New records of ectoparasitic Acari (Arachnida) and Streblidae (Diptera) from bats in Jalisco, Mexico.

Ectoparasites of bats in the Neotropics are diverse and play numerous ecological roles as vectors of microbial pathogens and endoparasites and as food sources for other cave fauna living both on their hosts and in bat roosts. The ectoparasites of bats in Jalisco State of western Mexico have not been as well described as those of other states with recent checklists that have focused primarily on the Yucatan Peninsula. We captured bats from 2011-2015 on the south coast and Sierra de Amula, Jalisco using mist nets, and we removed ectoparasites by hand. We identified 24 species of streblid bat fli

MYOSITIS OSSIFICANS TRAUMATICA IN A VAMPIRE BAT (DESMODUS ROTUNDUS).

A 15-yr-old sexually intact female vampire bat ( Desmodus rotundus ) was diagnosed with myositis ossificans traumatica of the abdominal wall. The bat presented with a large ulcerated firm mass along the abdomen. Radiographs and cytology were performed, followed by surgical exploration. The mass was determined to be nonresectable and the bat was euthanized. Histopathology showed severe necrotizing, degenerative, and pyogranulomatous myositis with osseous and cartilaginous metaplasia, fibrosis, and ulceration, which were consistent with myositis ossificans traumatica. Myositis ossificans traumat

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF THE LESIONS ASSOCIATED WITH IRON STORAGE DISEASE IN CAPTIVE EGYPTIAN FRUIT BATS (ROUSETTUS AEGYPTIACUS).

Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) are one of many species within zoologic collections that frequently develop iron storage disease. The goals of this retrospective multi-institutional study were to determine the tissue distribution of iron storage in captive adult Egyptian fruit bats and the incidence of intercurrent neoplasia and infection, which may be directly or indirectly related to iron overload. Tissue sections from 83 adult Egyptian fruit bats were histologically evaluated by using tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, trichrome, and Prussian blue techniques. Th

Novel Waddlia Intracellular Bacterium in Artibeus intermedius Fruit Bats, Mexico.

An intracellular bacterium was isolated from fruit bats (Artibeus intermedius) in Cocoyoc, Mexico. The bacterium caused severe lesions in the lungs and spleens of bats and intracytoplasmic vacuoles in cell cultures. Sequence analyses showed it is related to Waddlia spp. (order Chlamydiales). We propose to call this bacterium Waddlia cocoyoc.

Vampire bat rabies: ecology, epidemiology and control.

Extensive surveillance in bat populations in response to recent emerging diseases has revealed that this group of mammals acts as a reservoir for a large range of viruses. However, the oldest known association between a zoonotic virus and a bat is that between rabies virus and the vampire bat. Vampire bats are only found in Latin America and their unique method of obtaining nutrition, blood-feeding or haematophagy, has only evolved in the New World. The adaptations that enable blood-feeding also make the vampire bat highly effective at transmitting rabies virus. Whether the virus was present i

Interspecific aggression by a rabid eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis).

On 16 March 2012 a rabid eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis) was found attached to an evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) in Randolph County, Arkansas, USA. This appears to be the first confirmed case of a rabid bat attacking a bat of another species.

Hematologic profile of hematophagous Desmodus rotundus bats before and after experimental infection with rabies virus.

INTRODUCTION: Hematophagous Desmodus rotundus bats play an important role in the rabies lifecycle. This study describes the hematological profile of these bats before and after experimental infection with rabies virus. METHODS: Cells counts were performed in a Neubauer chamber. RESULTS: The average values of erythrocytes and leucocytes counts in blood before experimental infections were 9.97 × 10(6)mm3 and 4.80 × 10(3)mm3, respectively. Neutrophils represented 69.9% of white blood cells and the lymphocytes represented 26.9%. Following the experimental infections, the average numbers of eryth

Rabies in Latin America.

OBJECTIVE: To review and discuss the available literature for rabies control in Latin America. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed through October 2008. Articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese were reviewed. RESULTS: Recent reports indicate that the region is close to achieve the goal of eliminating human rabies transmitted by dogs even though there are some isolated cases reported. However, insectivorous and vampire bats continue to expose humans and animals. These cases have been reported with increasing frequency. DISCUSSION: Many challenges to the successful eradica

Echolocation by the barbastelle bat, Barbastella barbastellus.

When searching for insects along edges, Barbastella barbastellus alternated between two signal types. Type-2 signals had durations around 6 ms and were composed of an initial shallowly downward frequency modulated component, starting at about 45 kHz and followed by a shorter more steeply modulated component that ended at about 32 kHz. Type-1 signals were rather stereotyped with durations around 2.5 ms and a very short rise time. They covered an approximately 8 kHz-wide frequency band positioned just below the 12-15 kHz-wide frequency band of type-2 signals, with no or small frequency overlap.

Babesia sp. in Colombian bats (Microchiroptera).

Two leaf-chinned bats (Mormoops megalophylla) collected in 1963 in central Colombia were heavily infected with Babesia sp., probably Babesia vesperuginis. Both bats had pronounced splenomegaly. This is the first report of a Babesia sp. infection of a bat in the Americas.

Developmental history of nervus terminalis in embryos of insectivorous bats.

Insectivorous bat embryos (Tadarida and Myotis) ranging from 6- to 16-mm C-R length were examined for the presence of the nervus terminalis. These embryos have no vomeronasal nerve with which the nervus terminalis could be confused. The nerve and associated ganglion cells first appear in the 7-mm embryo. As the embryo ages, a gradual increase in nerve size and ganglion cell numbers occurs. In the 13-mm embryo, nerve size and ganglion cell numbers are reduced, and in older embryos both nerve and cells are absent, as in the adult. The ganglion cells arise as clusters from the nasal septal epithe
