Patients with borderline personality disorder have high rates of comorbid mood, anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders. The longitudinal studies conducted on borderline patients over 10 years of prospective follow-up suggest that patients with borderline personality disorder experienced declining rates of Axis I disorders over time, but the rates of these disorders remained high compared with those with other personality disorders. In addition, patients whose borderline personality disorder remitted over time experienced a substantial decline in all comorbid Axis I disorders, but those w

IMPORTANCE: Although borderline personality disorder (BPD)-one of the most common, burdensome, and costly psychiatric conditions-is characterized by repeated interpersonal conflict and instable relationships, the neurobiological mechanism of social interactive deficits remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: To apply recent advancements in the investigation of 2-person human social interaction to investigate interaction difficulties among people with BPD.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-brain information flow in BPD was examined from May 25, 2012, to December 4, 2015, in pairs of part

BACKGROUND: Researchers have found elevated rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients. They have also implicated the role of CSA later in BPD. However, there has been a scarcity of studies regarding this in Indian population.
OBJECTIVES: To profile the occurrence of CSA and its parameters in BPD patients and to document symptomatology of BPD associated with CSA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive patients with BPD were administered with a two-staged semi-structured interview by different interviewers with the first stage for collecting

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic condition with a strong impact on patients' affective, cognitive and social functioning. Neuroimaging techniques offer invaluable tools to understand the biological substrate of the disease. We aimed to investigate gray matter alterations over the whole cortex in a group of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Magnetic resonance-based cortical pattern matching was used to assess cortical gray matter density (GMD) in 26 BPD patients and in their age- and sex-matched HC (age: 38

This paper presents an analysis of dream-reality confusion (DRC) in relation to the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD), based on research findings and theoretical considerations. It is hypothesized that people with BPD are more likely to experience DRC compared to people in non-clinical population. Several variables related to this hypothesis were identified through a theoretical analysis of the scientific literature. Sleep disturbances: problems with sleep are found in 15-95.5% of people with BPD (Hafizi, 2013), and unstable sleep and wake cycles, which occur in BPD (Fle

The present study focuses on selected symptom criteria to distinguish between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and borderline personality disorder (BPD). A sample of n = 158 subjects was examined, consisting of BPD patients (n = 37), ADHD patients (n = 58), comorbid BPD/ADHD patients (n = 19), a clinical group of patients fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of a depressive disorder (DEP; n = 22) and a non-clinical control group (KG; n = 22). Selected symptom criteria were investigated by using the German scales "Skala zur Erfassung der Impulsivität und emotionalen Dysre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article explores recent research in the field of childhood exposure to trauma and the development of borderline personality disorder in adolescence.
RECENT FINDINGS: Adolescence is a critical period of development. Exposure to trauma, specifically sexual abuse, prior to and during puberty has specific implications for personality development and heightens risk for borderline personality disorder. Elevated symptom levels in adolescence are likely to decline across adulthood, but social and vocational impairments remain. Impulsivity, difficulties in emotion regulation, a

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) share numerous features, including dysphoric affect, irritability, suicidality, and a heightened sensitivity to perceived interpersonal rejection. However, these disorders are associated with divergent profiles of reactivity to rejection: Individuals with MDD are more likely to respond with withdrawal and isolation, and those with BPD appear to respond with increased approach behaviors and greater hostility. Potential mechanisms underlying these divergent patterns of response have not been elaborated. The goal of the pre

The current study investigated the short-term effects of mindful and ruminative forms of self-focused attention on a behavioral measure of distress tolerance in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who had completed an angry mood induction. Participants included 40 individuals who met criteria for BPD and were currently involved in mental health treatment. Each completed an individual 1-hr session. Following an angry mood induction, each participant was randomly assigned to engage in ruminative or mindful self-focus for several minutes. All participants then completed the com

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation and a high prevalence of traumatic stress. Recent estimates suggest that 2-6% of non-clinical populations suffer from BPD. Despite this relevance, this is the first study considering the neural mechanisms underlying trauma-history and temporal features of cognitive reappraisal in non-clinical BPD patients using script-driven stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined subjective ratings of negative emotional experience and brain activity following up- and down-regulation of emotional

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to explore various facets of sexual behaviour in those with borderline personality disorder (BPD).
METHOD: Using a cross-sectional approach and a sample of convenience, we surveyed 126 female psychiatric inpatients regarding their sexual histories as well as BPD symptoms on two self-report measures.
RESULTS: Compared to participants who were not positive on both measures of BPD (the nonBPD group; n = 52), those who were positive on both measures (the BPD group; n = 70) reported a greater number of sexual partners, and were more likely to repo

Previous studies have identified neuropsychological deficits in individuals with antisocial personality disorder and/or psychopathy. Few studies have examined neuropsychological functioning in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and no studies have yet investigated cognitive and emotional function in male prisoners with BPD. In this study, we compared the risky decision-making of 17 participants with a history of serious violent or sexual offenses and a diagnosis of DSM-IV BPD with that of 17 participants with similar offending histories but personality disorders other than

This paper takes a deconstructive approach to the historical, clinical, and social context of the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This is undertaken by providing an overview of pertinent literature, an examination of the diagnostic criteria, a discussion of the development of the shame affect, a discussion of women's narratives and a reinterpretation of the symptoms of BPD as an overwhelming shame response. An argument is developed that shame is an integral but neglected feature in the experiences of mental distress that are characteristic of BPD. This discussion is support

The goal of the current study was to examine whether individuals with comorbid Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) exhibit greater severity of depressive symptoms than (1) individuals with MDD without BPD and (2) individuals with neither MDD nor BPD. One hundred and forty-one individuals participated in a semi-structured clinical interview assessing MDD and BPD. They also completed measures assessing depressive symptoms, depressogenic attributional style, hopelessness, self-esteem, rumination, and dysfunctional attitudes. In line with hypotheses, individua

This study evaluated the relationship between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). Forty-three males with BPD were compared with 49 age- and sex-matched controls with other psychiatric diagnoses. The occurrence of TBI was identified by chart review. Head injury was identified in 42% of patients meeting criteria for BPD but in only 4% of controls (p < .001). All patients but one had sustained a TBI prior to the diagnosis of BPD. The prevalence of TBI is higher in subjects with BPD than in controls. Since TBI occurred prior to the full expression of the BPD cli

This study aimed to identify patient factors that predict early dropout from psychodynamic psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD). Thirty-six BPD patients began an open-ended course of twice per week psychodynamic psychotherapy that was defined in a treatment manual and supervised. Dropout rates were 31% and 36% at 3 and 6 months of therapy, respectively. Survival analysis techniques demonstrated that age and hostility ratings predicted early dropout, with continuers more likely to be older and expressing lower levels of hostility than dropouts. Many variables hypothesized to
