[Adjuvant pharmacologic therapy after fine needle aspiration of breast cysts in women].

OBJECTIVES: The most common and generally accepted methods of breast cysts treatment are fine needle aspiration or surgical excision. None of these methods allow to avoid or decrease number of recurrences. Regarding hormonal disturbances as a main reason for breast cysts also conservative treatment should be given. DESIGN: To evaluate whether adjuvant pharmacologic therapy is effective in breast cysts recurrence prevention. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 women (35-54 yrs) were treated with fine needle aspiration and afterwards with bromocriptine, estrogen-progestogens and progestogens. RESULTS: T…

The epidemiology of gross cystic disease of the breast confirmed by biopsy or by aspiration of cyst fluid.

This study concerns 3443 patients treated by 1 physician for benign breast conditions, with follow-up on 94% of the patients averaging 19 years. Over three quarters of these patients had gross cystic disease (GCD) of the breast confirmed by aspiration of cyst fluid or by biopsy. Diagnosis of GCD by microscopic pathology review alone is shown to have high error rates when compared with information in the operative report and the gross pathology report. The risk of subsequent breast cancer for GCD patients was more than double the rates in the general population, and about the same as that of pa

Evaluation of human breast cysts according to their biochemical and hormonal composition, and cytologic examination.

Breast cyst fluids were aspirated during the mild luteal phase of the menstrual cycle from 88 patients with gross cystic disease. According to intracystic Na+/K+ ratio three categories of cyst were identified: Type I with low Na+/K+ ratio, low levels of chloride, glucose, and pH, and high concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHAS) and apocrine epithelium; Type II with high Na+/K+ ratio presenting levels of chloride, glucose, pH, and DHAS similar to those found in plasma, and flattened epithelium; Type III with intermediate values for the above parameters. The findings suggest tha…

[Comparison of the diagnostic value of the individual examination steps (triple diagnosis) in breast cysts].

Basic examination (palpation and mammography) as well as triple diagnosis (sonography, aspiration cytology, pneumocystography) are employed in the diagnosis and therapy of mamma cysts. Among 133 aspirated cysts we found by sonography 6 complicated cysts; 4 of these were cyst wall carcinomas. We found one further complicated cyst by aspiration cytology with a PAP IV; therefore, this sonographically uncomplicated cyst was extirpated as well resulting in cystic mastopathy without any signs of malignancy. Sonography and pneumocystography agreed perfectly in the diagnosis of cysts. Additionally mam

Absence of in vitro mutagenicity of the fluid from breast cysts of women with macrocystic disease.

Cystic fluid from 30 Greek women suffering from macrocystic disease was tested for mutagenicity in the Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity assay using three bacterial strains in the presence or absence of liver homogenate. None of the samples tested showed mutagenic potential in this test supporting the absence of potential carcinogens in the cyst fluids.

A RARE CASE OF HYDATID CYST DISEASE OF THE BREAST: A CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF LITERATURE.

Hydatid cyst of the breast is extremely rare even in endemic areas and it only accounts for 0.27% of all hydatid cyst disease cases. It can either be a primary site or part of a disseminated hydatidosis. Surgery remains to be a treatment of choice. Only few reports are published in the literatures and most of the reported cases have been diagnosed postoperatively as it is not easy to reach at a definitive diagnosis with clinical examination and radiological investigations only. This is a case of an isolated hydatid cyst of breast in an 18-year old woman from the Amhara region, Ethiopia. She pr

The sonographic findings and differing clinical implications of simple, complicated, and complex breast cysts.

Although palpable and mammographic breast masses are common and frequently reflect underlying fibrocystic change, they must be distinguished from breast malignancy. Clinical characterization of these masses is often unreliable, and mammographic appearances alone cannot distinguish between those that are solid and those that are cystic. Sonography is an important adjunct to characterize these abnormalities further. Management of solid masses is well established, but overlap in appearance of cystic lesions has led to variability in reporting and management. With current high-resolution ultrasoun

Radioimmunoassay for the measurement of thrombospondin in plasma and breast cyst fluid: validation and clinical application.

Thrombospondin is an adhesive protein that has been implicated in malignancy, specifically in tumour progression and angiogenesis. We developed a radioimmunoassay for the measurement of thrombospondin in plasma and breast cyst fluid. The assay exhibited high accuracy, with recoveries of 102-136% and acceptable imprecision, with an intra-assay coefficient of variation (CV) of <7.5% across the analytical range 30-1000 ng/mL and inter-assay CV of 4.4% and 7.7% at 152 and 224 ng/mL, respectively. Thrombospondin measured in the breast cyst fluid of patients with gross cystic disease of the breast s…

[The prognostic significance of the measurement of Ca 15-3 in the fluid of large breast cysts].

Ca 15-3 was assayed in serum and in breast cysts fluid of 78 non neoplastic patients presenting Gross Cysts (GCD). In apocrine cysts and in the mixed type (serous and apocrine, class III) relapse was indicated by high serum and intracystic levels of the marker. Ca 15-3, therefore, may discriminate in a group of cysts a higher cellular resistance as well as an increased cell proliferation. Results suggest an important role of the marker in the follow up of patients with GCD and for the early detection of cyst relapse.

Pleomorphic carcinoma of the breast associated with cyst formation: a unique surgical case focusing on cytological and immunohistochemical findings. Cystic breast PC.

UNLABELLED: A mammary nodular lesion was recognized one month before the surgery in the right upper breast of a 55-year-old female. The fine needle aspiration cytology specimens contained many individual bizarre, multi-nucleated, and/or giant cells having hyperchromatic pleomorphic nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and relatively abundant cytoplasm, admixed with numerous mitotic figures in a hemorrhagic or inflammatory background. A small amount of sheet-like or three-dimensional clusters of malignant cells coexisted. We first interpreted it as high-grade malignancy, such as invasive carcinoma, not

A rare phenotype of breast hydatid cyst causing misdiagnosis and unnecessary intervention: a case report.

Hydatid cyst (cystic echinococcosis) is a chronic parasitic infection by the larval stage of the cestode that is called Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus) resulting in the development of cystic lesions in animals and humans. In this report, we describe a rare phenotype of hydatid cyst in the breast of a 23-year-old female presented with breast mass in the left upper outer quadrant for 3 months with palpable left axillary lymph nodes. Both US and mammography provided a picture of complex suspicious cystosolid lesion with amorphous micro-calcification (BIRAD-4A). Surgical consultation was p

Epidermal growth factor in breast cyst fluid: relationship with intracystic cation and androgen conjugate content.

In recent years, several studies focused on the biochemical analysis of breast cyst fluid composition. It has been shown that breast cysts lined by apocrine epithelium contain higher levels of potassium and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate as compared to cysts lined by flattened cells, and that women with apocrine cysts are more likely to develop breast cancer. In the present study, we measured the intracystic levels of sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHEA-S), and epidermal growth factor (EGF), a factor which could play a role in the autocrine or paracrine control…

[Radioimmunoassay of 5-androstene-3 beta, 17 beta-diol in plasma and breast cyst fluid].

A simple and reliable radioimmunoassay for the determination of 5-androstene-3 beta,17 beta-diol (5-Adiol) in peripheral plasma and in breast cyst fluid, after chromatography on Celite microcolum has been described and evaluated. The antiserum used was raised in the rabbit injected with dehydroepiandrosterone-15 alpha-carboxymethyl-bovine serum albumin. In men below 40 years of age the levels ranged from 0.85 to 2.80 ng/ml (mean +/- SEM: 1.52 +/- 0.11; n = 24) and from 0.50 to 2.20 ng/ml (mean: 0.93 +/- 0.09; n = 20) in men aged between 41 and 62 years. The mean level was significantly differe…

Another Strategy for the Treatment of Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: Totally Endoscopic Surgery by Breast Approach.

OBJECTIVE: Open surgery is the most common treatment of thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC), but it leaves obvious neck scarring. This study aimed to explore the feasibility and strategy of total endoscopic procedure by breast approach to avoid such scarring on the neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study reviewed 13 patients who underwent endoscopic resection of TGDC and 15 patients who underwent open resection of TGDC. We compared and analyzed factors including operative time, estimated blood loss, postoperative hospitalization, complications, and cosmetic effect. RESULTS: The surgery by the endo

Breast cyst fluid heparan sulphate is distinctively N-sulphated depending on apocrine or flattened type.

Breast cyst fluid (BCF) contained in gross cists is involved with its many biomolecules in different stages of breast cystic development. Type I apocrine and type II flattened cysts are classified based on biochemical, morphological and hormonal differences, and their different patterns of growth factors and active biocompounds may require different regulation. In a previous paper, hyaluronic acid in a very low content and chondroitin sulphate/dermatan sulphate were identified and characterized in BCF. In this new study, various apocrine and flattened BCFs were analyzed for HS concentration an…

Measurement of breast-tissue x-ray attenuation by spectral mammography: first results on cyst fluid.

Knowledge of x-ray attenuation is essential for developing and evaluating x-ray imaging technologies. For instance, techniques to better characterize cysts at mammography screening would be highly desirable to reduce recalls, but the development is hampered by the lack of attenuation data for cysts. We have developed a method to measure x-ray attenuation of tissue samples using a prototype photon-counting spectral mammography unit. The method was applied to measure the attenuation of 50 samples of breast cyst fluid and 50 samples of water. Spectral (energy-resolved) images of the samples were …
