Succinylcholine-induced cardiac arrest in unsuspected becker muscular dystrophy--a case report.

A five year-old boy undergoing elective tonsillectomy sustained cardiac arrest following the administration of a single dose of succinylcholine during induction of anesthesia. With a 10-minute cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during which intravenous calcium gluconate, epinephrine, and sodium bicarbonate were given and DC counter shock applied, we were successful to restore cardiac activity without neurological sequelae. The cause of cardiac arrest we speculated was hyperkalemia, possibly secondary to succinylcholine-induced rhabdomyolysis. It is suggested that succinylcholine should not be…

Calcinosis cutis: a complication of intravenous administration of calcium glucanate.

Calcinosis cutis, the deposition of calcium in the dermis, can be dystrophic, metastatic, iatrogenic, or idiopathic. Here, we describe a case of iatrogenic calcinosis cutis secondary to extravasation of an intravenous calcium-containing solution in a child. We also review the literature regarding the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the development of calcinosis cutis after extravasation injuries. While iatrogenic calcinosis cutis is generally a benign entity, it is important to recognize its unique clinical and histopathologic presentation to avoid complications from misdiagnosis.

Thermal C-glycosylation of D-glucal with trimethylsilyl cyanide.

The treatment of 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal and unprotected D-glucal with trimethylsilyl cyanide, under thermal conditions in the absence of catalyst, afforded the corresponding 2,3-unsaturated glycosyl cyanides in high yield.

Examination of toxicity of diisopropylammonium dichloracetate (DADA), remedies for cardiac diseases, toward isolated rat hepatocytes.

Oxygen uptake (OU) and cell viability (CV) of isolated rat hepatocytes as a part of the indexes of hepatopathy were determined following treatment with DADA, the active principle of pangamic acid. DADA increased OU at high concentrations, but not at low ones. However, CV became higher as the concentration became lower. DADA led to no remarkable toxicity when used alone. When the mixture of DADA and calcium gluconate was tested, DADA showed no palliative action; nor did it when combined with other hepatotoxins such as trapidil, rifampicin, hexobarbital, thiopental sodium, and Citanest-octapress…

The effect of maternal hypocalcemia on fetal heart rate baseline variability.

Marked decrease in fetal heart rate variability during labor was observed in a term fetus, borne by a mother with severe hypocalcemia due to idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and nutritional vitamin D deficiency. During the period of decreased baseline variability, fetal scalp pH was normal. A marked increase in fetal heart rate variability was observed within 5 minutes of intravenous administration of 1 gram calcium gluconate to the parturient. It seems that the recognition of the effect of maternal hypocalcemia on baseline fetal heart rate variability is important for accurate interpretation of …

The effect of calcium salts, ascorbic acid and peptic pH on calcium, zinc and iron bioavailabilities from fortified human milk using an in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell model.

The calcium, zinc, and iron bioavailabilities of human milk with commercial and noncommercial human milk fortifiers (HMFs) were evaluated under a variety of conditions: peptic digestion at pH 2 and pH 4, supplementation of ascorbic acid, and addition of three calcium salts. The noncommercial HMFs consisted of casein phosphopeptides (CPPs), alpha-lactalbumin, colostrum, and hydrolyzed whey protein concentrate (WPC). They were mixed with human milk (HM) and calcium, zinc, and iron were added. Ascorbic acid (AA) was added in certain studies. The commercial HMFs were Nestlé FM-85, Similac HMF (SHM

Calcium infusion and left ventricular diastolic function in patients with chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) function is sensitive to disorders in calcium metabolism. Most previous reports have focused on the effects of calcium on systolic performance. We studied the acute effect of calcium infusion on LV diastolic function in patients with moderate to severe chronic renal failure (CRF) and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHP). METHODS: We infused calcium gluconate at a constant rate of 45 mumol/kg/h to 14 patients with severe to moderate CRF and SHP. Our aim was to reach slightly supranormal levels of serum ionized calcium (1.35-1.45 mmol/l). LV diastolic function w…

"Permethrin chronic exposure alters motor coordination in rats: effect of calcium supplementation and amlodipine".

Recently was observed that pyrethroids decrease motor coordination and that calcium channels can be important targets for this effect. To contribute with this observation, this work studied the motor coordination and exploration (using hole-board apparatus), and locomotion (using open-field apparatus) of rats exposed to following treatments: permethrin (PM), PM plus calcium gluconate (CG) and PM plus amlodipine (AML). The results obtained show that CG or AML alone not changed the motor coordination while PM decreases it. CG kept the effect of permethrin; AML, however, decreased the values of p…

[Blood mineral (Ca, Mg, Na K, Pa) levels and aspartate aminotransferase, leucine aminopeptidase, creatine phosphokinase and alkaline phosphatase activity and blood glucose levels in cattle with hypomagnesemia prior to and following infusion of a 500 ml solution containing 60 g of Mg adipate and 60 g of Ca gluconate].

The levels of various compounds in blood serum and blood plasma were tested in 14 heads of cattle with hypomagnesiaemia (x = 0.76 +/- 0.29 mg/100 ml), prior to and following infusion of 500 ml of a calcium-magnesium solution (containing 60 g of magnesium adipate and 60 g of calcium gluconate). Concomitant hypocalcaemia (6.1 mg/100 ml) was recordable only from one animal. Most of the potassium as well as all Pa and protein values in blood serum were physiologically normal, while sodium ws somewhat reduced. The glucose level in blood plasma was increased in the animal with concomitant hypocalcae…
