Consent, capacity and compliance in concussion management: cave ergo medicus (let the doctor beware).

While the acute effects of concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) are well understood, the certainty in the medical literature regarding the long-term outcomes of sports-related concussion is limited. Long-term deficits that may result from single, repeated concussions, and possibly subconcussive impacts, include cognitive dysfunction, depression and executive dysfunction. Perhaps most troublingly, repetitive head impacts have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), although the precise risk of long-term consequences remains unknow

Chemotrophic profiling of prokaryotic communities thriving on organic and mineral nutrients in a submerged coastal cave.

The geothermal system of the Salento peninsula (Italy) is characterized by the presence of many hydrogen sulfide-rich underground waters and thermal springs. We focused our attention on the submerged section of Zinzulùsa (Castro, Italy), a cave of both naturalistic and archaeological interest. In pioneer studies, some hypotheses about the origin of the sulfurous waters of this area were proposed. The most accredited one is that sulfate-enriched waters of marine origin infiltrate deep along bands with greater permeability, and warm-up going upwards, due to the geothermal gradient. During their

Art, the visual imagination and neuroscience: The Chauvet Cave, Mona Lisa's smile and Michelangelo's terribilitá.

This paper considers several types of imagination relevant to art historical enquiry. These are exemplified in artistic expressions ranging from palaeolithic paintings in the Chauvet Cave, to drawings, sculptures and buildings designed by Michelangelo and drawings and paintings by Leonardo, and are related to recent neuroscientific discoveries. From this it emerges that important types of imagination cannot be understood without an appreciation of the neural processes that underlie them and especially without an acknowledgement of the importance of neurochemistry.

[Chondroma adjacent to Meckel's cave mimicking a fifth cranial nerve neurinoma. A case report].

Cranial chondromas are tumours arising from chondrocyte embryonic remnants cells that usually appear in the skull base synchondrosis. In contrast to the rest of the organism, where chondroid tumours are the most common primary bone tumour just behind the haematopoietic lineage ones, they are a rarity at cranial level, with an incidence of less than 1% of intracranial tumours. The case is reported on a 42 year-old male referred to our clinic due to the finding of an extra-axial lesion located close to the Meckel's cave region, with extension to the posterior fossa and brainstem compression afte

Spectroscopic parameters of the cuticle and ethanol extracts of the fluorescent cave isopod Mesoniscusgraniger (Isopoda, Oniscidea).

The body surface of the terrestrial isopod Mesoniscusgraniger (Frivaldsky, 1863) showed blue autofluorescence under UV light (330-385 nm), using epifluorescence microscopy and also in living individuals under a UV lamp with excitation light of 365 nm. Some morphological cuticular structures expressed a more intense autofluorescence than other body parts. For this reason, only the cuticle was analyzed. The parameters of autofluorescence were investigated using spectroscopic methods (molecular spectroscopy in infrared, ultraviolet-visible, fluorescence, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) in sa

Late Pleistocene carnivores (Carnivora: Mammalia) from a cave sedimentary deposit in northern Brazil.

The Brazilian Quaternary terrestrial Carnivora are represented by the following families: Canidae, Felidae, Ursidae, Procyonidae Mephitidae and Mustelidae. Their recent evolutionary history in South America is associated with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus, and which enabled the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Here we present new fossil records of Carnivora found in a cave in Aurora do Tocantins, Tocantins, northern Brazil. A stratigraphical controlled collection in the sedimentary deposit of the studied cave revealed a fossiliferous level where the following Carnivora taxa wer

Environmentally acceptable effect of hydrogen peroxide on cave "lamp-flora", calcite speleothems and limestones.

Mosses, algae, and cyanobacteria (lamp-flora) colonize illuminated areas in show caves. This biota is commonly removed by a sodium hypochlorite solution. Because chlorine and other deleterious compounds are released into a cave environment during lamp-flora cleansing, hydrogen peroxide was tested as an alternative agent. In a multidisciplinary study conducted in the Kateinská Cave (Moravian Karst, Czech Republic), 12 algae- and cyanobacteria taxons and 19 moss taxons were detected. The threshold hydrogen peroxide concentration for the destruction of this lamp-flora was found to be 15 vol.%. Ba

Additional human remains from Blombos Cave, South Africa: (1999-2000 excavations).

The uppermost Middle Stone Age (MSA) layers at Blombos Cave contain high densities of Still Bay bifacial points. Information from other regional sites places the Still Bay prior to the Howiesons Poort industry, which has been dated at 65-70 ka. The Blombos Cave MSA strata have yielded nine human teeth or dental fragments. Four that were recovered during the 1997-1998 excavations have been published elsewhere. The remaining five were discovered during the 1999-2000 field seasons; these are described here. Three of the new specimens are deciduous teeth, and two are permanent premolar and molar c

Estimation of stature from the skeletal reconstruction of an immature Neandertal from Dederiyeh cave, Syria.

Skeletal reconstruction of a child Neandertal unearthed at Dederiyeh Cave, Syria in 1993, is undertaken and the acquired stature discussed. Although the skeletal remains were well preserved, the reconstruction required several assumptions to be made because of the immature status of the specimen. The assumptions were mainly concerned with distances between bones in the inter-vertebral spaces and in the joints of the hip, knee, and ankle. These were estimated from X-ray films of modern children and data from previous studies. Stature was directly measured on the reconstruction, and found to be

Dated co-occurrence of Homo erectus and Gigantopithecus from Tham Khuyen Cave, Vietnam.

Tham Khuyen Cave (Lang Son Province, northern Vietnam) is one of the more significant sites to yield fossil vertebrates in east Asia. During the mid-1960s, excavation in a suite of deposits produced important hominoid dental remains of middle Pleistocene age. We undertake more rigorous analyses of these sediments to understand the fluvial dynamics of Pleistocene cave infilling as they determine how skeletal elements accumulate within Tham Khuyen and other east Asian sites. Uranium/thorium series analysis of speleothems brackets the Pleistocene chronology for breaching, infilling, and exhuming

[Studies on the bionomics of Phlebotomus chinensis in mountain cave and its relation to control in northern Sichuan].

After a survey of the gonotrophic cycle of 5147 female Phlebotomus chinensis collected from the caves in the mountain area 1500 m above sea level in Nanping County, Sichuan Province where this sandfly was proved to be the typical predominant wild species living mostly in the wild cave at a very high density, a large cave was sprayed with alphamethrin at a dosage of 50 mg/m2 in July, 1993. As a result, the sandfly density dropped to zero spanning over a period of two peak seasons. The authors consider that the residual effect of alphamethrin as long enough to suppress sandfly density in the cav

Mycobiome of the bat white nose syndrome affected caves and mines reveals diversity of fungi and local adaptation by the fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus (Geomyces) destructans.

Current investigations of bat White Nose Syndrome (WNS) and the causative fungus Pseudogymnoascus (Geomyces) destructans (Pd) are intensely focused on the reasons for the appearance of the disease in the Northeast and its rapid spread in the US and Canada. Urgent steps are still needed for the mitigation or control of Pd to save bats. We hypothesized that a focus on fungal community would advance the understanding of ecology and ecosystem processes that are crucial in the disease transmission cycle. This study was conducted in 2010-2011 in New York and Vermont using 90 samples from four mines

In Situ Ultraviolet Fluorescence Spectroscopy for the Characterization of Translucent Calcite Coatings over Prehistoric Cave Art.

The conservation of prehistoric cave art involves complex taphonomic processes such as the formation of calcium carbonate coatings. Often invisible to the naked eye, these deposits are essential for understanding the evolution of the artworks and monitoring their preservation. While few noninvasive techniques probe the concretion layers, this work explores the potential of ultraviolet fluorescence to characterize calcite veils in the Chauvet cave, an Upper Paleolithic site displaying some of the oldest drawings known to date. Here, we show this technique is capable of distinguishing limestone

Oral taste preferences and food-handling behaviour in the cave morph of Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus.

Since its discovery in 1936, the cave morph of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, has become a promising model for studies of compensatory adaptation. The loss of vision has driven the adaptive evolution of sensory systems in the cave morph. Studies of the gustatory system have mainly focused on the morphology and distribution of taste buds, but the functional aspects of this system remain unknown. In the present study, oral taste preferences of the cave morph of A. mexicanus were identified for the first time. Using a behavioural assay, it was found that more than half of the 21 proteinog

Elevated mercury accumulation and inefficient biomagnification in subterranean streams: Insights from karst cave ecosystems.

Karst cave ecosystems, characterized by their isolation, absence of light, and limited food resources, represent unique environments where mercury (Hg) accumulation and biomagnification remain largely unknown. This study investigates the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) within aquatic food webs of karst cave stream ecosystems in Southwest China. The results indicated significantly elevated Hg concentrations in cave-dwelling organisms, with THg levels ranging from 104 to 1732 ng g-1 and MeHg levels ranging from 22.0 to 624 ng g-1. Notably, bas

Cranial Findings of Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Hyaenidae, Carnivora) from the Taurida Cave (Crimea, Early Pleistocene).

Cranial materials of the large hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Gervais, 1850) from the Early Pleistocene (~1.8-1.6 Ma) locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea) belong to individuals of different individual ages, from juvenile to senile. The relative facial length of the "short-faced hyena" P. brevirostris has been shown to be greater than that of the recent spotted hyena Crocuta сrocuta (Erxleben, 1777). As P. brevirostris matured, the facial and frontal regions increased significantly in height, and the dorsal profile line of the skull elevated noticeably. New material on P. brevirostris is of

Superior eyelid lateral transorbital approach for resection of a Meckel's cave schwannoma: how I do it.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal schwannomas are rare, benign, slow-growing nerve sheath tumors. Endoscopic Transorbital Approach (ETOA) utilization has gained traction in recent years. METHOD: The authors present a surgical video demonstrating the ETOA technique for resection of a Meckel's cave schwannoma with cavernous sinus extension via a superior eyelid incision, with relevant surgical anatomy discussed. CONCLUSION: In carefully selected patients, the ETOA is a safe and effective minimally invasive surgical option that can address lesions involving the Meckel's cave and cavernous sinus.
