Ritacestus gen. n. (Cestoda: Proteocephalidea) and redescription of R. ritaii comb. n., a parasite of Rita rita (Siluriformes) in India.

A new genus, Ritacestus, is proposed to accommodate Ritacestus ritaii (Verma, 1926) comb. n. (syn. Proteocephalus ritaii), a parasite of the catfish Rita rita (Hamilton) in India. The new genus, which is placed in the Gangesiinae, is characterized by (i) a small, subspherical scolex formed by four large lobes separated from one another by longitudinal grooves, with a large, widely oval to pyriform rostellum-like apical organ, larger than suckers and possessing an apical hemispherical depression; (ii) paramuscular and cortical position of some vitelline follicles (most follicles are situated me

Water balance and its relation to fermentation acid production in the intestinal parasites Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda) and Moniliformis moniliformis (Acanthocephala).

Water balance and its relation to carbohydrate metabolism was examined in Hymenolepis diminuta in parallel with the putative osmoconformer Moniliformis moniliformis. Worms were removed from rat intestines, weighed, and incubated (37 C) 1 hr in rat serum and various salines, some with mannitol to vary osmotic concentration from 150 to 400 mOsm/L. Worms were removed at 15-min intervals, weighed, and returned to the test solution. Rat serum and a Ringer's saline (pH 7.4 and 300 mOsm/L) with or without 5 mM glucose were isotonic to M. moniliformis, which behaved like an osmometer, shrinking, or sw

A new species of the genus Monoecocestus (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from Lagidium viscacia (Rodentia: Chinchillidae) from the high-altitudes of Peru.

Anoplocephalidae (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) is a diverse family, with the subfamily Anoplocephalinae comprising 59 genera that primarily parasitize the digestive tract of rodents and birds. Monoecocestus threlkeldi was originally described from the northern vizcacha, Lagidium peruanum, in Junin, Peru, and subsequently reported in cricetids (Holochilus spp.) in Argentina and Bolivia. In the present study, we describe a new species of the genus Monoecocestus parasitizing the southern vizcacha, Lagidium viscacia, based on specimens collected in Puno, Peru, at an elevation of 3932 m a. s. l. A tota…

SPATIO-TEMPORAL VARIATION OF PROCHRISTIANELLA SP. (CESTODA: TRYPANORHYNCHA) IN THE HOST OCTOPUS MAYA (CEPHALOPODA: OCTOPODA) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE REPRODUCTION.

Although harvest of Octopus maya (Mexican four-eyed octopus) is one of the most important fisheries in the Yucatan Peninsula, little is known about the parasites of these cephalopods and how they affect host physiological processes. We analyzed the spatio-temporal variation of infection of O. maya by the cestode larva Prochristianella sp. (found in the anterior salivary glands) and its relationship with the gonad development stages (GDSs) of the host. From August 2009 to May 2010, 439 specimens of O. maya were caught in 2 localities on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula: Dzilam de Bra

Diversity and phylogenetic relationships of 'tetraphyllidean' Clade 3 (Cestoda) based on new material from orectolobiform sharks in Australia and Taiwan.

In an effort to expand knowledge of Clade 3-one of the ten clades that compose the non-monophyletic order 'Tetraphyllidea' all current members of which parasitise orectolobiform sharks-we targeted species of orectolobiform sharks that had not previously been examined for 'tetraphyllidean' cestodes. That work led to the discovery of three new species off Australia and Taiwan. Ambitalveolus gen. n. was erected to accommodate these species. Ambitalveolus costelloae gen. n. et sp. n., Ambitalveolus kempi sp. n., and Ambitalveolus penghuensis sp. n. differ from one another in scolex size, genital p

Humoral immune factors modulated by copper and chitosan in healthy or parasitised carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) by Ptychobothrium sp. (Cestoda).

As an environmental protection point of view, the potential toxicity of chitosan on aquatic animal health, alone or associated with copper must be investigated. Fish possess defence mechanisms to counteract the impact of toxics. The non-cellular and non-specific immune defences (total immunoglobulin, ceruloplasmin, lysozyme and potential killing activity of phagocytic cells) can be modulated by the potential environmental pollutants but also by natural stimulants such as bacteria, viruses or parasites. In this study, we investigate the potential toxicity of copper (0.1 and 0.25 mg/L) or chitos

Modification of cellular immunity by Taenia multiceps (Cestoda): accessory macrophages and CD4+ lymphocytes are affected by two different coenurus factors.

Taenia multiceps coenurus fluid was analysed by fast protein liquid chromatography in order to separate the factors responsible for previously reported modification of immunological activity in macrophages and T-cells. One factor, F7, was found to be mitogenic for murine L3T4+ T-cells, to be macrophage dependent, to require macrophage compatibility at the I region of the H2 complex, to increase the sensitivity of T-cells to regulatory signals from macrophages and to increase the rate of generation of splenic rosette-forming cells (RFC) against sheep red cells. A second factor, F24, was found t

Non-lethal detection of Eubothrium crassum (Cestoda) in farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, using anal swabs and real-time PCR.

Detection of intestinal parasites in fish typically requires autopsy, resulting in the sacrifice of the fish. Here, we describe a non-lethal method for detecting the tapeworm Eubothrium crassum in fish using anal swabs and real-time PCR detection. Two assays were developed to detect cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial DNA and 18S ribosomal DNA sequences of E. crassum, respectively. The assays were tested on swab samples from confirmed pathogen free Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and on samples from farmed Atlantic salmon, where the presence and intensity of parasites had been establishe

Molecular identification larvae of Onchobothrium antarcticum (Cestoda: Tetraphyllidea) from marbled rockcod, Notothenia rossii, in Admiralty Bay (King George Island, Antarctica).

Antarctic bony fishes are infected with cestode larvae belonging to the order Tetraphyllidea (parasites as adults in chondrichthyans). Larvae of the Tetraphyllidea differ from each other in the morphology of their scoleces and represent five forms. There are larvae with bothridia subdivided into one, two and three loculi, bothridia sac-like in shape and bothridia undivided with hook-like projections. Only one species of the family Onchobothriidae, Onchobothrium antarcticum, has been described from Antarctica and larvae with trilocular bothridia were assigned to this cestode species. In this st

New circumscription of freshwater fish parasites Monobothrium diesing, 1863 and Promonobothrium mackiewicz, 1968 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) using morphological and molecular evidence.

Two genera of caryophyllidean cestodes, Monobothrium Diesing, 1863 and Promonobothrium Mackiewicz, 1968 , from cypriniform fishes (cyprinids and suckers) in the Holarctic Region, are revised using morphological and molecular evidence. Monobothrium, which includes morphologically distinct species that occur in European cyprinids (Cyprinidae) and North American suckers (Catostomidae), is separated into 3 genera. Monobothrium becomes monotypic and is represented by its type species, Monobothrium wageneri Nybelin, 1922 , which occurs in European tench, Tinca tinca (Cyprinidae). Monobothrium auricu

First report of Taenia arctos (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis) and black bears (Ursus americanus) in North America.

The cestode Taenia arctos was found at necropsy in the small intestine of a grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis) and a black bear (Ursus americanus) from Kananaskis Country in southwestern Alberta, Canada. The autolysis of the tapeworm specimens precluded detailed morphological characterization of the parasites but molecular analysis based on mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene confirmed their identity as T. arctos. This is the first report of T. arctos from definitive hosts in North America. Its detection in Canadian grizzly and black bears further supports the Holarctic distri
