Idiopathic Calcinosis Cutis in a Child: Report of a Rare Case.

Calcinosis cutis is characterized by the deposition of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Calcinosis cutis has different types, but the idiopathic type is considered the rarest type. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with a skin lesion on his right knee. No other similar nodules were noted elsewhere in the body. The lesion was first noted one year ago, and it slightly increased in size. The lesion was not pruritic and did not ulcerate. No history of previous trauma was provided. On physical examination, a nontender, firm, immobile, reddish, solitary nodule …

Dystrophic calcinosis cutis in a patient with cutaneous sarcoidosis in remission.

A 65-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our department because of a 5-month history of asymptomatic papules on the face. She was diagno … he dermis surrounded by inflammatory infiltrates without sarcoid granulomas. We made a diagnosis of calcinosis cutis. Basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis, milia-like calcinosis cutis, and subcutaneous calcified nodule should be differentiated. Calcinosis cutis can be classified into four subtypes based on pathogenesis: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, an …

Epidemiology and Treatment of Calcinosis Cutis: 13 Years of Experience.

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis is a rare condition associated with different diseases, which is difficult to manage. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In this retrospective study, the epidemiology of calcinosis cutis and the effectiveness of various treatment regimens in its management were assessed in a single center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of 34 patients suffering from calcinosis cutis (male:female = 12:22; mean age = 48.6 ± 18.6 years) treated at our department between 2003 and 2016 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Dystrophic, idiopathic, metastatic subtype, and calciphylaxis occurred i…

Diffuse idiopathic calcinosis cutis in an adult: a rare case.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis is a condition involving the deposition of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The disease is a pathological condition of unknown origin and hence is idiopathic. The salt deposition is confined to areas such as the breast and vulva in females and scrotum and penis in males. Diffuse calcification with multiple complications in an adult is a rare entity. Only one such case has been reported in literature. A 59-year-old female presented to us with swelling of the right elbow, multiple calcific nodular lesions all over her fingers approximately 0.5x0.5 cm…

Calcinosis cutis: a complication of intravenous administration of calcium glucanate.

Calcinosis cutis, the deposition of calcium in the dermis, can be dystrophic, metastatic, iatrogenic, or idiopathic. Here, we describe a case of iatrogenic calcinosis cutis secondary to extravasation of an intravenous calcium-containing solution in a child. We also review the literature regarding the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the development of calcinosis cutis after extravasation injuries. While iatrogenic calcinosis cutis is generally a benign entity, it is important to recognize its unique clinical and histopathologic presentation to avoid complications from misdiagnosis.

Early manifestation of obesity and calcinosis cutis in infantile pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism is a parathyroid hormone resistance condition, characterised by biochemical findings of hypocalcaemia or normocalcaemia with inappropriately elevated parathyroid hormone level and usually with a typical osteodystrophy feature. We report an infant with pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia, who presented with obesity and calcinosis cutis as a clue to diagnosis. A 1-year-old female infant presented with suspected Cushing syndrome. She had round face, flushed cheeks, short nose and low nasal bridge. The infant was normotensive and not virilised. Investigations for Cushing synd…

Generalized calcinosis cutis associated with probable leptospirosis in a dog.

A 6.5-year-old male German Shepherd acutely developed renal and hepatic disease. Serology revealed high concentrations of antibodies against Leptospira copenhageni, and a presumptive diagnosis of leptospirosis was made. The dog was successfully treated with antibiotics and supportive care over a 12-day period. Sixty-two days after the initial presentation, alopecia predominantly involving the dorsum and perineal areas developed. The skin lesions expanded over a 20-day period. Histology revealed generalized calcinosis cutis with follicular atrophy. An injection of 0.01 mg kg-1 dexamethasone sup…

Metastatic Calcinosis Cutis: Unusual Locations in End-Stage Renal Disease.

Metastatic calcinosis cutis is a rare consequence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which occurs due to elevated levels of serum phosphorus and abnormal phosphate and calcium metabolism, leading to the precipitation and deposition of calcium in the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues. This paper reports the case of a 33-year-old male with ESRD and a six-year history of hemodialysis treatment who presented with multiple areas of gradually enlarging, lobulated calcified soft tissue masses observed bilaterally at the level of the acromioclavicular joint and superomedial aspect of the right thigh,…

Treatment of calcinosis cutis associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases.

Calcinosis cutis is a condition that is commonly associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases. It is characterized by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue, which can cause pain, impair function, and have significant impacts on quality of life. Calcinosis cutis is difficult to manage because there is no generally accepted treatment: evidence supporting treatments is mostly comprised of case reports and case series, sometimes yielding mixed findings. Both pharmacologic and procedural interventions have been proposed to improve calcinosis cutis, a…
