudes towards body weight and shape. Thus far, there has been no dedicated empirical study of the prevalence of such problems in Australian actors and performing artists specifically. Therefore, this study sought to examine eating disorder symptomatology in Australian actors and performing artists. METHODS: An online survey was distributed to the Equity
