Possible correlations between allergic reactions and the significance of a dental prosthesis or restoration made from one or more of the metals nickel, cobalt and chromium are considered. Described clinical cases are reviewed. These allergic reactions may appear either locally as stomatitis or distantly in the form of general or local contact dermatitis.

853 hard metal workers were examined and patch tested with 20 substances from their environment, including nickel and cobalt. Nickel sensitivity was found in 2 men and 38 women. 88% of the nickel-sensitive individuals had developed a jewelry dermatitis prior to employment in the hard metal industry or before the appearance of hand eczema. 29% of the hard metal workers gave a history of slight irritant dermatitis. BACKGROUND: Modular necks in total hip replacement (THR) can be a source of metal ion release.
METHODS: We measured the level of cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) ions in the serum of 23 healthy volunteers with a well-functioning ceramic-on-ceramic THR of a particular design, containing a cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) stem and a Co-Cr modular neck.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)'s Copperbelt is the world's leading source of cobalt, a metal essential to the energy transition. In this region, uranium co-occurs with oxidized cobalt ores. Despite no officially reported uranium production, we show that uranium is extracted, concentrated, and exported via the DRC cobalt supply chain. We theoretically study strain effects on the electronic properties of cobalt-based benzenehexathiol (CoBHT) coordination nanosheets using first-principles calculations. Two distinct crystal structures, high-density structure (HDS) and low-density structure (LDS), are explored. The catalytic α-alkylation of nitriles has been accomplished with excellent yields and selectivity using bis(imino)pyridine pincer complexes of the inexpensive base metal Co. In particular, the (iPr2NNN)CoCl2 (0.5 mol %) catalyzed α-alkylation of benzyl nitrile with benzyl alcohol resulted in a maximum of 99% yield of the α-alkylated nitrile with exclusive selectivity after 4 h of reaction in air at 140 °C in the presence of 30 mol % KOtBu.
