Direct evidence for hydroxyl radical-induced damage to nucleic acids by chromium(VI)-derived species: implications for chromium carcinogenesis.

Reduction of Cr(VI) by NADH and NADPH has been shown to yield Cr(V) species, which have been detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The fine structure on the EPR signal of the Cr(V) species is consistent with the presence of two NAD(P)H ligands in a square-pyramidal arrangement with a single oxygen (oxo) group at the apex. Neither this species nor the initial Cr(VI) complex damage DNA components as evidenced by the lack of effect of these compounds on the optical and EPR signals of the Cr(VI) and Cr(V) species respectively. Addition of hydrogen peroxide to the Cr(V) sp

Chromium deficiency, glucose intolerance, and neuropathy reversed by chromium supplementation, in a patient receiving long-term total parenteral nutrition.

A white female, now age 40 and receiving total parenteral nutrition for more than 5 years, developed unexpected 15% weight loss after 3 1/2 … ma leucine. During daily infusion of well over 400 g of glucose, the respiratory quotient was 0.66. Chromium balance was negative. Chromium levels were, in blood 0.55 ng/ml (normal 4.9 to 9.5) and in hair 154 to 175 ng/g (normal greater than 500). Regular insulin daily (45 micron) in the infusate nearly maintained euglycemia but despite this, and even with …

Securing China's chromium supply through circular economy.

Ensuring a stable and sustainable supply of chromium (Cr) has become an important global issue, as many countries rely on imports to meet their demands and Cr plays a vital role in industrial production. This study aims to address such concerns by tracing the Cr flows and stocks along its life cycle in China for the period of 2020-2023 through a dynamic material flow analysis. Scenario analysis is then conducted to project future Cr supply and demand until 2050 under various circular economy strategies. Results indicate that the total Cr flows and stocks increased slightly from 2020 to 2023 du…

Experimental patch testing with chromium-coated materials.

BACKGROUND: Chromium coatings on metal alloys can be decorative, and prevent corrosion and metal ion release. We recently showed that handling of a chromium-containing disc resulted in chromium deposition on the skin. OBJECTIVES: To examine patch test reactivity to chromium-coated discs. METHODS: We included 15 patients: 10 chromium-allergic patients, and 5 patients without chromium allergy. All were patch tested with potassium dichromate, cobalt chloride, nickel sulfate, and nine different metallic discs. The chromium-allergic patients were also patch tested with serial dilutions of potassi…

Chromium(II)-catalyzed enantioselective arylation of ketones.

The chromium-catalyzed enantioselective addition of carbo halides to carbonyl compounds is an important transformation in organic synthesis. However, the corresponding catalytic enantioselective arylation of ketones has not been reported to date. Herein, we report the first Cr-catalyzed enantioselective addition of aryl halides to both arylaliphatic and aliphatic ketones with high enantioselectivity in an intramolecular version, providing facile access to enantiopure tetrahydronaphthalen-1-ols and 2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ols containing a tertiary alcohol.

Hexakis(dimethyl sulfoxide-κO)chromium(III) trichloride.

In the title compound, [Cr(C(2)H(6)OS)(6)]Cl(3), each Cr(III) ion is located on a three-fold inversion axis and is coordinated by six dimethyl-sulfoxide ligands [Cr-O = 1.970 (2)-1.972 (2) Å; O-Cr-O = 88.19 (9) and 91.81 (9)°] in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. The Cl(-) anions take part in the formation of weak C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, which contribute to the crystal packing stabilization.

Chromium-microorganism interactions in soils: remediation implications.

Discharge of Cr waste from many industrial applications such as leather tanning, textile production, electroplating, metallurgy, and petroleum refinery has led to large-scale contamination of land and water. Generally, Cr exists in two stable states: Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III) is not very soluble and is immobilized by precipitation as hydroxides. Cr(VI) is toxic, soluble, and easily transported to water resources. Cr(VI) undergoes rapid reduction to Cr(III), in the presence of organic sources or other reducing compounds as electron donors, to become precipitated as hydroxides. Cr(VI)-reducing

Selected toxicological aspects of chromium(VI) compounds.

Chromium(III) is thought to be an essential element in mammals, its toxicity being very low. On the contrary, chromium (VI) is highly toxic to man, even if its effects are generally local, involving the respiratory tract and the skin. Once absorbed, chromium(VI) is quickly reduced to the trivalent form which accounts for all of this element present in the blood stream or taken up by tissues. As a result, any differences in systemic toxicity can only be attributed to differential solubilities and absorption rates. The kidney should be regarded as the critical organ, although tubular damage foll…

Current concepts in occupational health: metals-chromium.

Chromium and its compounds have long been generally recognized as having potentially severe occupational health hazards. A brief review of the historical perspectives is provided. Failure to properly differentiate between the various valence states, which exhibit different toxicological properties and the physical state (solubility, particle size, etc.) as well as poor quantitation and characterization of exposure has led to confusion and potential error in estimating the risk inherent in working with chromium and its compounds. An overview is provided of the most recent and available data whi…

Radio-gas chromatography of chromium (III) hexafluoroacetylacetonate.

A method has been developed for the determination of trace levels of chromium by radio-gas chromatography. The technique involves conversion of radioactive 51Cr to a metal chelate compound, using C2H5I131 as an internal standard, and detection of radioactivity of 51Cr in the chelate by a flow system surrounding a Nal(TI) scintillation detector. The detection limit is found to be as low as 10(-12) g. From the observed radio-chromatogram it can be shown that the method is selective and free from interference.

Study on application of biological iron sulfide composites in treating vanadium-extraction wastewater containing chromium (VI) and chromium reclamation.

In this study, the Cr(VI)-resistant properties and regeneration characteristics of biological iron sulfide composites were investigated, which consist of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and its in situ synthesized nanosized iron sulfides. Then the application of the composites in treating vanadium-extraction wastewater containing high concentration Cr(VI) and reclaiming Cr were performed. It was found that SRB in composites still survived after being used to treat vanadium-extraction wastewater, which could reduce reaction products Fe3+ and sulphur into Fe2+ and S2 by using them as the electro

Removal and recycling of hexavalent chromium from alkaline wastewater via a new ferrite process to produce the valuable chromium ferrite.

Current technologies for removal of Cr(VI) are generally fit for acidic wastewater. In this study, a new ferrite process for removal and recycling of Cr(VI) from alkaline wastewater to produce the valuable chromium ferrite has been developed. The results show that this new ferrite method is a one-step process which can be divided into two successive reactions including Cr(VI) reduction to form coprecipitation (Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3) and subsequently magnetic conversion of Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3 induced by Fe2+ under the same alkaline condition. The total Fe/Cr mole ratio of 5:1 is at least required for…

Use of synchrotron- and plasma-based spectroscopic techniques to determine the uptake and biotransformation of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) by Parkinsonia aculeata.

In this study, a combination of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to study the uptake and speciation of chromium in Parkinsonia aculeata, commonly known as Mexican Palo Verde. Plants were treated for 14 days in a modified Hoagland solution containing chromium(III) or chromium(VI) at several concentrations. The results showed that plants treated with 70 mg Cr(III) L(-1) and 30 mg Cr(VI) L(-1) had similar Cr concentrations in leaves (∼200 mg kg(-1) dry weight, DW). The results also showed that neither Cr(III) nor Cr(VI) affe…

Separation of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) by ion chromatography and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer as element-selective detector.

Due to its extensive use in industrial processes, large quantities of chromium compounds are discharged into the environment. Common approaches for the speciation of Cr employ the determination of Cr(VI) and total Cr. The focus of the present work was a separation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species, with a minimum of sample preparation, by keeping an eye on the more relevant and toxic Cr(VI). For the successful simultaneous separation of both chromium species we implemented a RSpak NN-814 4DP (PEEK, 4 mm x 150 mm) multi-mode column using an eluent containing 90 mM ammonium sulfate and 10 mM ammoniu…

Effects of taurine on oxidative stress parameters and chromium levels altered by acute hexavalent chromium exposure in mice kidney tissue.

The kidney has been regarded as a critical organ of toxicity induced by acute exposure to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] compounds. Reactive intermediates and free radicals generated during reduction process might be responsible for Cr(VI) toxicity. In this study, the effects of pretreatment or posttreatment of taurine on Cr(VI)-induced oxidative stress and chromium accumulation in kidney tissue of Swiss albino mice were investigated. Single intraperitoneal (ip) potassium dichromate treatment (20 mgCr/kg), as Cr(VI) compound, significantly elevated the level of lipid peroxidation as compared wit…
