Campylobacter jejuni infection in broiler chickens.

Day-old, straight-run broiler chickens were procured from a hatchery located in the Pacific Northwest. The chickens were subdivided individually into nine groups of 20 chickens. The chickens were tagged, housed in isolation chambers on wire, fed commercial broiler feed, and given water ad libitum. Three isolates of Campylobacter jejuni of poultry origin and one of human origin were tested in this study. Various C. jejuni cultures were inoculated into 9-day-old chickens by crop gavage. Four groups of 20 chickens were inoculated at a dose level of 0.5 ml of 1 x 10(2) colony-forming units (CFU)/m…

Acute cholecystitis caused by Campylobacter jejuni.

An 83-year-old man with acute cholecystitis caused by Campylobacter jejuni is described. The patient was cured after undergoing cholecystectomy and intravenous ofloxacin therapy.

[Erythema nodosum in Campylobacter jejuni colitis].

We report the case of a 27-years-old woman with erythema nodosum associated with ulcerative colitis due to Campylobacter jejuni as diagnosed by serology, endoscopy and histology. This case indicates a hitherto rarely described etiology of erythema nodosum.

Campylobacter pylori and peptic ulcer disease.

Campylobacter pylori is now known to be the most common and important cause of gastritis, and C. pylori infections have been associated with duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, nonulcer dyspepsia, and gastric cancer. Although it has been only possible to culture C. pylori for about 5 yr, there are already sufficient data available to allow us to develop the basic framework that relates C. pylori gastritis to the causation of peptic ulcer disease. We review the data and propose mechanisms that implicate C. pylori as an important factor in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease and consider the the…

Acute presentation of Campylobacter pylori gastritis.

A 46-yr-old male was admitted to hospital with profuse vomiting, epigastric pain, and an infiltrative gastric lesion. Evidence is presented supporting the proposition that the symptoms were the product of an acute inflammatory response in the stomach induced by the bacterium Campylobacter pylori. The progress of the patient was monitored over a 2-yr period by endoscopic examination and serology for C. pylori. A significant rise in IgG antibody to C. pylori was seen only at 14 wk.

Toxic megacolon due to Campylobacter colitis.

Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of acute infectious diarrhoea. Most patients recover in less than a week, but 20 per cent may have a prolonged or severe illness [1]. We describe a patient who developed a fulminant toxic dilatation of the colon necessitating a subtotal colectomy.

[Septic arthritis caused by Campylobacter fetus].

The ten published cases of septic arthritis due to Campylobacter fetus and two more recent cases, one of which was a delayed septic complication of a total hip replacement, are discussed. In 83% of cases, febrile monoarthritis occurred which in 7 out of the 12 cases involved an already diseased joint in a subject over 70 years of age (half of the patients), who was frequently alcoholic and presented either cancer or hepatic cirrhosis and/or diabetes. Hyperleukocytosis of the blood was variable (55% of cases). The joint fluid, which contained a high level of deteriorated polynuclear cells, was …

Pyloric Campylobacter infection and gastroduodenal disease.

In 1982, a new spiral Gram-negative bacterium which was similar to those of the genus Campylobacter was isolated from the gastric mucosa of 11 patients with gastritis. From then on, the organism was isolated in a further 114 of 267 patients who underwent antral biopsy in Fremantle Hospital between January 1983 and September 1984. During 1984, the bacterium was cultured from 88% of patients in whom it was detected histologically, and was not cultured from any patient with histologically normal gastric mucosa. The new bacterium, pyloric campylobacter, grew in three days on brain-heart infusion b…

Acute hepatitis associated with campylobacter colitis.

A patient with proven campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni acute colitis developed hepatocellular dysfunction, which paralleled the course of the colitis. Liver biopsy showed nonspecific reactive hepatitis. Other causes of acute hepatocellular damage were excluded. The patient made a complete recovery.

Reactive arthritis after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.

Reactive arthritis of 1 or more peripheral joints developed after an enteric infection with Campylobacter jejuni in 6 adult patients. Other reactive signs, such as conjunctivitis, aphthous stomatitis, stranguria and sterile leukocyturia occurred in 4 patients. Five of the 6 patients possessed the HLA-B27 antigen. The history indicated previous joint disease in 4 of the 6 patients. The short-term follow-up showed a benign course of the arthritis. When a reactive arthritis syndrome is clinically suspected, investigations should include a search for Campylobacter jejuni infection by culture of th…

Draft genomes of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains from Brazil representing novel sequence types.

Whole-genome sequencing identified three previously unidentified multilocus sequence types of Campylobacter jejuni (ST-12332) and Campylobacter coli (ST-12333 and ST-12663), harboring resistance genes for multiple antimicrobial classes. The sources of isolation highlight the circulation of resistance strains within animals and humans, emphasizing the need for preventive measures.

Human Campylobacter spp. infections in Italy.

PURPOSE: Campylobacter is a frequent cause of enteric infections with common antimicrobial resistance issues. The most recent reports of campylobacteriosis in Italy include data from 2013 to 2016. We aimed to provide national epidemiological and microbiological data on human Campylobacter infections in Italy during the period 2017-2021. METHODS: Data was collected from 19 Hospitals in 13 Italian Regions. Bacterial identification was performed by mass spectrometry. Antibiograms were determined with Etest or Kirby-Bauer (EUCAST criteria). RESULTS: In total, 5419 isolations of Campylobacter spp…

Characterization of Campylobacter jejuni-Neutrophil Interactions.

Campylobacter jejuni is the leading cause of bacterial-derived gastroenteritis worldwide, infecting 96 million individuals annually. During infection, inflammation and tissue pathology occur in the lower gastrointestinal tract, including the recruitment of leukocytes. Neutrophils are the most abundant leukocyte in humans, and recruitment is associated with bacterial infections and the development of various inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease. Neutrophils possess three main antibacterial functions: phagocytosis and degradation of microbes, degranulation to release anti…

Empyema associated with Campylobacter curvus infection.

We report the first case of thoracic empyema associated with Campylobacter curvus infection. A 65-year-old woman with a history of bronchiectasis presented with acute cough and phlegm. The patient reported dyspnoea and left chest pain accompanied by left pleural effusion, despite treatment with sitafloxacin. Curved Gram-negative rods, eventually identified as C. curvus using 16S ribosomal RNA- and atpA-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing, were cultured in anaerobic condition of pleural effusion together with Peptostreptococci. The patient recovered after thoracic drainage a…

Campylobacter concisus and inflammatory bowel disease.

Investigation of the possible role of Campylobacter concisus (C. concisus) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an emerging research area. Despite the association found between C. concisus and IBD, it has been difficult to explain how C. concisus, a bacterium that is commonly present in the human oral cavity, may contribute to the development of enteric diseases. The evidence presented in this review shows that some C. concisus strains in the oral cavity acquired zonula occludens toxin (zot) gene from a virus (prophage) and that C. concisus Zot shares conserved motifs with both Vibrio choler…
