Evaluation of dermoscopic features for distinguishing melanoma from special site nevi of the breast.

BACKGROUND: Nevi of special sites display aberrant clinical and histologic features that can be difficult to distinguish from melanoma, leading to unnecessarily high rates of excision with poor cosmetic or functional results. Dermoscopy can improve clinical assessment of melanocytic lesions by visualizing morphologic structures beyond the epidermis. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the value of specific dermoscopic features for diagnosing melanocytic neoplasms arising on the breast area in females. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we collected clinical and dermoscopic information f

Localized Breast Amyloidosis Associated with Sjörgren Syndrome.

Sjörgren syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease that is rarely associated with amyloid deposits, and in most reported cases, these deposits are localized to a single organ. Amyloidosis of the breast is a rare and unexpected finding, and only 5 case series with 63 patients have been published in the past 40 years. To date, only 6 cases have been reported in which Sjörgren syndrome is associated with amyloid deposits in the breast. A 61-year-old female diagnosed with Sjörgren syndrome underwent a breast needle core biopsy for calcifications. Microscopic examination revealed amyloid deposits i

Filarial breast lump.

Lymphatic filariasis is one of the most debilitating and disfiguring scourges among all diseases. This report presents a case of a woman with recurrent breast nodularity after being previously operated for a suspected breast neoplasm. We would like to highlight the issue of similar clinical presentation of a filarial breast lump and other breast lesions leading to inappropriate therapy.

Breast cancer after Hodgkin's disease in two sisters.

Two sisters had breast cancer at four years and 11 years after diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease. The affected breast tissues had received several hundred rads of scatter radiation during treatment of the lymphoma. Family history revealed breast cancer in a third sister and five other women in the paternal line. Cytogenetic and HLA studies showed no markers of susceptibility to neoplasia. Development of second primary neoplasms of the breast in the two sisters may have resulted from interactions between genetic factors and carcinogenic effects of radiation exposure.

Mucin-Producing Lobular Breast Carcinoma Metastasis to an Ovarian Fibroma: Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Analysis of a Rare Case and Literature Review.

Breast cancer stands as the primary cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide, often presenting with distant metastases upon diagnosis. Ovarian metastases originating from breast cancer represent a range of 3-30% of all ovarian neoplasms. Case Report: Herein, we present the histopathological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical findings of a rare case involving mucin-producing lobular breast carcinoma metastasizing to an ovarian fibroma in an 82-year-old female previously diagnosed with lobular breast carcinoma. Histopathological examination of the excised tissues revealed a b

Survey of dentin sialophosphoprotein and its cognate matrix metalloproteinase-20 in human cancers.

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases-20 (MMP20) expression is widely regarded as tooth specific, with expression limited to dental hard tissues. Recently, we reported MMP20 expression and interaction with dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), a member of the Small Integrin Binding Ligand N-linked Glycoproteins (SIBLINGs), in human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and dysplastic oral premalignant lesions (OPLs), suggesting a role for MMP20-DSPP interaction in oral carcinogenesis. METHODS: This study aimed to survey the expression of MMP20 and its cognate DSPP partner in the breast, colon, pro

A 30-year analysis of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac neoplasms are rare and the vast majority are metastatic in origin. Symptoms of cardiac neoplasms (primary or metastatic) usually appear late in the course of the disease and are often ignored because of the more severe effects of the primary malignant disorder or its therapy. Consequently, cardiac neoplasms, especially metastatic ones, are often not discovered until autopsy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy and to determine the sites of origins of metastatic cardiac neoplasms. METHODS: The pathology records from consecutive autopsies p

Sudden loss of vision due to breast cancer metastasis to the eyeball.

Intraocular choroidal metastasis is a very rare cause of blindness. Carcinoma of breast is the most common primary malignancy the accounts for choroidal metastasis in females. Other primary neoplasms which can uncommonly metastasize to the choroid are gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, pancreas, prostate and testis. Metastatic neoplasm to the eye outnumbers the primary tumors such as retinoblastoma and malignant melanoma. We present a case of sudden loss of vision due to breast cancer metastasis to the eyeball. The interval between the diagnosis of the primary tumor and the choroidal metastasis

Trends of female mortality from cancer of the breast and cancer of the genital organs.

The author reviews the mortality statistics from cancer of the breast in females and from malignant neoplasms of the uterus and of the other female genital organs for nineteen countries over the years 1920-53, first considering the general trend of the mortality series for each group of diseases for all ages and then analysing for each sector of mortality the changes which have occurred in the age-specific deathrates in some pivotal years during the same period.Considerable differences in the levels of total mortality from each group of tumours for various countries are noted. The important va

Pure mucinous carcinoma with axillary lymph node metastasis in a male breast.

Pure mucinous carcinoma of the male breast is an extremely uncommon malignant breast neoplasm and usually occurs at advanced age. It is characterized by a higher degree of mucus production, a more benign behavior, a lower incidence of metastatic nodal involvement, and a subsequent higher survival rate. We describe such a case of a 59-year-old male, who displayed a gradually growing retroareolar tumor of the right breast. The tumor was well demarcated and had a soft consistency with a gelatinous appearance. Based on the preoperative clinical identification of right axillary lymphadenopathy, the

The spectrum of immunohistochemical reactivity of monoclonal antibody DS6 in nongynecologic neoplasms.

DS6 is a murine monoclonal antibody that was developed using ovarian serous adenocarcinoma as immunogen. DS6 reacts immunohistochemically with a tumor-associated antigen, CA6, which has only a limited range of expression in normal human tissues. CA6 is most characteristically expressed in type II pneumocytes, fallopian tube epithelium, and urothelium, but lacks expression in mesothelium. The authors recently reported the spectrum of reactivity of DS6 with a wide variety of neoplasms of the gynecologic tract and found DS6 to be highly characteristic of serous neoplasms. CA6 is also expressed in

Case report: differential diagnosis between primary cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma versus extramammary or metastatic breast adenocarcinoma.

Cutaneous apocrine adenocarcinoma (CAA) is a rare adnexal neoplasm that histologically can mimic breast carcinoma metastatic to the skin or apocrine carcinoma arising in ectopic breast tissue. It can present with a wide range of clinical modalities and can often simulate many benign processes, which delays its diagnosis and hinders its prognosis. We describe a case of a 33-year-old man who had a short-evolution small nodule in the right axilla with local lymph node metastases. The immunohistochemical characterization was closer to that of breast adenocarcinoma than to an adnexal neoplasm. This

[Syringomatous breast carcinoma and correlated lesions].

A rare case of syringomatous carcinoma of the breast in a 64-year-old female patient is reported. The tumor, occurring in the left breast, measured 1 cm. A quadrantectomy was performed and the patient presented no further recurrence or metastasis. Histologically, the neoplasm was composed of small tubules, often dilated, sometimes with a "tadpole" appearance, lined by epithelial flattened cells, and of keratinizing squamous cysts embedded in a desmoplastic stroma. Some tumors occurring in other anatomic sites show histologic features similar to those of syringomatous carcinoma of the breast: i

Secondary Breast Burkitt Lymphoma Involving the Stomach, Ovary, Pancreas, and Bones: A Case Report.

Breast lymphomas are rare, malignant breast neoplasms with a heterogeneous pattern of clinical symptoms. Burkitt's lymphoma is a rare, highly aggressive, and rapidly growing B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. We report about a 27-year-old woman diagnosed as having secondary breast Burkitt's lymphoma, probably originating from the stomach, with multiple distant metastases. Breast ultrasonography revealed multiple, variable sized, heterogeneous masses with posterior acoustic enhancement and echogenic rims. These imaging findings may sometimes overlap with those of other breast malignancies. However, u…

The coexistence of invasive ductal carcinoma and malignant phyllodes tumor with liposarcomatous and chondrosarcomatous differentiation in the same breast in a post-osteosarcoma case.

Malignant phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare biphasic neoplasms, the stromal component of which may show homologous and heterologous sarcomatous elements. Malignant epithelial transformation is rare. It has been reported in a few cases of in situ and infiltrating ductal or lobular carcinoma. Rarely, breast carcinomas and phyllodes tumors may also develop in the same breast independent of each other. To our knowledge, this is the first case of two different types of tumor occurring in the same breast at the same time in a post-osteosarcoma case.

Breast cancer epidemiology in Czech Republic.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of malignant neoplasms death in Czech female population. Only about half of all new breast cancer cases are diagnosed in early stage, consequently therapeutically and prognostically favourable. The benefit of conceptual breast cancer screening, showing an absolute decrease in mortality, can be expected after 5-7 years of screening. That is why early start of mammography hand in hand with clinical examination of the breast will have to be one of the highest priority in the national health promotion programmes.

Pilomatrixoma of the adult male breast: a rare tumor with typical ultrasound features.

Pilomatrixomas are uncommon benign skin neoplasms arising from the hair follicle matrix. They occur more commonly in children than adults. Most originate on the head, neck, or upper extremities, less commonly on the trunk or lower extremities, and very infrequently in the breast. We present a rare case of pilomatrixoma of the breast in an adult male. As the patient had a strong family history of breast cancer, a full work-up of the breast mass was performed. Ultimately, an excisional biopsy was carried out for patient reassurance.

Sclerosing lobular hyperplasia of the breast after reduction mammaplasty.

Sclerosing lobular hyperplasia is a uncommon benign fibroproliferative lesion of the breast similar to a fibroadenoma. It usually presents as a mass in the outer quadrant of the breast of younger women. The authors report an atypical case of sclerosing lobular hyperplasia that presented as bilateral breast masses in an elderly woman after a reduction mammaplasty. Breast masses that develop after reduction are often a result of fat necrosis, internal scarring, or organizing hematomas. Those that do not resolve warrant open biopsy because they may represent malignant or benign neoplasms.
