The Occurrence and Meta-Analysis of Investigations on Intestinal Parasitic Infections Among Captive Wild Mammals in Mainland China.

This study investigated the infection rates of intestinal parasites in captive wild animals from 2000 to 2024 and analyzed the associated ri … arly high values were determined in several other orders like Artiodactyla (59%), Rodentia (57.1%), Carnivora (53.3%) and extremely low in Proboscidea (19.9%). The highest overall infection rate was recorded in summer. The infection rate of gastrointestinal parasites in captive wild mammals in mainland China is notably high. Additionally, parasitic infectio …

The structure of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) foci in Central Europe.

The investigations on the structure of TBE foci were carried out in the localities Jívová (northern Moravia), Topolčianky and Žírany (Tribeč … se microfoci. The maintenance hosts and indicators in each type of focus are mentioned. Free-living Carnivora can be considered as incidental hosts in each type of focus.

Digenetic trematodes in South American sea lions from southern Brazilian waters.

The aim of this work was to perform a systematic study to detect and quantify the digenetic trematode infections in South American sea lions from the southern Brazilian coast. Twenty-four South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens (Carnivora: Otaridae), were found dead along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, between June 2010 and September of 2011. Two trematode species were found in the intestines of O. flavescens, i.e., Stephanoprora uruguayense (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa (Digenea: Heterophyidae). Ascocotyle (P.) longa reached a prevalence of 33…

The impact of the land-to-sea transition on evolutionary integration and modularity of the pinniped backbone.

In this study, we investigate how the terrestrial-aquatic transition influenced patterns of axial integration and modularity in response to the secondary adaptation to a marine lifestyle. We use 3D geometric morphometrics to quantify shape covariation among presacral vertebrae in pinnipeds (Carnivora; Pinnipedia) and to compare with patterns of axial integration and modularity in their close terrestrial relatives. Our results indicate that the vertebral column of pinnipeds has experienced a decrease in the strength of integration among all presacral vertebrae when compared to terrestrial carni…

The noncervical lateral transverse foramina.

The lateral vertebral foramen (LVF) is an osseous feature found in thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of some artiodactyls and perissodactyls. To … s) and Cetacea (whales). No LVF were found in 15 species representing nine families of the outgroup Carnivora, thus the LVF appears to be a characteristic specific to the artiodactyls and perissodactyls.

Gross and microscopic anatomy of the pineal gland in Nasua nasua--coati (Linnaeus, 1766).

Nasua nasua, coati, is a mammal of the Carnivora order and Procyonidae family. It lives in bands composed of females and young males. The pineal gland or epiphysis of brain is endocrine, producing the melatonin. Its function is the control of the cycle of light environment, characteristic of day and night. For this research, five adult coatis were used, originating from CECRIMPAS-UNIfeob (Proc. IBAMA 02027.003731/04-76), Brazil. The animals were killed and perfusion-fixed in 10% formaldehyde. Pineals were measured and a medium size was found to be 2.3-mm-long and 1.3-mm-wide. Pineal gland was …

Comparative analysis of evolutionary modes in Mc1r coat color gene in wild mice and mustelids.

Sequences from ten species of Mus (Rodentia, Muridae) of the melanocortin-1 receptor (Mc1r) gene (945 bp), which plays a key role in coat color determination, were compared with an existing Mc1r dataset (ca. 498 bp) from 12 species of Mustela and Martes (Carnivora, Mustelidae). The dN/dS ratio (omega) was estimated at 0.19 for Mus and 0.35 for the mustelids, using a likelihood-based one-ratio model with empirical codon frequencies. Running the model with equal codon frequencies gave a dramatic increase in omega for the mustelids (1.02) but not for Mus (0.31), indicating stronger codon usage bi…

First findings and prevalence of adult heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) in wild carnivores from Serbia.

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic roundworm that causes a zoonotic disease known as dirofilariosis. Little is known about the role of wild carnivores serving as reservoirs in nature. Therefore, we examined 738 hearts and lungs of free ranging wild carnivores from Serbia to determine the presence of adult heartworms. During the period 2009-2013, the prevalence in golden jackals (Canis aureus) was 7.32%, in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) 1.55%, in wolves (Canis lupus) 1.43%, and in wild cats (Felis silvestris) 7.69%. No adult heartworm specimens were found in beech martens (Martes foina)

[Histoplasmosis in two badgers (Meles meles) in northern Germany].

An infection with Histoplasma capsulatum was diagnosed in two wild badgers (Meles meles) in northern Germany, which was predominantly localized in the skin and the regional lymph nodes. The yeast-like fungi were identified in tissue sections using histological and immunohistological methods.

First report of Trichinella nativa in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) from Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan.

Forty-three red foxes (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) and nine raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) were captured in Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan and examined by muscle digestion for the presence of Trichinella sp. larvae. Of the foxes, five (11.6%) were positive for larvae of Trichinella nativa while none of the raccoon dogs were found to be positive. This finding suggests that the red foxes are important reservoir hosts of sylvatic trichinellosis in Otaru, Hokkaido. This is the first report on Trichinella nativa in wild red foxes of Hokkaido, Japan.

Dermatophyte infections in free-ranging Florida panthers (Felis concolor coryi).

Three free-ranging Florida panthers (Felis concolor coryi) were diagnosed with clinical dermatophytosis; two were infected with Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and one was infected with Microsporum gypseum. Two of these panthers were juvenile males that were diagnosed with focal to focally coalescing dermatophytosis; one caused by M. gypseum and the other by T. mentagrophytes. These animals were not treated, and clinical signs resolved spontaneously over 6 mo. The third panther, an adult male from southern Florida, presented with a diffuse dermatophytosis due to T. mentagrophytes infection. Initi

Toxoplasmosis in a bobcat (Felis rufus).

A bobcat (Felis rufus) estimated to be 6-mo old exhibited head pressing, stupor, intermittent seizures, and vocalization. Based on gross and histopathologic features, it was diagnosed to have severe focally extensive protozoal meningoencephalitis. Toxoplasma gondii was confirmed as the etiologic agent by an avidin-biotin immunohistochemical test. This is the first report of clinical toxoplasmosis in a free-ranging bobcat.

Ultrastructure of the ferret sublingual gland.

The sublingual glands of 2 male and 2 female adult ferrets were examined using electron microscopy. The secretory end piece consisted of mucous tubules, serous and mixed acini. The mucous cells showed two different types of granules. The serous cells contained electron-dense secretory granules. The duct system entirely comprised excretory ducts.
