A New Challenge to Species Delimitation: Remarkable Genomic and Ecological Diversity in the Butterfly Melitaea diamina.

Evolution relentlessly challenges any concept of species, and human efforts to fit a taxonomic hypothesis to patterns in nature often seem unsatisfactory. Genomics show that a solution does not always come with more data: a fine-scaled view may reveal populations with a more gradual array of differentiation, infer cases of hybrid origin and bring to light the existence of ghost populations. The false heath fritillary, Melitaea diamina, is a Palearctic butterfly with patchy, localized populations highly dependent on humid temperate habitats. Despite its extensive geographic range, populations a

Magnetic Field Modulates Butterfly-Hysteretic Formaldehyde Response in Sm-Doped BiFeO3 Sensors.

The development of a high-performance formaldehyde gas sensor is essential for protecting human health and monitoring environmental quality. Beyond conventional chemical modification strategies, the inherent magnetoelectric coupling effect of multiferroic materials offers another promising approach, even though magnetic fields have not conventionally been considered as direct triggers for the sensing processes. In this study, we demonstrate that gas sensors fabricated with 5% samarium (Sm)-doped BiFeO3 exhibit a distinctive butterfly-hysteretic magnetic field-dependent response behavior toward

A butterfly-shaped B ← N open box for gas-phase benzene/cyclohexane separation.

A butterfly-shaped B ← N open molecular box, (TPX)(BMCT)2(PhCl)4, is constructed via a [4 + 2] coordination mode, and the activated form (TPX)(BMCT)2 is obtained after removal of chlorobenzene guests. The two methyl groups on the central benzene ring of the tetradentate pyridine ligand create steric hindrance, forcing the dative B ← N bonds to become nearly parallel and achieving perfect geometric complementarity with the bidentate boronate ester. After activation, the characteristic infrared bands of the open molecular box remain unchanged, confirming its structural integrity. Static gravimet

Exposure route mediates toxicological effects of sulphur and fluxapyroxad fungicides in a non-target butterfly.

Agricultural intensification and the associated increase in pesticide use have raised concerns about impacts on non-target insects. However, fungicides, despite their frequent application, remain poorly studied, particularly for herbivorous species. This is partly caused by the fact that they are considered less harmful than other pesticides. We here investigate the effects of three fungicides commonly used in viticulture, two sulphur- and one fluxapyroxad-based ones, on the cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Larvae were exposed to fungicides orally

Sex-based differences in front crawl and butterfly sprint performance in age-group swimmers.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the key variables influencing 50 m sprint performance in front crawl and butterfly strokes and determine the predominant predictors of sex-related performance differences in each technique in age-group swimmers. METHODS: Thirty national-level age-group swimmers (15 boys and 15 girls; age 13.5 ± 1.0 years) underwent assessments of anthropometry, biological maturation, neuromuscular performance (dynamic strength index of upper and lower limbs), anaerobic critical velocity, tethered swimming force, and stroke mechanics. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses revealed substantial

Robotically assisted mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique in a patient with a narrow chest.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery for mitral regurgitation is challenging in patients with narrow chests due to limited thoracic space. The butterfly technique can prevent systolic anterior motion in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation and redundant posterior leaflets, but it is difficult to perform via minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Few reports have described mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique or in a narrow chest. This case report demonstrates the feasibility and utility of robotically assisted mitral valve repair using the butterfly technique in

Natural repeated backcrosses lead to triploidy and tetraploidy in parthenogenetic butterfly lizards (Leiolepis: Agamidae).

Obligatory parthenogenesis in vertebrates is restricted to squamate reptiles and evolved through hybridisation. Parthenogens can hybridise with sexual species, resulting in individuals with increased ploidy levels. We describe two successive hybridisations of the parthenogenetic butterfly lizards (genus Leiolepis) in Vietnam with a parental sexual species. Contrary to previous proposals, we document that parthenogenetic L. guentherpetersi has mitochondrial DNA and two haploid sets from L. guttata and one from L. reevesii, suggesting that it is the result of a backcross of a parthenogenetic L.

Butterfly Cartilage Inlay Technique for Repairing Medium-to-Large-Sized Tympanic Membrane Perforations.

OBJECTIVE: The butterfly cartilage inlay technique was originally developed for repairing small tympanic membrane (TM) perforations but is now increasingly used for repairing large TM perforations. Although studies have evaluated the effectiveness of butterfly tympanoplasty for repairing medium-to-large-sized TM perforations, no study has compared its effectiveness with that of the conventional underlay cartilage technique. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of butterfly tympanoplasty for repairing medium-to-large-sized TM perforations compared with that of the conventional unde

Characterization of the histological response to the Butterfly Prostatic Retraction Device in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

PURPOSE: The Butterfly Prostatic Retraction Device ("Butterfly") is a permanent nitinol implant for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study examines the chronic response of prostate tissue to the Butterfly in histological specimens from patients in the Butterfly pilot clinical study. METHODS: Retrospective qualitative and semi-quantitative review of histological specimens of seven (7) patients who participated in the Butterfly pilot clinical study. Patients had at least 1-month implantation with the Butterfly prior to implant removal and TURP. Tissue samples were graded by two pathologists.

The 'beating-heart butterfly technique' for repair of basal post-infarction ventricle septum defect.

Ischaemic ventricular septal defect is a serious complication of acute myocardial infarction with poor outcome. We present the 'beating-heart butterfly' technique to close the ventricular septal defect with a double-layered pericardial patch sewn to the intact septum under beating-heart cardiopulmonary bypass in 4 highest-risk patients. This technique combined with a liberal postoperative mechanical circulatory support and open-chest treatment allowed excellent results with 12 months of survival in all patients.

Conductive Nerve Guidance Conduits Based on Morpho Butterfly Wings for Peripheral Nerve Repair.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI), causing loss of sensory and motor function, is a complex and challenging disease in the clinic due to the restricted regeneration capacity. Nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have become a promising substitute for peripheral nerve regeneration, but their efficacy is often limited. Here, inspired by the physiological structures of peripheral nerves, we present a conductive topological scaffold for nerve repair by modifying Morpho butterfly wing with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel encapsulated brain-derived neurotroph

Evolutionary and ecological processes influencing chemical defense variation in an aposematic and mimetic Heliconius butterfly.

Chemical defences against predators underlie the evolution of aposematic coloration and mimicry, which are classic examples of adaptive evolution. Surprisingly little is known about the roles of ecological and evolutionary processes maintaining defence variation, and how they may feedback to shape the evolutionary dynamics of species. Cyanogenic Heliconius butterflies exhibit diverse warning color patterns and mimicry, thus providing a useful framework for investigating these questions. We studied intraspecific variation in de novo biosynthesized cyanogenic toxicity and its potential ecologica…

A mosquito bites and a butterfly flies: A specific response type of frontal patients in a similarity task.

BACKGROUND: Patients with neurodegenerative diseases affecting the frontal lobes have difficulties in categorization tasks, such as the similarity tasks. They give two types of unusual response to the question: "In what way are an orange and a banana alike?", either a differentiation ("one is yellow, the other is orange") or a concrete similarity ("they are sweet"). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the categorization deficit of frontal patients and develop a short diagnostic tool to assess the nature of these difficulties. METHOD: We analyzed the responses provided by frontal and non-frontal neuro

Occurrence and host specificity of a neogregarine protozoan in four milkweed butterfly hosts (Danaus spp.).

Throughout their global range, wild monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are infected with the protozoan Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE). In monarchs, OE infection reduces pupal eclosion, adult lifespan, adult body size and flight ability. Infection of other butterfly hosts with OE is rare or unknown, and the only previously published records of OE infection were on monarch and queen butterflies (D. gilippus). Here we explored the occurrence and specificity of OE and OE-like parasites in four Danaus butterfly species. We surveyed wild D. eresimus (soldier), D. gilippus (queen), D. petilia (…

Multiple cues influence multiple traits in the phenotypically plastic melanization of the cabbage white butterfly.

Phenotypic plasticity, or the ability of organisms to produce different phenotypes depending upon environmental factors, may be adaptive in varying environments. However, because environments differ in many ways and organisms consist of many traits perfect phenotype-environment matches are unlikely. Studies that investigate multiple interacting environmental factors and the plastic responses of multiple traits should increase our understanding of the limits of adaptive plasticity. We experimentally examined the effects of variation in temperature and photoperiod on the seasonally plastic, and

First trimester screening for holoprosencephaly with choroid plexus morphology ('butterfly' sign) and biparietal diameter.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether choroid plexus morphology ('butterfly' sign) and biparietal diameter (BPD) are effective sonographic screening tools for holoprosencephaly (HPE) in the first trimester. METHODS: An axial view of the fetal head was obtained routinely to determine the presence of the 'butterfly' sign in pregnancies presenting for sonographic screening at 11-13 weeks of gestation. The same view was also used to obtain BPD measurements. The definitive diagnosis of HPE was established by the sonographic demonstration of an anterior cerebral monoventricular

Butterfly reconstruction of the anterior scalp hairline using bilaterally apposing STA island flaps.

Traditional methods of reconstruction of the hair-bearing scalp can provide incorrect directional hair growth and may require secondary procedures to complete. We present a case of reconstruction of the anterior hairline after tumour resection in an infant. Lessons learned from the case have led to a novel method for a single stage reconstruction of the anterior hairline using pedicled superficial artery flaps.
