Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk for school dropout. This study examined pathways from childhood adversity to school dropout through academic, behavioral, emotional, and social pathways. When a healthy infant dies suddenly and unexpectedly, it is critical to correctly determine if the death was caused by child abuse or neglect. Sudden unexpected infant deaths should be comprehensively investigated, ancillary tests and forensic procedures should be used to more-accurately identify the cause of death, and parents deserve to be approached in a nonaccusatory manner during the investigation. INTRODUCTION: Arterial dissection and stroke following trauma are seen frequently. Although similar mechanisms occur for trauma and child abuse, no reports of stroke have been observed in the literature.
CASE REPORTS: Two patients successively presented to our institution with acute onset of neurological deficit and stroke. Further evaluation disclosed child abuse as an underlying condition leading to the strokes. Child protection services were contacted immediately after admission of the patients and further measures were taken.
