This document summarizes current knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of candidiasis affecting the skin and oral mucosa. Several clinical forms of mucocutaneous candidiasis are distinguished depending on a patient's age and infected site, e.g. Candida intertrigo, erythema mycoticum infantile, erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica, candidal paronychia and onychia, Candida onychomycosis, and oral candidiasis. We present a full-term female infant with congenital candidiasis characterized by extensive vesicular and pustular skin lesions associated with pneumonia and severe respiratory distress that appeared during the first hours after birth. BACKGROUND: Invasive candidiasis is an increasing problem in neonatal intensive care units worldwide and is an important cause of morbidity, mortality and prolongation of hospital stay. Eight Italian hospital or University gynecology clinics participated in a prospective survey of patients with culture-confirmed symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) (October 1999 to March 2001). The authors report of a case of pseudotumour caused by Candida species without evidence of any underlying disease. No portal of entry of the infection was found.
