The impact of pestivirus on an artificial breeding program for cattle.

After the introduction of pestivirus into a herd undergoing an embryo transfer and artificial insemination program, substantial post-weaning … The losses on this property clearly indicate the need to routinely screen animals in an artificial breeding program for freedom from pestivirus infection.

THE REACTION OF STANDARD BREEDS OF RABBITS TO EXPERIMENTAL SYPHILIS.

A comparative study was made of the character and severity of the infection produced by Tr. pallidum in groups of standard bred Havana, Dutch, English, Himalayan, and Rex rabbits. All known variables that might influence the course of the disease were common to the different breed groups. On the basis of certain clinical data selected as criteria for the determination of variations in the response to syphilitic infection, it was found that the Havana and Dutch animals were resistant while the English, Himalayan, and Rex rabbits were susceptible. From these results, it appears that breed, race,

Genetic characterization of the indigenous Cyprus cattle breed.

The Cyprus Bovine Breed, an indigenous cattle population, faces ongoing challenges in preserving its genetic diversity due to the introducti … genetic admixture with commercial cattle breeds grown in Cyprus. The analysis also highlights low inbreeding (Fis = 0.066) and genetic cohesion across regions of Cyprus. It was found that the Cyprus Bovine Breed shows genetic affinities to both Zebu and African Bos taurus cattle, reflecting a complex history of genetic exchanges likely driven by ancient tr …

Genomics of Dwarfism in Italian Local Chicken Breeds.

The identification of the dwarf phenotype in chicken is based on body weight, height, and shank length, leaving the differentiation between dwarf and small breeds ambiguous. The aims of the present study were to characterize the sequence variations associated with the dwarf phenotype in three Italian chicken breeds and to investigate the genes associated with their phenotype. Five hundred and forty-one chickens from 23 local breeds (from 20 to 24 animals per breed) were sampled. All animals were genotyped with the 600 K chicken SNP array. Three breeds were described as "dwarf", namely, Merican

Development of lymphocyte subpopulations in local breed chickens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Local breeds of chicken are known to have relatively higher disease resistance to many endemic diseases and diseases that are highly virulent in commercial chickens. This study aimed to address the lymphocyte subpopulations in three constitutive immune system organs (thymus, bursa of Fabricius, and spleen) in 30, 8-week-old, male local breed chickens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The T (CD3+) and B lymphocytes (Bu-1+) were identified through one-color, direct immunofluorescent staining of the thymus, bursa, and spleen lymphocytes. Likewise, two-color, direct immunofluorescent st

Genetics of Arthrogryposis and Macroglossia in Piemontese Cattle Breed.

Arthrogryposis and macroglossia are congenital pathologies known in several cattle breeds, including Piemontese. As variations in single genes were identified as responsible for arthrogryposis in some breeds, we decided: (i) to test the hypothesis of a similar genetic determinism for arthrogryposis in the Piemontese breed by genotyping affected and healthy animals with a high-density chip and applying genome-wide association study (GWAS), FST and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) procedures, and (ii) to investigate with the same approach the genetic background of macroglossia, for which no

Development of the Caecal Microbiota in Three Broiler Breeds.

The development of the caecal microbiota plays a role in the metabolism and immune competence of chickens. A detailed understanding of normal succession in the caecal microbiota can inform the use of probiotics and other interventions to optimize the caecal microbiota. The development of the microbiota in caecal mucus and lumen samples from three breeds of broiler chicken (Cobb 500, n = 36; Hubbard JA87, n = 38; and Ross 308, n = 36) was observed between 0 and 42 days post hatch. Chicks were housed in the same room of a climate-controlled, biosecure chicken housing unit. Between 0 and 14 days

Variability of laying hen behaviour depending on the breed.

OBJECTIVE: For many generations, most species of farm animals have been subjected to intense and strictly targeted selection for improvement of their performance traits. This has led to substantial changes in animal anatomy and physiology, which resulted in considerable differences between the current animal breeds and their wild ancestors. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is breed-specific variability in behaviour as well as differences in emotional reactivity and preferences of laying hens. METHODS: The investigations involved 50 Green-legged Partridge, 50 Polbar, and 50

Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence varies by cat breed.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread zoonotic parasite that is relevant for veterinary and public health. The domestic cat, the definitive host species with the largest worldwide population, has become evolutionarily and epidemiologically the most important host of T. gondii. The outcome of T. gondii infection is influenced by congenital and acquired host characteristics. We detected differences in T. gondii seroprevalence by cat breed in our previous studies. The aims of this study were to estimate T. gondii seroprevalence in selected domestic cat breeds, and to evaluate whether being of a certa

Diphallia in a Mixed-Breed Puppy: Case Report.

An 8 mo old intact male mixed-breed dog presented for diphallia with paraphimosis of the nonfunctional, accessory penis. Bloodwork, an abdominal ultrasound, and a positive contrast retrograde urethrogram were performed and revealed no other structural abnormalities. Surgical excision of the accessory penis was elected. This is one of three reported cases of diphallia in the dog in the English literature, but this is the only case in which no other congenital abnormalities were identified. The authors also review diphallia in both the veterinary and human literature.

Allergen Levels in the Hair of Different Cattle Breeds.

BACKGROUND: Cattle are well-known sources of respiratory allergens in agricultural environments. Breed-specific differences in Bos d 2 (a major bovine allergen) levels in cattle hair have been previously suggested but not fully characterized. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to determine whether hair from common cattle breeds differs in protein and allergen content. METHODS: In total, 80 hair samples from 16 different cattle breeds were analyzed. The protein concentration was determined using the Bradford assay. The allergen content was measured using a sandwich ELISA based on poly

The effect of mercury on baseline corticosterone in a breeding songbird.

Although songbirds accumulate mercury at rates equivalent to better-studied aquatic avian species, effects of mercury bioaccumulation in songbirds remain understudied. Little is known about the effects of mercury on endocrine physiology, but recent evidence indicates that mercury may disrupt the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Both field-based correlational studies and a recent dosing experiment suggest that mercury exposure alters levels of the primary avian stress hormone, CORT. We sampled zebra finches that had been dosed with 0, 0.5, or 1.0 ppm dietary methylmercury fo

Retroperitoneal perirenal pseudocyst in a Massese breed ram.

The macroscopic and microscopic features of a retroperitoneal perirenal pseudocyst in a 12-month-old ram without impairment of renal function are described. In humans and animals, uriniferous pseudocysts may be of traumatic origin, resulting from rupture of kidney, renal pelvis, or ureter, or congenital. Lymphatic pseudocysts may develop secondary to inflammatory obstruction of the hilar lymphatics after perinephritis or renal transplantation. In this case, histologic characteristics of the pseudocyst wall were suggestive of development from the parietal peritoneal layer encapsulating the kidn

Collie eye anomaly in a mixed-breed dog.

A 5-year-old, mixed-breed dog was presented for tetraparesis. Neurologic alterations included a decreased menace response in both eyes. Therefore, an ophthalmic examination was requested. The dog was visual, but menace response, dazzle and pupillary light reflexes were reduced bilaterally. Indirect ophthalmoscopy revealed bilateral optic nerve coloboma and severe choroidal hypoplasia. These lesions closely resembled the ophthalmoscopic features of Collie eye anomaly (CEA). In spite of treatment, the dog's condition worsened and the animal was therefore euthanized. Histology of the globes confi

Polyglucosan body disease in a mixed-breed dog.

AIM: To describe the histopathology of a previously unrecorded canine disease and deduce the cause of the lesions. METHODS: Formalin-fixed tissues were processed into paraffin wax and epoxy resin for light and electron microscopy of variously stained sections of liver, brain, heart muscle and kidney. RESULTS: Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) -positive bodies in liver and myocardium were typical of a polyglucosan body disease. Neurons contained coarse granular material that stained similarly to the polyglucosan bodies. CONCLUSION: The nature, distribution and histochemistry of lesions observed are

Pharmacokinetics of propofol in mixed-breed dogs and greyhounds.

Pharmacokinetics and recovery characteristics of propofol in Greyhounds and mixed-breed dogs were compared. In all dogs, disposition of propofol was adequately described by a 2-compartment open model, with a rapid distribution phase followed by a slower elimination phase. When findings in Greyhounds were compared with those in mixed-breed dogs, significant differences were observed in mean concentrations of propofol in blood, recovery characteristics, and estimates for apparent volume of distribution, volume of distribution at steady state, and total body clearance. In addition, Greyhounds rec
