Biocompatibility and structural insights of seaweed-derived cellulose scaffolds in a subcutaneous implantation model.

Sustainable biomaterials are essential for advancing tissue engineering. This study investigates the in vivo biocompatibility and regenerative potential of seaweed cellulose (SC) scaffolds derived from Ulva sp. and Cladophora sp. as connective support matrices. SC scaffolds were fabricated using an optimized decellularization process that preserved their distinct porous (Ulva) and fibrous (Cladophora) architectures. Subcutaneous implantation in Sprague-Dawley rats demonstrated minimal foreign body response and successful integration over an eight-week period. Histological analysis revealed arc

Haematococcus pluvialis-Derived Astaxanthin Is a Potential Neuroprotective Agent against Optic Nerve Ischemia.

Astaxanthin, a xanthophyll belonging to the family of carotenoids, is a potent antioxidant. However, much less is known about its protective effects on the oxidative stress of ischemic optic nerve. We hypothesized that astaxanthin treatment could protect retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from death via anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic responses. Adult male Wistar rats were fed astaxanthin (100 mg/kg/day) by daily gavage for seven consecutive days, either before or after inducing oxidative stress in the retina by photodynamic treatment. The visual function, RGC apoptosis, macrophage infiltration i

Metabolites from invasive pests inhibit mitochondrial complex II: A potential strategy for the treatment of human ovarian carcinoma?

The red pigment caulerpin, a secondary metabolite from the marine invasive green algae Caulerpa cylindracea can be accumulated and transferred along the trophic chain, with detrimental consequences on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Despite increasing research efforts to understand how caulerpin modifies fish physiology, little is known on the effects of algal metabolites on mammalian cells. Here we report for the first time the mitochondrial targeting activity of both caulerpin, and its closely related derivative caulerpinic acid, by using as experimental model rat liver mitochondria,

Validation trial of Japan's zinc water quality standard for aquatic life using field data.

This study sought to validate Japan's zinc water quality standard for aquatic life (algae and benthic invertebrates) based on field survey data. The effects of zinc on aquatic life, especially algae and benthic invertebrates, were investigated mainly in water areas with upstream basins that contain mines. Seven biological indicators (number of cells or individuals, number of taxa, number of EPT taxa, number of collector-gatherer taxa of benthic invertebrates, and Simpson index, Shannon-Weiner index, and Margalef index for algae and benthic invertebrates) were analyzed with respect to zinc conc

Determination of fifteen priority phenolic compounds in environmental samples from Andalusia (Spain) by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

This work describes the optimisation of a method to determinate fifteen phenolic compounds in waters, sediments and biota (green marine algae) by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) in the negative mode. The LC separations of the studied compounds and their MS parameters were optimised in order to improve selectivity and sensitivity. Separation was carried out with a C(18) column using methanol and 0.005% acid acetic as mobile phase in gradient mode. The molecular ion was selected for the quantitation in selective ion

Synergistic relationships in algal-bacterial microcosms for the treatment of aromatic pollutants.

The potential of algal-bacterial microcosms was studied for the biodegradation of salicylate, phenol and phenanthrene. The isolation and characterization of aerobic bacterial strains capable of mineralizing each pollutant were first conducted. Ralstonia basilensis was isolated for salicylate degradation, Acinetobacter haemolyticus for phenol and Pseudomonas migulae and Sphingomonas yanoikuyae for phenanthrene. The green alga Chlorella sorokiniana was then cultivated in the presence of the pollutants at different concentrations, showing increasing inhibitory effects in the following order: sali

Salicylate biodegradation by various algal-bacterial consortia under photosynthetic oxygenation.

Four green microalgae (Chlorella sorokiniana, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus and Selenastrum capricornutum), a wild Bolivian microalga strain and two cyanobacteria (Anabaena catenula and Microcystis aeruginosa) were compared for tolerance to salicylate, O2 production capacity and ability to support salicylate degradation by a Ralstonia basilensis strain in symbiotic microcosms with the microalgae. Microcystis aeruginosa had the highest tolerance to salicylate at 500 mg l(-1) and 1500 mg l(-1) but only produced 0.7 mg O2 l(-1) h(-1) in the absence of pollutant. Chlorella sorokiniana r

Green seaweed-derived polysaccharides: Insights into various bioactivities for biomedical applications.

This research work explores the physicochemical characteristics and biological functions of polysaccharides extracted from four selected green seaweed species: Ulva lactuca (UL), Halimeda opuntia (HO), Caulerpa racemosa (CR), and Chaetomorpha antennina (CA). The extracts were investigated for cell-based bio-activities (i.e., cytotoxicity, cell proliferation and migration) using three cell lines (HDF, HaCaT, RAW264.7) reflecting cell models involved in wound healing, as well as anticoagulant activity. Ulvans from UL significantly increased HaCaT (at 0.06 μg/μL) and HDF (at 0.5 μg/μL) cell proli

ROS-dependent signalling pathways in plants and algae exposed to high light: Comparisons with other eukaryotes.

Like all aerobic organisms, plants and algae co-opt reactive oxygen species (ROS) as signalling molecules to drive cellular responses to changes in their environment. In this respect, there is considerable commonality between all eukaryotes imposed by the constraints of ROS chemistry, similar metabolism in many subcellular compartments, the requirement for a high degree of signal specificity and the deployment of thiol peroxidases as transducers of oxidising equivalents to regulatory proteins. Nevertheless, plants and algae carry out specialised signalling arising from oxygenic photosynthesis

Acute toxicity of binary and ternary mixtures of Cd, Cu, and Zn to Daphnia magna.

Standard static-exposure acute lethality tests were conducted with Daphnia magna neonates exposed to binary or ternary mixtures of Cd, Cu, and Zn in moderately hard reconstituted water that contained 3 mg dissolved organic carbon/L added as Suwannee River fulvic acid. These experiments were conducted to test for additive toxicity (i.e., the response to the mixture can be predicted by combining the responses obtained in single-metal toxicity tests) or nonadditive toxicity (i.e., the response is less than or greater than additive). Based on total metal concentrations (>90% dissolved) the toxicit

Rhizoid differentiation in Spirogyra: position sensing by terminal cells.

Some species of Spirogyra anchor themselves to the substrate by differentiating rhizoids. A rhizoid is differentiated only from the terminal cell, suggesting that this cell can recognize its terminal position in a filament. In the present study, we have analyzed the mechanism for position sensing by the terminal cell. When a filament is cut, a new cell occupies the terminal position, and three phenomena are induced: (1) the cell wall of the cut cell detaches from the new terminal cell; (2) adhesive material is secreted by the terminal cell; and (3) the terminal cell begins to differentiate a r

A "cryptic" microbial mat: a new model ecosystem for extant life on Mars.

If life were present on Mars to day, it would face potentially lethal environmental conditions such as a lack of water, frigid temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, and soil oxidants. In addition, the Viking missions did not detect near-surface organic carbon available for assimilation. Autotrophic organisms that lived under a protective layer of sand or gravel would be able to circumvent the ultraviolet radiation and lack of fixed carbon. Two terrestrial photosynthetic near-surface microbial communities have been identified, one in the inter- and supertidal of Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Baja Califo

Species Composition and Biomass Dynamics of Filamentous Algae and Their Environmental Drivers in Eriocheir sinensis Aquaculture Ponds.

Filamentous opportunistic algae, which behave as opportunistic species, are frequently observed in Eriocheir sinensis aquaculture ponds. These algae can entangle Eriocheir sinensis and release harmful substances during decomposition, thereby negatively impacting farming performance. At present, their management largely depends on non-selective herbicides, while fundamental research on species composition and biomass dynamics remains limited. In this study, 19 aquaculture ponds across five E. sinensis farms in Shanghai were monitored over a two-year period. Filamentous algae species were identi

Naturally Occurring Microbiota in Dengue Vector Mosquito Breeding Habitats and Their Use as Diet Organisms by Developing Larvae in the Kandy District, Sri Lanka.

Naturally occurring microbiota in mosquito larval habitats are among biotic factors which affect the population dynamics of developing larvae. Many microbiota species serve as food items for vector mosquito larvae, and food limitations within habitats adversely affect larval survival, developmental rate, adult fitness, and thereby vector competence. Therefore, identification of microbiota as associates with larvae reveals their relationship between each other as parasites, pathogens, epibionts, or diet organisms. Analysis of associated microbiota species in the dengue vector larval breeding ha

Potential Pharmacological Ability of a Novel Marine Polysaccharide Extracted from Tunisian Green Algae Chaetomorpha aerea to Accelerate Dermal Wound Healing in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infection and oxidative stress generation are significant obstacles to dermal wound healing. The present study undertakes the isolation of a sulfated polysaccharide from the Tunisian green algal "Chaetomorpha aerea" named PCA. METHODS: The polysaccharide PCA was structurally characterized using Fourier Transformed Infrared (FT-IR), and monosaccharide analysis was carried out by HPLC-FID X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The antioxidant potential of polysaccharides extracted from the Chaetomorpha aerea was evaluated in vitro using various ant

Investigating the role of extracellular polymeric substances produced by Parachlorella kessleri in Zn(II) bioremediation using atomic force microscopy.

Microalgae, such as Parachlorella kessleri, have significant potential for environmental remediation, especially in removing heavy metals like zinc from water. This study investigates how P. kessleri, isolated from a polluted river in Argentina, can remediate zinc. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the research examined the interactions between Zn particles and cells grown with different nitrogen sources-nitrate or ammonium. The results showed that cells grown with nitrate produced extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), while those grown with ammonium did not. Raman spectroscopy revealed

Comparative Toxicity of Chlorinated Saline and Freshwater Wastewater Effluents to Marine Organisms.

Toilet flushing with seawater results in saline wastewater, which may contain approximately 33-50% seawater. Halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), especially brominated and iodinated DBPs, have recently been found in chlorinated saline wastewater effluents. With the occurrence of brominated and iodinated DBPs, the adverse effects of chlorinated saline wastewater effluents to marine ecology have been uncertain. By evaluating the developmental effects in the marine polychaete Platynereis dumerilii directly exposed to chlorinated saline/freshwater wastewater effluents, we found surprisingly

Kinesin molecular motors: transport pathways, receptors, and human disease.

Kinesin molecular motor proteins are responsible for many of the major microtubule-dependent transport pathways in neuronal and non-neuronal cells. Elucidating the transport pathways mediated by kinesins, the identity of the cargoes moved, and the nature of the proteins that link kinesin motors to cargoes are areas of intense investigation. Kinesin-II recently was found to be required for transport in motile and nonmotile cilia and flagella where it is essential for proper left-right determination in mammalian development, sensory function in ciliated neurons, and opsin transport and viability
