The late diagnosis of severe alcoholism--often after the onset of somatic complaints and the appearance of psychic disorders needs extensive research able to identify new objective clinical and paraclinical markers to allow early and accurate identification of alcoholism also after various periods of abstinence. We describe convenient and relatively rapid procedures for purifying creatine kinase isoenzymes MM, BB, and MB, and their use in an improved radioimmunoassay for creatine kinase isoenzymes in plasma. The modifications include use of: (a) BB with a specific activity of 400 kU/g, which can be labeled with a specific radioactivity of 20 Ci/g; (b) albumin-free purified MB as inhibitor; (c) antiserum to MB creatine kinase; and (d) a second-antibody technique that necessitates only a 15-min incubation. In recent years, many cases of beriberi have been reported throughout Japan. One may assume that a great many healthy subjects suffer from a subclinical thiamine deficiency. The present study was carried out in order to examine thiamine status in 21 beriberi patients and 674 apparently normal subjects. Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT, EC. 2.3.2.2. was measured in 173 patients with diseases of the hepatobiliary system (including metastatic cancer) and in 90 patients who were subsequently shown to have primary diseases of other etiology. Atypical manifestations of early syphilis, although uncommon, may represent diagnostic difficulties and delay therapy. We describe two cases of hepatitis complicating early syphilis. In a group of 26 child patients with coeliac sprue verified by clinical tests and biopsy, we observed a significant change in the proportion of the intestinal alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme in the serum in correlation to a gluten-free therapeutic diet. In untreated patients, in the active phase of the disease, intestinal AP isoenzyme activity rises in the serum and falls in the intestinal mucosa. In our experience, the change in activity is reversible within 3--5 days of instituting adequate treatment, i.e. a gluten-free diet. Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activity was measured in 10 German Landrace pigs from 11 to 28 weeks of age. A pronounced age dependence of serum enzyme activity was observed, peak activity occurring at 19 weeks of age.
