The degree of protection to Cryptosporidium baileyi in the progeny of infected chickens was studied. Hens at the beginning of their laying period were given orally three consecutive, large doses of C. baileyi oocysts at weekly intervals. The infection became patent after 6 days and lasted for another 6 days. Increasing serum IgG, and serum, bile, lachrymal and salivary IgA were demonstrated from their samples. Experimental scoliosis with the potential for marked progression was treated by rib resection without spinal fusion to investigate the corrective effect of rib resection on progressive scoliosis. Forty chickens were divided into two groups (groups A and B) and pinealectomy was performed at 3 days of age. BACKGROUND: Omeprazole, a long-acting inhibitor of gastric acid secretion, is able to increase the circulating concentrations of gastrin. Daily treatment with high doses of omeprazole cause sustained hypergastrinemia. Long-standing hypergastrinemia can be expected to exert numerous effects in the body. Melatonin (0.1-1.0 mg/kg) reduced isolation-induced distress vocalizations (DVs) in young domestic chickens in a dose-dependent manner. This effect was unaffected by the administration of d-amphetamine (1.0 mg/kg) suggesting that melatonin's effects were not merely due to fatigue. The effect of restricted medication with lasalocid sodium on the development of acquired immunity against Eimeria tenella was evaluated. The medication was allowed for all or part of 6-day test period (one day before until 4 days after infection). The parameters used for such evaluations were lesion score, caecal, bursal and splenic weights. Three-day-old chicks and 11-12 day embryonated eggs were inoculated with 100 BMLD50 (baby mouse lethal doses) of Runde virus. Chicks were infected subcutaneously and eggs in the allantoic or amniotic cavities, in the yolk sac, or on the chorioallantoic membrane. "Runde" virus produced viraemia and antibody responses in 3-day-old chicks. The virus multiplied only in the amniotic cavity of the embryonated eggs and was detected in the brains of the embryos from day 5-9 p.i. Out of five eggs left to hatch, two hatched on time, while in three unhatched eggs the chicks were alive but extremely weak.

A sex-linked dwarf strain of chickens fed a practical chick starter had a high incidence of rickets while other strains, including the Cornell K strain reared under the same conditions, had no evidence of this disease. For 164 days mature chickens received a daily diet containing 40 g of wheat treated with organomercurial fungicide and 80 g of untreated diet. A control group received 120 g of normal diet daily.
