Flavonoids extracted from fonio millet (Digitaria exilis) reveal potent antithyroid properties.

Digitaria exilis (fonio) is a tiny variety of millet commonly eaten by inhabitants of semiarid regions. A sample of fonio collected right in the middle of a severely iodine-depleted goitrous endemic was submitted to phytochemical investigations in order to assess the potential contributory roles played by vegetable molecules to the goitrogenic processes. The total content of flavonoids amounts to 500 mg/kg of the edible whole cereal grains. Their extraction and identification fail to detect the C-glycosylflavones described in other millet varieties but point out the presence of apigenin (A = 1

In vivo and in vitro percutaneous absorption of cancer preventive flavonoid apigenin in different vehicles in mouse skin.

PURPOSE: In vivo and in vitro percutaneous absorption of apigenin was investigated in three vehicles previously used in cancer prevention studies to determine the drug delivery properties for optimal chemo-preventive activity. METHODS: In vivo percutaneous absorption of apigenin on SENCAR mice was studied with DMSO and acetone/DMSO (A/D, 4:1) vehicle. In vitro percutaneous absorption studies used whole mouse skin, without subcutaneous fat, mounted on Franz diffusion cells with 37 degrees C Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline as the receptor fluid. The skin was treated with [G-3H]-apigenin in

EFFECTIVENESS OF COMPOSED HERBAL EXTRACT IN THE TREATMENT OF GINGIVITIS AND ORAL AND PHARYNGEAL MUCOSA - REVIEW OF STUDIES.

Intensive studies on properties of synthetic compounds are simultaneously conducted with studies on the effectiveness and safety of drugs derived from natural compounds. These drugs have been effectively used for years in dentistry, in treatment of inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity and in laryngology, in treatment of pharyngeal inflammatory conditions. The subject of this article is a compilation of studies conducted on medicinal products containing composed ethanolic extract as an active substance, and obtained from: chamomile capitulum (Matricaria recutita L.), oak bark (Quercus spp…

Comparing the efficacy of topical interventions for pain management in oral lichen planus: a time-stratified bayesian network analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of short-term pain relief provided by newly developed drugs for the treatment of oral lichen planus is currently … cacy in pain control and sign score improvement. Topical laser therapy and plant-based agents (e.g. Chamomile) emerged as effective alternatives, particularly for early-to-mid stage symptom management. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the evidence, highly effective topical corticosteroids are preferred, and immunosuppressants can be used when corticosteroids are inef …

Laboratory assessment of the acaricidal, repellent and anti-cholinesterase effects of Melaleuca alternifolia and Chamaemelum nobile essential oils against Hyalomma scupense ticks.

In cattle, Hyalomma scupense serves as an important vector of several pathogens resulting in diseases, subsequently affecting the agricultural field as well as the economy. Resistance to chemical acaricides has become widespread affirming the need for new drugs to tick control. The goal of this study was to investigate the acaricidal, repellent activities as well as the putative mode of action of two essential oils (EOs) from Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea tree) and Chamaemelum nobile (Roman chamomile) on Hyalomma scupense. The chemical composition of EOs was also evaluated. Different concentrati…

Essential Oil of Matricaria chamomilla Alleviate Psoriatic-Like Skin Inflammation by Inhibiting PI3K/Akt/mTOR and p38MAPK Signaling Pathway.

BACKGROUND: The traditional Matricaria chamomilla L. has been used to treat dermatitis for thousands of years. Due to emerging trends in alternative medicine, patients prefer natural remedies to relieve their symptoms. Therefore, finding safe and effective plant medicines for topical applications on the skin is an important treatment strategy for dermatologists. German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) from the Compositae family is a famous medicinal plant, often known as the "star of medicinal species."However, the function of Matricaria chamomilla essential oil on skin inflammation has no…

Immunomodulatory effects of new phytotherapy on human macrophages and TLR4- and TLR7/8-mediated viral-like inflammation in mice.

BACKGROUND: While all efforts have been undertaken to propagate the vaccination and develop remedies against SARS-CoV-2, no satisfactory management of this infection is available yet. Moreover, poor availability of any preventive and treatment measures of SARS-CoV-2 in economically disadvantageous communities aggravates the course of the pandemic. Here, we studied a new immunomodulatory phytotherapy (IP), an extract of blackberry, chamomile, garlic, cloves, and elderberry as a potential low-cost solution for these problems given the reported efficacy of herbal medicine during the previous SARS…

Modulation of androgen and progesterone receptors by phytochemicals in breast cancer cell lines.

We have used a tissue culture system based on breast carcinoma cell lines to investigate a large number of naturally occurring compounds and beverages for steroid hormone agonist and antagonist activity. The cell lines used, T-47D and BT-474, produce prostate specific antigen (PSA) upon stimulation with androgens, progestins, glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. This biomarker is secreted and can be measured in the tissue culture supernatant with very high sensitivity by an immunofluorometric procedure. Steroid hormone antagonist activity can be assessed with the same system by adding the c

Tolerability and benefit of a tetramethoxyluteolin-containing skin lotion.

As many as 40% of people have sensitive skin and at least half of them suffer from pruritus associated with allergies, atopic dermatitis (AD), chronic urticaria (CU), cutaneous mastocytosis (CM), and psoriasis. Unfortunately, the available topical formulations contain antihistamines that are often not as effective as those containing corticosteroids. Certain natural flavonoids have anti-inflammatory actions. We recently reported that the natural flavonoid tetramethoxyluteolin has potent antiallergic and anti-inflammatory actions in vitro and in vivo. This flavonoid was formulated in a skin lot

Promising preventive and therapeutic effects of TaibUVID nutritional supplements for COVID-19 pandemic: towards better public prophylaxis and treatment (A retrospective study).

Adjuvant nutritional treatment is a commonly overlooked topic when treating lethal viral diseases as COVID-19 pandemic. We recently introduced TaibUVID nutritional supplements (nigella sativa, chamomile and natural honey) as adjuvants for COVID-19 contacts, patients and public prophylaxis. TaibUVID Forte adds costus, senna and fennel to TaibUVID. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews confirmed evidence-based therapeutic benefits of TaibUVID components in treating many human diseases e.g. diabetes mellitus and hypertension, common co-morbidities in COVID-19 patients. Double-blind clinical trials…
