Implantation and Evaluation of Melanoma in the Murine Choroid via Optical Coherence Tomography.

Establishing experimental choroidal melanoma models is challenging in terms of the ability to induce tumors at the correct localization. In addition, difficulties in observing posterior choroidal melanoma in vivo limit tumor location and growth evaluation in real-time. The approach described here optimizes techniques for establishing choroidal melanoma in mice via a multi-step sub-choroidal B16LS9 cell injection procedure. To enable precision in injecting into the small dimensions of the mouse uvea, the complete procedure is performed under a microscope. First, a conjunctival peritomy is forme

Late recurrence of choroid plexus carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPC) are rare malignant brain tumours arising from the choroid plexus epithelium. CPC are most common in the paediatric population, particularly those under 2 years of age. Common presentations include headache, diplopia and signs of increased intracranial pressure such as nausea and vomiting. Infants may present with increased head circumference, bulging fontanelles, splayed cranial sutures and/or neurological delay. Diagnosis is made via radiological and histological analysis. MANAGEMENT AND PROGNOSIS: Gross total resection (GTR) is the preferred treat

[Differential diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration and choroidal tumor (a clinical case)].

Differential diagnostics of age-related macular degeneration and choroidal tumor is a challenging task for ophthalmologists. Difficulties arise on various stages during establishing the diagnosis: when interpreting ophthalmoscopic picture, or when evaluating the results of visualization methods. The article describes a clinical case of differential diagnostics of age-related macular degeneration and choroidal tumor. The difficulties emerged when interpreting results of ultrasound examination. Optical coherence tomography helped exclude choroidal tumor.

Idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy masquerading as choroidal tumors: one year follow-up of a peripheral lesion.

This case report describes peripheral idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (IPCV) with a collection of small aneurysmal dilations that masqueraded as choroidal tumors in an elderly patient. A 68-year-old African American woman was referred to us with a suspected diagnosis of asymptomatic vascular choroidal tumor and choroidal capillary hemangioma, affecting the temporal peripheral fundus. Upon examination, optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed two large hemorrhagic pigment epithelium detachments (PED), and indocyanine green angiography (ICG) confirmed the diagnosis of IPCV. One y

AN INFILTRATIVE CHOROIDAL LESION.

PURPOSE: To present a distinctive case of primary choroidal lymphoma diagnosed by choroidal biopsy with myeloid differentiation primary response 88 testing. METHODS: We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with unilateral progressive blurry vision. Fundus examination found a whitish/yellowish infiltrative lesion in the posterior pole with macular edema, which had interval improvement with oral prednisone, followed by worsening on optical coherence tomography with persistent subretinal hyper-reflective materials. RESULTS: Because the initial pars plana vitrectomy/vitreous biopsy and choroid

Nodular Posterior Scleritis With Associated Choroiditis Masquerading As A Choroidal Tumour: A Case Report.

A case of nodular posterior scleritis in a 25-year-old male who presented with a 14-day history of unilateral decline in vision, pain, and redness in his right eye. Slit lamp examination of the right eye revealed dilated episcleral vessels present nasally as well as a choroidal mass at the nasal periphery of the fundus, associated with choroidal oedema. Systemic evaluation and imaging of the choroidal mass were performed to rule out choroidal tuberculoma and choroidal metastasis. Ultrasound B-scan of the right eye showed marked thickening of the nasalsclera resulting in sympathetic choroidal o

Alterations of choroidal circulation and choroidal thickness before and after chemoradiotherapy in a case of metastatic choroidal tumor.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic choroidal tumors are hematogenous intraocular metastases of malignant tumors in systemic organs; however, the details of choroidal circulation and morphological changes in the choroid are unknown. The aim of this study is to present a case of metastatic choroidal tumor and examine laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG)-based choroidal circulation and central choroidal thickness (CCT) before and after chemoradiotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old woman with a medical history of breast cancer 16 years ago was referred to our department struggling with blurred vision in her

Laser treatment for choroidal melanoma: Current concepts.

Laser treatment has offered a relatively nonsurgical alternative for eye, life, and vision-sparing treatment of malignant melanoma of the choroid. Historically, the most commonly used forms of lasers were xenon-arc, argon laser, krypton laser, and the more recent transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Melanomas selected for laser treatment tend to be smaller and visibly accessible, which means these tumors are usually located in the posterior choroid. Laser treatments have been associated with both local tumor destruction and side effects. Unlike radiation therapy,

Malignant melanoma of the choroid associated with spontaneous expulsive choroidal hemorrhage.

A 79-year-old man initially had a perforated corneal ulcer of his blind right eye. The next day a spontaneous expulsive choroidal hemorrhage occurred just before scheduled enucleation. Histopathologic examination of the enucleated eye revealed a severe necrosis of several posterior ciliary arteries in the expulsive choroidal hemorrhage, as well as a large occult spindle B malignant melanoma of the choroid. The necrosis of the posterior ciliary arteries may have been the cause of the choroidal hemorrhage. The finding of an occult malignant melanoma may be more than a chance occurrence of two un

Primary Choroid Plexus Papilloma over Sellar Region Mimicking with Craniopharyngioma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are slow-growing and benign tumors, representing less than 1% of all intracranial neoplasms. They are predominantly located in the lateral ventricles in children, and in the fourth ventricle in adults. Primary CPP over sellar regions is extremely rare. There was previously only one case reported in men. We report the case of a 43-year-old male who initially presented with bilateral temporal hemiapnosia. A brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed heterogenous enhanced mass lesion with cyst component compressing upward onto the optic chiasm. A craniopharyn

Recurrent adult choroid plexus carcinoma treated with high-dose chemotherapy and syngeneic stem cell (bone marrow) transplant.

Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs) are rare epithelial central nervous system tumors. CPC occurs mainly in infants and young children, comprising ≈ 1 to 4% of all pediatric brain neoplasms. There is very limited information available regarding tumor biology and CPC treatment due to its rarity. There have been various case reports and meta-analyses of reported cases with CPC. Surgical resection is often challenging but remains a well-established treatment option. Chemotherapy is often reserved for recurrent or refractory cases, but the goal of treatment is usually palliative. We present a case of

Lateral ventricle tumors in children: a series of 54 cases.

A series of 54 patients with lateral ventricle tumors diagnosed and surgically treated from 1988 to 1998 was reviewed. Neoplasms invading ventricles and originating beyond their walls were excluded. There were 35 male and 19 female patients. Their ages ranged from 15 days to 20 years, and two frequency peaks were observed, one at 2 and one at 11 years. The most frequent signs and symptoms were attributed to increased intracranial pressure. The 54 patients included 41 who developed hydrocephalus, but only 15 of these required shunting. The trigonal region and frontal horn were the most common s

Canine Primary Intracranial Cancer: A Clinicopathologic and Comparative Review of Glioma, Meningioma, and Choroid Plexus Tumors.

In the dog, primary intracranial neoplasia represents ~2-5% of all cancers and is especially common in certain breeds including English and French bulldogs and Boxers. The most common types of primary intracranial cancer in the dog are meningioma, glioma, and choroid plexus tumors, generally occurring in middle aged to older dogs. Much work has recently been done to understand the characteristic imaging and clinicopathologic features of these tumors. The gross and histologic landscape of these tumors in the dog compare favorably to their human counterparts with many similarities noted in histo

Choroid plexus papillomas in two siblings: case report.

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is a rare, benign epithelial brain tumor of the nervous system seen particularly in infants. Familial cases are extremely uncommon. Some other form of malignant tumors was noted in the relatives of patients with CPPs, and some genetic defects regarding this coincidence were reported in the literature. These neoplasms are occasionally bilateral and hydrocephalus is an associated sign in most of the cases. We report three lateral ventricle CPPs in two siblings, at the age of 7 month and 2 years respectively. All tumors were resected with parietotemporal craniotomy

ADAM 10 expression in primary uveal melanoma as prognostic factor for risk of metastasis.

Uveal melanoma is the most frequent primary intraocular neoplasm in adults. Although malignant melanoma may be located at any point in the uveal tract, the choroid and ciliary body are more frequent locations than the iris. In the present study, we examined ADAM10 expression levels in primary uveal melanoma both with and without metastasis, and we evaluated their association with other high risk characteristics for metastasis in order to assess if ADAM10 can be used to predict metastasis. This study included a total of 52 patients, 23 men and 29 women, with uveal melanoma. A significantly high
