The otodystrophies: diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

The imaging evaluation of hearing loss is usually focused on inflammatory entities, especially chronic otitis/ cholesteatoma and cerebellopontine angles lesions, particularly acoustic tumors. This discussion concerns several developmental and acquired entities. The developmental entities referred to as the otodystrophies include otosclerosis, Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia, and osteogenisis imperfecta. Otosyphilis and postradiation temporal bone changes are also included because of the overlapping imaging appearances.

From Development, Disease, and Decline: A Review of What Defines an Osteoclast Progenitor.

Our understanding of the different developmental origins of osteoclast progenitors and their respective roles during homeostatic bone remodeling at different skeletal sites as well as their roles within bone regeneration and degenerative conditions is evolving. In this narrative review article, we summarize what is known about the developmental origins, anatomical sources, and markers of osteoclast progenitors. We touch on how osteoclast progenitors vary during different disease contexts, including periodontitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. In addition, we also characterize osteo

[Differential diagnosis of pathological and anatomical variations of growth of the skull bones].

In radiologically demonstrated diseases of the skull bones, differential diagnosis has to be made with such anatomical developmental variations as pacchionian depressions, venous lacunae, emissaria, and macrocellular structure of the parietal tuber. Anatomical developmental variations were mistaken for other pathological processes in 47 (33.1%) of 130 patients. The principal features distinguishing anatomical developmental variations from defects of other genesis are communication with the venous network, typical localization, a great number of foci of diminished density as a rule, homogeneity

Infantile Tibia Vara (Blount Disease) with Iatrogenic Changes Causing Residual Tibial Deformities.

Treatment of infantile tibia vara or Blount disease (ITV/BD) in patients < 3 years old and Langenskiold stages I-III consists of orthosis and, in relapsing cases, proximal tibial osteotomy and/or proximal tibial guided growth laterally with a tension band plate. Our aim was to evaluate the results of treatments in a consecutive group. After Institutional Review Board approval, data from 2002 to 2018 were collected. Thirty-nine knees (average age 22.4 months) with ITV/BD were treated with orthoses, and 10 knees failed. Six knees showed hyperintense T2-weighted signal in the medial proximal tibi

Kenny-Caffe syndrome.

Kenny-Caffe Syndrome is rarely found. From 1966-1993 only 22 cases were reported worldwide. The author presented a case of Kenny-Caffe Syndrome who showed typical findings, i.e. short stature, small slender long bones with medullary stenosis, thickened cortex of the long bones, hypocalcemia with tetany at 1 month of age, hyperphosphatemia, hyperopia of both eyes and normal IQ. A review of the literature summarizing the clinical and laboratory findings of this syndrome is also presented.

Unusual presentation of monostatic fibrous dysplasia in zygoma.

Fibrous dysplasia is a nonneoplastic, developmental disease of the bone that begins in childhood with obscure etiology. Clinically, it is presented as a continuously growing, painless mass at late childhood. Maxilla and mandible are mostly involved in facial skeleton. Involvement of the zygomatic bone is rare. Fibrous dysplasia of the zygomatic bone may cause orbital dystopia, diplopia, proptosis, loss of visual acuity, swelling, mass formation, or facial asymmetry. We present 1 case of fibrous dysplasia with isolated zygomatic bone involvement.

Radiographic features of the hand in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH): comparison with normal subjects and acromegalic patients.

Radiographs of the hands of 25 men and 9 women with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) were compared with age- and sex-matched controls and acromegalic patients. Characteristics of DISH included broadening and "arrowheading" of the distal phalangeal tufts, enlarged sesamoid bones, increased cortical width of tubular bones, prominent enthesopathy in the proximal phalanges, exostoses (particularly at the metacarpophalangeal heads), and new bone in the joint capsule. There was no consistent change in soft-tissue measurements or cartilage width between DISH and control patients. Acrom

Ascorbic acid deficiency: a case report.

Scurvy is well known since ancient times, but it is rarely seen in the developed world today owing to the discovery of its link to the dietary deficiency of ascorbic acid. It is very uncommon in the pediatric population, and is usually seen in children with severely restricted diet attributable to psychiatric or developmental disturbances. The condition presents itself by the formation of perifollicular petechiae and bruising, gingival inflammation and bleeding, and, in children, bone disease. We report a case of scurvy in a 10-year-old developmentally delayed boy who had a diet markedly defic

Familial congenital bowing with short thick bones and metaphyseal changes, a distinct entity. Report of the clinical and radiological findings in two siblings.

The authors describe two siblings, a male and a female, with disproportionate short stature, rhizomelic-mesomelic shortening of the limb bones, marked bowing of the femora, moderate bowing of the humeri, radii and ulnae, straight tibiae and fibulae, normal hands, flared cupped metaphyses of the tibiae, ulnae, radii and ribs, and narrow chest. There was some improvement of the bone changes with advancing age. These two patients are similar to five other cases from the literature and strongly support Hall and Spranger's view that this pseudocampomelic condition most likely represents a distinct

Osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia.

A new sclerosing bone disease in two Japanese siblings born to first-degree cousin parents is reported. Clinically the disease is characterized by early developmental delay, hypotonia and later spastic paraplegia. The unique radiographic changes consist of peripheral osteosclerosis affecting predominantly metaphyses of the long bones and to a lesser degree ends of the ribs and clavicles, iliac crests, acetabulae, ischio-pubic synchondroses and vertebrae. The epiphyses are sclerotic in early life. The round bones, short tubular bones and the skull are little affected. The shafts of the tubular
