Cauda equina syndrome treated by lumbosacral stabilisation in a cat.

In this case report, a case of cauda equina syndrome arising from lumbosacral disease in an eight-year-old Burmese cat is described. The cat had a history of chronic right pelvic limb lameness. Neurological evaluation was consistent with a lesion involving the cauda equina. Radiographic findings were consistent with a diagnosis of lumbosacral disease. Due to perceived dorsoventral lumbosacral instability, dorsal decompression and stabilisation of the lumbosacral junction was performed. An original method of spinal stabilisation for this indication is described. The cat had a successful long-te…

A review of imaging techniques for canine cauda equina syndrome.

There are many imaging modalities available for evaluating the canine lumbosacral region. These include conventional radiography, stress radiography, myelography, epidurography, transosseous and intravenous venography, discography, linear tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Myelography, epidurography and discography are commonly used, but often lack sensitivity. Myelography is of little value when evaluating the cauda equina because the dural sac is elevated from the vertebral canal floor and frequently ends before the lumbosacral junction. Epidurography will ident

[Cauda equina syndromes in ankylosing spondyloarthritis, detected urologically].

The authors stress the importance of sphincter disorders especially bladder, in these patients. These disorders may compromise the vital prognosis. An accurate neuro-urological work-up is absolutely necessary. It will guide the functional rehabilitation. Which, as a rule, will improve the patients' comfort and prevent the occurrence of urinary complications, with the use, as in the case reported, of non-sterile intermittent self-catheterization.

Does a history of lumbar spine surgery predict radiological cauda equina compression in patients undergoing MRI for suspected cauda equina syndrome?

Background: The clinical symptoms and signs of Cauda equina syndrome (CES) are non specific and poorly predictive of cauda equina compression on MRI. We aimed to establish whether a history of lumbar spine surgery predicts cauda equina compression on MRI in those presenting with suspected CES.Methods: A retrospective electronic record review was undertaken of 276 patients referred with clinically suspected CES who underwent a lumbosacral spine MRI. Those with a history of prior lumbar surgery were compared to those without. The likelihood of cauda equina compression was compared between the tw…

Misplaced intraspinal venous stent causing cauda equina syndrome: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Endovenous stents for deep venous thrombosis treatment can be unintentionally placed in the spinal canal, resulting in neurological deficit. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a patient presenting to our institution with intraspinal misplacement of an endovenous stent, resulting in cauda equina syndrome. The authors also performed a systematic literature review, evaluating the few previously reported cases. This review was performed according to the updated Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. In four of five cases describing ste…

Dural ectasia with cauda equina syndrome, a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dural ectasia, which is often idiopathic, is seen both in patients with neurofibromatosis and Marfan's syndrome. In neurofibromatosis, the ectasia is most often seen in the thoracic region but can occur at any point along the dura. A complication such as cauda equina syndrome is usually rare. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 48 year old male complaining of recurrent throbbing headache, for 3 years, 2 years ago he developed progressively lower back pain, associated with numbness and tingling sensation of the lower limbs. A year ago he experienced defecation and urinary inc…

Transanal irrigation bowel routine for people with Cauda Equina Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Neurologic bowel incontinence and dysfunction are common with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES). The study objective was to evaluate the efficacy of Peristeen Anal Irrigation System (PAIS)TM in people with CES. DESIGN: Clinical Trial. SETTING: Spinal Cord Rehabilitation outpatient clinic at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. METHODS: Twelve participants with a mean age of 46.2 years (range 34-72 years, 4 females) with CES used PAISTM bowel routine for 10 weeks. OUTCOME MEASURES: Change in Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction Score (NBD) over 10 weeks relative to baseline. Secondary outco…

Full Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy Versus Laminectomy for Cauda Equina Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Typically, open surgery is advocated for cauda equina patients. The goal of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of full endoscopic lumbar discectomy and laminectomy in the treatment of cauda equina syndrome (CES) caused by lumbar disc herniation. METHODS: Forty-three patients with CES either underwent endoscopic or laminectomy surgery from May 2015 to April 2016, and data were collected and retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the surgical methods: the endoscopy group (with 21 patients, 14 males and 7 females, and an average ag…

Contained ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm presenting as cauda equina syndrome.

This is the case report of a contained ruptured aortic aneurysm presenting with acute cauda equina syndrome. The patient was a 79-year-old man. A literature search revealed various unusual presentations of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), including femoral neuropathy, hip pain and others; however, there are no other reports of cauda equina-like syndrome. The present case is therefore another unusual presentation of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm and reiterates the utmost importance of careful history taking and clinical examination. Abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture should always be consid…

Assessment of cauda equina syndrome progression pattern to improve diagnosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Meta-analysis of individual patient data. OBJECTIVE: To date, the progression pattern of cauda equina syndrome (CES) has not been summarized. This study assessed individual patient data from CES cases, investigated the CES progression pattern to help clinicians provide timely diagnoses. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Because there were few randomized controlled trials about CES, our research was based on case reports of CES with detailed medical history. METHODS: We searched English literature regarding CES in the PubMed database. We included a total of 198 publications involving…

Acute cauda equina syndrome secondary to a lumbar synovial cyst.

Cauda equina syndrome is a well described state of neurologic compromise due to lumbosacral root compression. In most cases, it is due to a herniated disc, tumor, infection, or hematoma. We report a case of rapid lumbar synovial cyst expansion leading to acute cauda equina syndrome and compare it to similar cases in the literature. The patient is a 49-year-old woman with a history of chronic low back pain who developed cauda equina syndrome. Serial lumbar magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrated a significant increase in the size of a lumbar synovial cyst over a 2 week interval. After a…

Case report: cauda equina syndrome associated with an interspinous device.

BACKGROUND: Although postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is not uncommon, hematomas that require surgery are rare. Cauda equina syndrome (CES) may be associated with postoperative SEH. In these cases, early recognition and emergency decompression can prevent further damage and better neurologic recovery. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 41-year-old man underwent two-level discectomy with insertion of an interspinous spacer at L3-4 and L4-5 because of low back pain and radiculopathy. Eight hours after the operation, the patient developed CES. MRI revealed SEH compressing posteriorly at the L3-4 le…
