They are chiefly localized in the tonsil, tongue and lip, regardless of the primary site of the neoplasm. The aim was to evaluate the visual acuity after transcleral resection of ciliary body melanoma. 42 patients were treated by trans-scleral resection of melanoma between January 1995 and June 2001. Additional rutenium brachytherapy was performed in 29 cases. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation was necessary in 7 cases. Postoperative filtration bleb appeared in 6 eyes. PURPOSE: To describe clinical and pathologic features of an iridociliary lacrimal gland choristoma in which the diagnosis was made clinically and confirmed histopathologically.
METHODS: Case report with clinical, ultrasound biomicroscopic, and histopathologic observations.
RESULTS: We examined a 12-month-old male for a large iris mass that had been present since birth. We suspected it to be a lacrimal gland choristoma based on characteristic clinical features. The lesion was removed by iridocyclectomy, and the diagnosis of lacrimal gland choristoma was confirmed.

Experimental autoimmune anterior uveitis (EAAU) is an animal model for acute anterior uveitis in humans. Previously, we have shown that EAAU can be induced in Lewis rats by a protein(s) associated with ocular melanin. The present study was designed to further purify the pathogenic antigen. We report the case histories of three patients with untreated malignant melanoma of the choroid or ciliary body. Metastatic disease which resulted in death was diagnosed four years in two patients and 13 years in one patient after the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma was suspected. The diagnosis of malignant melanoma was confirmed by histopathology in two of these patients.

A case history is presented which illustrates the occurrence of ciliary-body cysts in association with multiple myeloma. Gross pathologic, light-microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunofluorescent characteristics of the cysts are presented, and the observed morphology used to postulate their pathogenesis.

Thirty-four patients with medium (2) or large (32) uveal melanomas which involved the ciliary body (ciliary-choroidal, ciliary, and iris-ciliary) were treated with helium ion (29) or I-125 brachytherapy (5). Thirty-one of 34 eyes were retained after treatment. Most melanomas were too large for surgical removal with retention of the eye. Eyes containing very large tumours often had poor visual acuity after treatment.

Biochemical studies of acidic lens protein degrading activity in the bovine ciliary body were performed. The activity showed two peaks, Fractions A and B, on Sephadex G-75 column chromatography. Fraction A contained cathepsin D and thiol proteinase activities and was inhibited by pepstatin and leupeptin. Fraction B contained thiol proteinase activity and was inhibited by leupeptin.
