Cerebral palsy is a common affliction in childhood. In some cases, the spasticity that often occurs can be treated with dorsal rhizotomies. Classically, these procedures have not been performed in children in whom there are known specific congenital brain malformations. The authors report on two patients with holoprosencephaly and unilateral schizencephaly who underwent dorsal rhizotomy to treat their spasticity. The results were good. This study aimed to evaluate walking independence in acute-care hospital patients using neural networks based on acceleration and angular velocity from two walking tests. Forty patients underwent the 10-m walk test and the Timed Up-and-Go test at normal speed, with or without a cane. A survey for leptospiral antibodies was made of 1,375 persons in northern Trinidad between mid-1977 and mid-1978. The subjects were employees in seven occupational categories thought to entail a high risk of exposure to leptospires, and members of the general population of three rural and two urban communities. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of different aids on the amount of support hemiplegic subjects took from them. The relationship between the amount of support, severity of hemiplegia and walking ability were also assessed.
